Abraham Lincoln was born near Hodgenville Kentucky on February 12, 1809, but seven years later his father had the family move to Indiana, where his father was a farmer. Due to his bad eyesight, Thomas Lincoln would make his son do the majority of the work. When he could, Abraham Lincoln would spend his free time reading books far into the night. Lincoln did not have much education due to being a poor farmer, but was very intellectual and known for his honesty. Douglas won Senate, but the debates gave Lincoln a national good reputation. On February 27, 1860, just two years after the most famous debates of America, Lincoln was invited to a New York audience by some New York leaders. There Lincoln reiterated his points that he had spoken on in the Debates and, although the assembly thought him somewhat unattractive and awkward, Lincoln won the hearts of the New Yorkers that a journalist reported, “No man ever before made such an impression on his first appeal to a New York audience”(Wikipedia). Abraham made a second flatboat trip to New Orleans, and in 1831 he left home for New Salem, in Sangamon County near Springfield. The separation may have been made easier by Lincoln's estrangement from his father, of whom he spoke little in his mature life. In New Salem, Lincoln tried various occupations and served briefly in the Black Hawk War (1832). This military interlude was uneventful except for the fact that he was elected captain of his volunteer company, a distinction that gave him "much satisfaction." It opened new avenues for his life.

It was at this point that Abe decided he was man enough at 22 years of age to live on his own. Abe now needed to work and make a living for himself, so he went into a laborious job. He became a lumber jack swinging an ax, cutting down trees for fencing, firewood and various other things. As time moved forward Lincoln moved to another destination to call his home. The family was forced to move to Perry County, Indiana in 1816 over a land dispute. When Lincoln was 9 years old, his mother died of tremetol (a milk sickness) at the age of 34. His formal schooling was limited to three brief periods in school for about eighteen months. There was little reading material in the wilderness, so Lincoln would sometimes walk for miles to borrow a book. In 1830, he moved to Macon County, Illinois where he worked on a riverboat hauling freight down the Mississippi River to New Orleans. He then settled down in Salem, Illinois where he worked as a postmaster and a shopkeeper.
