Accountability in the Army Essay

Both responsibility and accountability differ from authority in the respect authority can be delegated, while both accountability and responsibility are universal and cannot be. First formation is especially important because your superiors can report to their First Sergeants and Sergeant Major how many soldiers are prepared to train and how many are tasked out. Accountability doesn 't just mean showing up on time. It means responsibility. It means that if you fail a small part of the mission (to be on time), you must be held liable for your failure. For example, you were supposed to depart for a mission outside the wire on a deployment. You are late to the convoy brief, the convoy brief must be given to you again, everyone is late to mount up, and the convoy misses its SP time. The Infantry unit waiting to link up with your convoy for additional protection might get ambushed because your convoy is late. This is all a result of the single event of a soldier not arriving on time.

The U.S. Army enforces accountability for many reasons; Inventories, Safety, and Work Procedures, and also just being able to keep track of military personnel's at all times. The Army follow a strict, firm, and structural policy or laws. The way accountability plays its role in the Army, it's like the back bone that holds everything together by keeping chaos or commotion at bay.

You have to consider for a moment the serious nature of this action. When we deploy, we rely on the person to our left and right. The profession of arms is one that requires all to do their part. Combat, by nature, is a physical, difficult, and demanding task. A person’s very life may depend on the actions of those around him or her. Ask any Soldier pulled from the vehicle hit by an improvised explosive device if that is true or not. You must have personnel on whom you can rely. When the fundamentals have been applied, you are now what makes up a Soldier. You are a Soldier that makes up a team, and on a larger scale, an organization. It’s important to understand that once the Oath of Enlistment is taken, and you have joined the United States Army, you must take your battles lives and the overall mission into play when making decisions. Your decisions can either effect your team in a positive way or a negative way depending on the actions you take. Disobeying orders can lead to corrective action. The importance of accountability is very important in the military. You always need to be accounted for when it’s time for formation, when you’re not where your supposed to be then your chain of command worries about their soldiers because they are given a task. In the military you have to be in the right place at the right time, in the right uniform. If you are given a task in the army you MUST perform it to the best of your ability and knowledge, or you will be counseled on your short comings accordingly. The formation is designed to get one hundred percent accountability of all personnel within the unit. There are many reasons why this is important. One reason it is important is to make sure every soldier is standing a breathing. Being a soldier in the United States Army is very stressful. Between our mission, our workload, and being away from family, it is sometimes very hard to handle.

Continue to do a good job and remember to always be in the right place at the right time and in the right uniform. In any situation you can’t make it to the formation on time, notify me so that I can better explain it to the Chain of Command. The best practice is to always be ten minutes prior to any formation in order to give you more leeway. Remember that if the flag goes off and you are not present, you may be counseled for being late/missing formation.

The key to all of teamwork, leading, and following is adhering to the instructions of those appointed over you which brings me to my next point. As soldiers we are drilled almost everyday to listen to commanders, NCO's and basically everyone higher in rank than us or in some cases people that have more time in service. We are taught discipline from day one in basic training when we hit the ground the first time doing pushups to the last right face in the last ceremony before we see our families. Discipline is crucial to following orders effectively, without it soldiers would not react fast enough to what is being said or would simply not care enough about the task at hand to perform it, weakening the team it

There are multiple reasons why soldiers should follow the orders they are given. An order is a task given to a soldier of something that needs to be done in a timely and efficient manner. The three main reasons why it is important for soldiers to follow orders are chaos, selfless-service, and being disciplined. When you’re in the army you need to stop and think if it will harm you or your battle buddies. When a soldier doesn’t follow orders while in combat zone it makes the mission ineffective, if a single soldier in the unit is combat ineffective it lowers the chances of winning, making the leaders deal with a soldier that can’t handle the workload of the unit.

Being on time shows accountability. Every military unit has to be held accountable for each individual soldier on duty. You never know if it’s going to be a ordinary training day, or if something happens that will require immediate response. Most often, if not from the normal schedule, we may have to be prepared

being at the right place at the right time is the first and often times the most fundamental action a Soldier will partake in, when performing his everyday as well as war time duties. A soldier cannot exceed in the United States army if he or she is constantly late and at the wrong place. A soldier who truly wants to succeed in the military must go out of his or her way to stay squared away on his or her place of duty. This concept goes for any person in any career. This is the most simple and most important aspect of being a soldier. If a soldier goes above and beyond in just about everything he or she does but is not on time and punctual than or she has failed at carrying out his or her orders.

                     The societies we live in use this phrase “be on-time” for many reasons. Every company, school, banks, and etc use it in their policies and their daily lives; from being on time for work, to completing an assignment on time. It helps display a foundation on how an individual preserves themselves, as well as for companies and organizations. It displays their professionalism to others. It provides security in objectives knowing that everything is going according to schedule. As such, this simple phrase “be on time” comes with many positives if followed correctly. There are many obvious reasons as to why being on time is important. Just by showing up on time it shows that you have the maturity, responsibility and professionalism. It shows that you’re a hard worker and that you’re ready to get the job done. As well, it makes you reliable to take on objectives when they are presented to you. Just “being on time” will just bring so many positive benefits, from getting the promotion or even just being noticed. In the Army

Being late on the other hand is taking time from others as well as disrespectful to your peers and NCO who sets the hit time. Being on time is something that everyone in the military was taught from day one in Basic Training and should be instilled inside the soldier from that day on. Just like everyone says “All you have to do is be in the right place at the right time in the right uniform.” Dependable soldiers show up at least 10 minutes prior to the hit time given by our NCO because in the real army that’s the standard and there’s no room for error. People not showing up on time are probably one of the reasons why we had several Saturday formations and early hit times to the PNC. Most of us are approaching one year in the military so showing up late in not acceptable at this
