Aboriginal Peoples of Canada are descendants of the nations Indigenous groups, who were considered to be the original inhabitants of North America. In Canada they are comprised of three main groups known as First Nations, Inuit and Metis they are incredibly diverse with respect to cultural practices, languages and spiritual beliefs. Evidence however indicates that, as a population, Aboriginal Peoples are “the most materially, socially and spatially deprived ethno-cultural group in Canada.” Further, Aboriginal women are considered to be among the most severely disadvantaged of all groups in Canadian society. In a study conducted by the University of British Colombia they examined Aboriginal women’s experiences with health care services from 1995 to 2000. A large number of Aboriginal women had negative experiences with the health care system. The stories were primarily based on the racist and discriminatory treatment they received from the nurse that was treating them. One participant said that she had severe pneumonia, and that she was “really sick…and that they discharged [her], she wasn’t even better yet” the nurse then told her that “you need to get your stuff and you need to go don’t let me call security”. The women felt that they were discriminated against for being “Aboriginal, appearing poor, for substance use”. The experience faced by this group of women is unacceptable health care providers are suppose to treat all people equitably, and should not give a lower level of treatment based on an individuals race or social status. This is crucial to crime statistics because if Aboriginals were reporting during this time period they may never gain justice. This may be another factor that caused the Missing and Murdered Aboriginals women case to last for so long because no one was looking for them. According to the police data of missing women during this time only 12 of 46 women were on the database. Police practices, however are engrained with certain biases for example racial profiling is where police suspect someone of committing a crime based on their race. Police for example stereotype Aboriginal women because some may abuse substances and work as sex workers, police attribute negative characteristics to the whole population. This over policing may cause Aboriginal women to show up more often in crime statistics because police are focusing on them making them seem more unlawful. In a one-day snapshot of a women’s prison Aboriginal women accounted for 23 percent of the female inmate prison and 73 percent of women held in provincial custody.
