Abraham Lincoln was a well-known man, especially because of his actions against slavery. Abe was born on February 12, 1809 to Thomas and Nancy, near Hodgenville, Kentucky. Abraham had one older sister Sarah, and when Abe was three, Nancy & Thomas had a baby boy named Thomas who lived only two days. Abe’s mother died of Illness in Indiana when he was eight. Soon after, Abraham’s father then married Sarah Bush Johnston, a widow. Abe’s sister Sarah died at the age of twenty when giving birth to her first child, a stillborn boy.
On November 4th, 1842, Abraham Lincoln married Mary Todd, without her family’s approval. Abraham and mary had three children, Edward, William, and Thomas (Tad). Edward died at the age of 3, before they had William. …show more content…

He once said in a speech, "Government cannot endure permanently half slave, half free...". He was elected president of the U.S. in 1860 on November 6th, and was the first Republican president in history.
On February 9, 1861, the confederate states of america was formed, with Jefferson Davis as president. On April 12, in that same year, the civil war began when confederates fired 50 cannons on Fort Sumpter in Charleston, South Carolina. On April 15, Lincoln issued a proclamation calling 75,000 militiamen. On July 1-3, 1863, Union won the battle of Gettysburg, in Pennsylvania. On November 19, Lincoln his two minute speech called the Gettysburg Address, and dedicated the battlefield as a national cemetery.
In 1864, Abraham was re-elected president, with 55% of the popular vote and 212 of the 233 electoral votes. On January 31, the following year, the U.S. Congress approved the Thirteenth Amendment, to abolish slavery.
On April 9, 1865 General Robert E. Lee surrendered his Confederate Army, proving the Union as a victor, and celebrations broke out.
On April 14, Abraham and Mary saw the play “Our American Cousin” at Ford's Theater, in Washington DC. At 10:13 PM, John Wilkes Booth, an actor in the play, shot Abe Lincoln in the head.
