In days past artists made art that was representational. Meaning, they did their absolute best to create art that closely resembled what was seen in the real world. They put as much time and effort into their work as they could; creating masterpieces that are now on display in museums across the world. In modern times, artists have turned away from the traditional way of making art, and are now creating art that is not constrained by the guidelines of representational art. This style of art is called abstract art. Abstract art is used to illustrate the how the artist might feel or to express a certain message the artist wants to communicate. In this turning away from traditional art, an artist no longer needs the skill, time, or effort to communicate with the viewer. Abstract artists only have to write out what they want their art to say on a piece of paper instead of using the craftsmanship required to simultaneously create a beautiful piece of artwork and communicate their meaning behind the artwork. If abstract artists are only concerned with expressing themselves and not the actual art, is it legitimate art? The answer to this question would put in perspective what art is truly about. The aesthetics or the meaning? Abstract Art contains no form of legitimate craftsmanship. Since the times of Rembrandt and before, art has been used to add beauty and provide delight for the eye of the viewer. In abstract art, however, this is not the case. The aesthetics of abstract art
Abstraction is the creation of art without representation of objects, in which the artist has total freedom of the art that they are creating. I will be using three paintings from three different time periods in order to show the development and lasting effects of abstraction in the twentieth century. The first work that I will be looking at is Foghorns by Arthur Dove. I will use this piece to show the beginning of abstraction, and how ideas of abstraction were present before the movement began. The second painting that I will be looking at is Jackson Pollock’s Lucifer. I will be using this painting as an example of the height of abstraction in the 20th century and will be discussing Pollock’s influence on abstraction. The third piece of art I will be looking at is Many Mansion by Kerry James Marshall. I will use this work to show the remnants of Pollock’s influence, and the influence of abstraction in general, on art in the later half of the century. For the development of this paper I looked at two of the course readings. The first reading that I used was The Tradition of the New by Harold Rosenberg. I used this article to show how Foghorns by Arthur Dove relates to abstraction, and to show how ideas in creation of this painting can be linked to ideas of abstract art. The second reading that I used for this paper was The Legacy of Jackson Pollock by Alan Kaprow. I used this article to gain information about
Abstract Expressionism began in the 1940s and the 1950s in New York after World War II from the ideas of Surrealism about art that looks to examining the unconscious mind, and the feelings people hold that makes us all humans. Through the discussion of Autumn Rhythm (Number 30) by Jackson Pollock, I will define Abstract Expression and why this work is part of this movement. Then, through the discussion of Canyon by Robert Rauschenberg, Target with Plaster Casts by Jasper Johns, and Marilyn Diptych by Andy Warhol, I will explain Assemblage and Pop Art and why each of these works belong to those movements.
Art has evolved and regenerated itself many times during our human existence. These differences are defined through changes in styles under various theories. During the nineteenth and early twentieth century, a style known as Expressionism became popular. During this movement the artists were trying to use their artwork as a tool of expression toward life. It was mainly dominant in the nonrepresentational arts, such as abstract visual arts and music. It also was probably one of the most difficult movements to understand because the whole point of the piece lay within the artist. Not only was it a movement, it defined the act of art as a whole. From the beginning of time, each work of art, excluding replicas, show a way of expressing
Often times misunderstood and, at times, even complex to understand, Abstract is a category of artwork that challenges the viewer’s intellect through its array of bold color schemes, extracted ideas, and conceptual viewpoints. Expressionism is a sub-category of Abstract artwork, which encapsulates the philosophical, intellectual, and emotional stimulation it hopes to create in the observer, which frequently, is the objective of the artist who created the conceptual piece. Three artists who embody the abstract principles are Joan Mitchell, who was one of the first women expressionist painters who focused on landscape-type portraits, and a successive artist to similar abstract painters such as Mark Tobey, and also preceded by modern sculptor Lynda Benglis who literally “cements” abstract painting concepts into unique dimensional sculptures. Yet, Mitchell’s artwork is “special” to me
The movie industry is for entertainment purposes. For many people, going to the movies is an escape; time to sit back and become someone else. However, once in a rare moment then a movie comes out that is not just foe entertainment and dares to address a controversial issue. “The Blind Side” and “Precious” are two movies that I was very surprised at my reaction to them. My reasons for wanting to see both movies were as different as night and day. I went to see the “Blind Side” because it is based on a true story and Sandra Bullock is the leading lady. Yet, “Precious” doesn’t have a famous leading lady, but the previews were so intense and so realistic that it pulled me in. “The Blind Side” and “Precious” are
Abstract Expressionism is considered a triumph in American Painting. It is still the most discussed and debated form of twentieth century American art, and still influences generations of artists. It used the cultural references of the tragic, the unconscious, the sublime and the primitive to create a unique and evocative style of painting that was unique in the art world.
Abstract Expressionism was born in 1940’s New York when small group of loosely affiliated artists begin to create a body of work which varied in style, technique, and quality of expression. This stylistically diverse collection introduced radical new directions in art and completely shifted the art world’s focus. Although the works vary greatly, they do share several broad characteristics including the fact that they are based off non-representational forms, they emphasize spontaneous personal emotional expression, and they are all explorations into utilizing the physical characteristics of paint to evoke expressive qualities. Although female artists were among the group who pioneered the new artistic movement, they were left out of the narrative.
"Art should comfort the disturbed and disturb the comfortable." is a popular quote adapted by the street artist known as Bansky to specifically talk about art. It is especially true of abstract art, which oftentimes depicts events that can be uncomfortable to discuss or is confusing. If something is abstract, then it is something that is not clearly defined, or not typically thought of as normal or realistic, and it can be difficult to understand.
In the poem One Art, the speaker reflects over the many material things that she has lost in the past, like her mother’s watch, and even bigger things like houses. By the end of the poem she ends up confronting and reflecting over the loss of her loved one, which in turn shows a more intense side of loss for her and how she as a person deals with it. Elizabeth Bishop uses repetition, and her own interjections to help convey her belief that loss is an everyday part of life, but it is how you deal with it that changes the situation. Bishop uses her repetition to describe an aspect of loss, and how it changes and affects people over time.
I chose the Michel Saloff-Coste abstract art for my piece. The artwork made me think of a busy market type street thronging with people of all different backgrounds. My piece is meant to convey a person getting up in the morning and walking down a bright street like this where there is lots of music from different places, all mixing together. I imagine it sort of like an open-air market in a big city, with everyone playing their own music. I opened with two different brass track solos. I felt that the bright, almost celebratory feel very much illustrated the ‘person’ of my piece heading out ready to face the day. After this it goes into a conga beat with a string bass playing a repeated eighth-note pattern. This establishes the ‘groove’ of
“The Madonna and Child with Saint Anne and an Angel” is an art piece with many different art principles and elements that are conveyed in such a manor that alludes complexity and great importance. The picture consists of four individuals- an angel, a baby, a Madonna or mother, and Saint Anne. The baby, cradled and asleep, is being overlooked by an angel, as the angel seems to be covering the child with a white blanket and much great care. Contrary to modern pictures, the angel has black wings wearing normal clothes similar to that of the mother and Saint. An important characteristic of the baby is that he has bright blonde and orange hair, a trait that resembles Jesus Christ. The mother and Saint Anne seem to be having a very important face-to-face discussion. All characters in the painting, including the child, are wearing late 15th century early 16th century clothing (rags and clothe looking material dresses) and recognizable colors.
Abstract art has always been difficult for me to understand or even appreciate. I admire accurate interpretations of art as well as the skills and rules that have been taught for centuries. For as long as I can remember, modern art and its meaning was like another language for me. It was difficult to look at, everything was new, and it just made my head spin. At first I ignored it for another day until eventually I found myself trying to avoid it.
In the world of art, abstract art is the most intriguing from a personal standpoint. I believe that abstract art is usually defined with lines, shapes, curves, and even layers and opacity. It is art that defies to represent the external reality in which we view on the daily. However, with abstraction, it seeks to achieve its effects using simple shapes, forms, colors, and textures. There are various forms of abstraction that were created and caused an art movement to change the view of art. Most were used to realistic artwork prior to abstract art. Many movements has caused and created the modern art and appreciation for the modern-day art. Stanton MacDonald-Wright is a well-known modern artist. His stable in artistry was Synchromism which was an early form of abstraction. The art was a color-based form of painting which received international attention and created the primary American avant-garde art movement. His artwork created a voice and movement for the modern day.
Abstract Expressionism is making its comeback within the art world. Coined as an artist movement in the 1940’s and 1950’s, at the New York School, American Abstract Expressionist began to express many ideas relevant to humanity and the world around human civilization. However, the subject matters, contributing to artists, were not meant to represent the ever-changing world around them. Rather, how the world around them affected the artist themselves. The works swayed by such worldly influences, become an important article within the artists’ pieces. Subjectively, looking inward to express the artist psyche, artists within the Abstract Expressionism movement became a part of their paintings. Making the paintings more of a representation
Abstract art is defined as art that does not attempt to represent external reality, but seeks to achieve its effect using shapes, forms, colors, and textures.
