Achieving Critical Thinking Ability

Before I started college, I had no idea what critical thinking was. Critical thinking is a method of thinking that emphasizes reflective, open minded, and rational analysis. I had never heard of such a thing before, but now I realize that it could be the key to success in anyone’s life. I have learned that we are a lot less than we can be, we have the capacity to be great, but our critical thinking is undeveloped.

Developing critical thinking and communication skills can be learned by doing many activities. Some not as fun as others, such as a research paper. In my History class at the beginning of the year, our professor broke the bad news of writing a research paper that would be due near the end of the semester. That small anxiety attack hits you, but quickly vanishes after you realize you have plenty of time. Then the time comes closer and the professor begins to urge you to begin selecting a topic for your paper. What I have learned when selecting a research topic is to choose something that is interesting to you or something you are passionate about. I used this when choosing my topic. Critical thinking is beneficial to individuals in most areas of life; however, to be effective one must work at the process regularly. You must apply logic, explore subjects, and educate yourself on the materials involved in the arguments. Remember it easy to be an effective critical thinker, we only need to put in a little work.

In the readings this week, we learned about the many aspects of being a critical thinker, as well as methods for developing critical thinking skills and critical problem solving. These are all important aspects of everyday life required to ensure even the simplest of tasks are done effectively and with the use of good judgment.

One of the primary challenges of becoming a critical thinker in a contemporary world is the actual speed of change and its complexity (Paul, Elder, Chartrand, Emery, Hall, Ishikawa, Maketa, & Gunther, 2012). Though technology is a great tool which helps in the process, it is also used by other individuals to subjectively filter information making it difficult to trust information that is received. Since we are a money-driven society, one must ask and question motive, making it difficult for humans to think critically because of the subjective opinions or emotions which interferes with the clarity of the process.

Employers require critical thinking skills of their employees. Regularly applying your own critical thinking skills helps you develop a growth mindset, create options, and understand how to handle complex situations effectively.

The more a person works on their critical thinking, the more they will gain from the lessons and world around them. Each person learns different ways and critical thinking will allow the person to put their own thoughts, experiences, and feelings into each lesson they encounter. If the thinker was not allowed to use their own thoughts, experiences, and feelings into each lesson, they would not be able to achieve the highest stage of critical thinking

Critical thinking is a more advanced level of reasoning and not relying solely on memory. Albert Einstein said, “Education is what’s left after you’ve forgotten all the facts.” First year college student said critical thinking means studying past the evident and find the deeper meaning. Communication is also a skill that students should have to be successful in college as well as the workforce. Effective communication is the glue that helps you deepen your connection to others and helps improve teamwork, decision making, and problem solving.

The human mind gradually develops over time into new and more complex stages, especially when people apply critical thinking in order to complete strenuous tasks. The ability to think at high-levels about interpretations, questions, or evidence, contributes to students building success with opportunities. The process of becoming a critical thinker does not happen over night, but those with self-efficacy are able to reach the highest ability of critical thinking. Many statistical studies have helped prove that supporting critical thinking in educational institutions has increased overall student success. Maximum strength of critical thinking is an achievement for all students in both academics and beyond their university.

According to the section, the current employers are claiming that lacking 'superior critical thinking and problem-solving skills' for the new graduates, probably because the dynamics of today's times demand in addition to the standard skills required to succeed in the running for a labor, the need for a new, broader set of skills and knowledge driven by innovation, allowing a flexibility to apply them both in work and personal life.

Critical thinking encompasses the ability to effectively process information in order to reach advanced conclusions with the possibility to act on them. It is an essential ability that enables one to be productive as a student or employee. Currently, I exercise my critical thinking skills on a frequent basis through utilizing information technology and serving as a leader of TeenTech SF GLOBAL.
