What makes a character ‘bad’ and criminal? A criminal is a person who is a wrongdoer in which the outcome benefits solely for himself. A ‘bad’ character is a person who is unwelcoming and unpleasant. Knowing this, Abul Khaizuran from ‘Men in the Sun’ by Ghassan Kanafani, does not identify with such characteristics. Keeping in mind that the novella’s setting is taken place a few years after the all-out attack on Palestine and they are going from Basra to Kuwait and during the corrupted society of Palestinians, Abul Khaizuran puts his life on the line to help Abu Qais, Assad and Marwan by smuggling them into Kuwait. Instead of focusing and worrying about himself, he selflessly decided to help them. Throughout the novella, Abul Khaizuran develops …show more content…
A fitting reference to this would be the whole concept of smuggling Abu Qais, Assad and Marwan into Kuwait. Abul Khaizuran violated the laws of Kuwait which can be seen as a criminal act, albeit the support is flimsy because Abul Khaizuran was breaking the laws to help Abu Qais, Assad and the people that relied on them for support. Also in a broader outlook, the men had all received punishment for breaking the laws since Abu Qais, Assad and Marwan lost their lives and Abul Khaizuran now must live with a hefty baggage of guilt strapped on his shoulders for the rest of his life. Another reference that Abul Khaizuran can be interpreted as bad or criminal would be on page seventy-three, last paragraph when Abul Khaizuran returns to where he left the bodies of Abu Qais, Assad and Marwan on the ground, unburied and took their money. Seeing that Abul Khaizuran stole their money is considered stealing which is a crime and how he didn’t bury their bodies are all terrible traits that constitute an ideal bad character. Although this may be true, this argument is weak because their money would have been stolen either way, Abul Khaizuran did fulfill his end of the deal of bringing them to Kuwait and in this case, his fatigue had overcome his inclination to burying them in a respectable manner. Again, there were incidents that could portray Abul Khaizuran as an immoral character but at the same time, the reasoning behind them is futile since there are other possibilities and explanations as to why he had done them that contradicted the reasons that shed criminal light on Abul
How can you tell if a “bad guy”--the villain, the monster, the thief--is necessarily a bad guy? Is it by the images they choose to ink on their skin? Their crooked smile, or maybe perhaps the way they like to crack their knuckles? Maybe it’s just their attire: it’s too dark, too scary. And what of their eyes? There’s something there...something about the way they’re placed, something about how they flicker and gleam with every mention of what they desire. But what of their feelings? The ever-circling wheels of emotions from deep inside that manage to control the raging tides of life? Do they not care like we do?
The actions of ordinary people can be just as evil or wicked as the horrible crimes of a murderer. Sometimes what we see on the outside is completely different from what is really on the inside. No one is perfect, everyone has their faults and some faults are unimaginable.
Will-power and determination plays a major role when it comes to people accomplishing goals and performing the tasks they are given. When a person possesses these two qualities they are motivated, focused, will not give up easily, determined along with many other things. The word determination is defined as, “the act of coming to a decision or of fixing or settling a purpose.” Will-power is, “the strength or will to carry out one’s decisions, wishes, or plans.” In the short story A Worn Path by Eudora Welty, the main character Phoenix carried out the meaning of these two words throughout the whole story. She had experienced many road blocks during her journey, but she did not let them stop her from reaching
I was pleased to have attended a lecture cosponsored by the Ethics Center, the Fresno State office of the president, the Fresno Bee and Valley PBS. The lecture began with Dr. Castro recognizing a few leaders on campus, including a past Fresno State president, Dr. John D. Welty and campus volunteer Mary Castro. Dr. Castro then mentioned a few things about Mr. Brooks stating that he is a columnist for the New York Times and an analyst for the PBS “News Hour” and NPR’s “All Things Considered.” Dr. Brooks also teaches at Yale University, one the finest university in the country. Dr. Castro continued by saying that he learned that Mr. Brooks office hours are from 9am to 1pm and how “cool” it sounded to him. I was surprised how many people attended the event. I was fortunate to find a seat. David Brooks mentioned how he has some remote roots in the Central Valley because his father grew in Chowchilla, CA but Mr. Brooks grew in New York.
In the memoir “A Long Way Gone” by Ishmael Beah, there are several examples of people who show they are capable of evil, because everyone is.
If had to choose a Character from the book Schooled By Gordon Korman to be my best friend it would have to Capricorn Anderson.I would pick Capricorn Anderson (known as Cap) because he is very nice and he is not like the usual boys at the school mean, jockey, and reckless.Capricorn is nice, friendly, and generous.Just like when Capricorn found a dead bird in his locker and in the middle of school he host a ceremony for the dead bird that some kids at his school put in his locker. Also Cap really loves his family and the foster home he had to go live in.Sophie is the daughter of the foster mom and her dad left her when she was a little girl.Every year she waits for him to show up at her door on her birthday.Well this year Cap was living there when
In Farewell to Manzanar, Mama Wakatsuki is a character with an unhealthy mindset of a temperamental person and a pessimistic attitude. She displays her temperamental behavior while taking out on someone else. "Mama started to quiver. Her eyes blazed up at him… She just glared at this man, all the rage and frustration channeled at him through her eyes. (Wakatsuki Houston 14)” Mama was very frustrated because a secondhand dealer had come to her house to buy items before the Japanese-Americans were sent to the camps, and he had offered fifteen dollars to buy a China set that was worth at least two hundred dollars. Her blazing eyes and quivering as if she was about to blow up reveals that she is temperamental. Therefore, she will lose her temper
"...What impact did your father not being there have on your childhood?"(The "Other" Wes Moore -Part I: Fathers and Angels - pg. 4) This question is what connected me to the novel. The "author" Wes began the story of his and the "other " Wes's memories of their fathers. This explains how and why they grew up fatherless. Wes " the author" recalls only have two memories of his father one was when his father had a talk with him after he punched his sister Nikki and the other one was the day his father passed away. The "author" Wes father didn't choose to leave, unlike the "other Wes's father, which he never met until years later. I related to this chapter a lot, I too was raised by a single mother but my story is just a tad different. My family
Farah Ahmedi wanted a life free of war. Aengus was desperate to find his true love and Walt Masters was motivated to save a man's claim. Whether if it was one's determination to find love or determination to save one from danger, Farah, Aengus, and Walt all worked hard to succeed at their own goals.
When we look at Falnnery O’Connors “A Good Man is Hard to Find” we see many forms of evil even before we meet the criminals. The family has a trip planned to Florida which the grandmother does not approve of because she would rather visit Tennessee. The grandmother then tries to per sway the family by instilling fear bringing up “The Misfits” who were local criminals that just escaped from prison; although her actions may seem rather insignificant and perhaps even debatable if they are evil, the grandmother’s actions can still be perceived as selfish. The grandmother’s selfish motives can be viewed as a form evil even if it is not the worst evil. This begs the question where precisely does the line lay on what is done through purely evil motives and if the line is really as clear cut as we may possibly think it is?
Rivalry can be playful and good natured, but it isn’t always this way. Rivalry and competition can help individuals grow as a person, and help them to develop into mature adults. Competition can be a motivator to do better. It can also lead to vast destruction, and severed friendships. Rivalry in this case is unhealthy, the overall outcome of the story proves this. Finny and Gene didn’t really have a ‘healthy’ rivalry or competition. Their relationship wasn’t healthy, and it eventually leads to the death of Finny. In “A Separate Piece” by John Knowles the rivalry between two friends turns unhealthy very quickly. The competition and rivalry between the two friends is destructive, it destroys their friendship,
You are sitting in your living room at home watching the nightly news. The lead story for the night is about a family of four that were murdered. After seeing and hearing about something like that we often ask ourselves, What could possess a person enough to kill another human being? What is it that drives a person to kill? Will we ever know? Many authors use this unique mentality in short stories. They write about what the killer thinks and how he/she acts on his/her thoughts. One of these stories is "A Good Man Is Hard To Find", by Flannery O'Connor. In this story O'Connor's victim, The Misfit, is an escaped convict. He was in the Federal Penitentiary for killing his father. Throughout the story O'Connor builds up this killers
“I Know This Much is True” by Wally Lamb is a deep book about twin brothers who grow up together but are much different in their personality. Dominick takes the role of the more dominate or “manly” brother who loves to get dirty and horse around. Thomas on the other hand likes to play pretend with his mom and is always taking the safe way through everything. As the story progresses Dominick becomes a caretaker of Thomas from when they both go off to college. Thomas starts being paranoid all the time and is not able to work. He thinks people are out to get him because he says he is the messenger of god. Thomas then gets diagnosed with schizophrenia, a brain disorder that can lead you to see or hear things that aren’t actually there.
What makes a person good or evil? Why are some people labeled as good and some evil? Why do some people have traits or characteristics of both good and evil? Are people truly evil or do they just make bad choices? Throughout our lives we are faced with making decisions about our lives and often the choices we make can determine the path we follow. Depending on our life choices we can be labeled as either good or evil. Good and evil are relative; one person can be good while another evil. Some people can possess a combination of both good and bad traits. But even those who are considered bad can be rehabilitated to display good qualities such as empathy or kindness.
There are always two sides to every coin. For example, without evil, there can be no good. Is being a good person all about the things one does or is it about the reason one does the things they do? There 's good and bad in everyone. Humanity isn 't perfect, and our lives are so complex. In the film titled Nightcrawler, Louis Bloom shows viewers first-hand what it is like to be a journalist in the fast pace city of Los Angeles. Throughout the film, Louis attempts to manipulate the other characters and uses their weakness against them to get whatever he desires. Even though a person may be considered as a bad person they still could possibly commit actions that a good person normally world and vice-versa. For many people, it may be easy for them to characterize Louis as a bad person, due to the choices and decisions he makes through the movie. After watching the film several times, I am still pondering over what exactly it means to be a bad or good person. Everyone makes mistakes; it is inevitable. But the thing that separates a good person from a bad person is that a good person learns from those mistakes and never repeats those same mistakes again. Making mistakes is part of what makes us human. They not only help one learn from our experiences, but they also help shape one into the individual they would like to become. A good person is comfortable with both their strengths and weaknesses, treat others with respect, and are aware that their inner intentions are truly what
