The End of Love and Acceptance of Loss in “Eveline” by James Joyce and “Hills Like White Elephants” by Ernest Hemingway
At least once in a lifetime, most people will experience the end of a love and have to deal with the difficulties of moving on. The end of a romance can occur either through choosing to leave your other half or being the one who is left. Eveline knew that if she went to Buenos Aires with Frank she would have a better life, but she also knew that she did not love Frank, although “she had begun to like him” (Joyce 659). When she left Frank at the docks it was the end of a love. It was not the end of her love for him, but of his belief that Eveline loved him. “Her chief concern is herself; she resolves to elope mainly to avoid reliving her mother's futile life”(Dilworth 456). However, what Eveline truly desires isn't Frank but freedom for herself. “All the seas of the world tumbled about her heart. He was drawing her into them: he would drown her”, if she goes with Frank she will be free from her father but she is still worried that she will end up trapped in a loveless marriage just like her mother(Joyce 661). “After all, her mother's marriage to her father must subconsciously condition her anticipation of married life”(Dilworth 456). At the end of the story it is clear that Frank does love Eveline, but as soon as she made the choice to stay with her father their love ended. For Eveline it is easy to accept the loss of marriage with Frank but the loss of the chance at a new life is harder. There appears to be a rift between the two characters that only they know about. I question their tolerance for one another and their ability to stay together as they seem to be a committed couple. As in true Hemmingway style we only only know of the character by what they

Conflict is created through dialogue as these characters face what most readers believe to be the obstacle of an unexpected pregnancy. Their plight is further complicated by their inability to convey their differing opinions to each other. Symbolism and the title's meaning are other effective means of communicating conflict.
It is obvious in the text that Frank has very deep feelings for Eveline, but could she accept that this man actually loves her? He took time out to do things with her to show her how he felt. "He took her to see The Bohemian Girl and she felt elated as she sat in an accustomed part of the theater." (Joyce 31) "He used to meet her outside of the Stores every evening and see her home." (Joyce 31) He treated her well, so why did she again repudiate his offer? She did not know how to accept this type of love that Frank had to offer. How could she ever measure up to what he deserved? Eveline never realized that love is unconditional and that she was being loved for who she was. How do we mend our broken relationships before we die? Why is this important for us to do before it is too late?
