Canada is a nation of opportunity and freedom, known to the world for being kind, polite, and accepting. However, Canada does have a dark history with the Indigenous population, where we have shown undeniable amounts of discrimination towards them, a past full of neglect, hate, abuse and humiliation. Even the Prime Minister of Canada Justin Trudeau declared that “Canada is no land of wonders” (Jazeera, 2017). To this day Canadian society is still oppressing the Indigenous population as they face higher levels of poverty than any other population in Canada.
Inequalities and prejudices occur every day towards the Indigenous population within the Canadian society, keeping them trapped in a cycle of poverty. Canada still has a long road ahead to heal and make all the necessary amends with the Indigenous population. Canada has a long past with the Indigenous people, that is damaged because of our shameful actions in the 1800’s. The Canadian government established Residential schools to assimilate Indigenous people into mainstream Canadian society, wanting “to kill the Indian in the child ” (Brief History). Forbidding them to speak their native language or practice their cultures or beliefs (Laing, 2013). With over 130 residential schools children with no choice were taken from their homes, and families were divided and separated over long periods of times and distances. (Brief History).
