Do you know what to do if an active shooter situation presents itself? Do you know an active shooter does not always have to be carrying a gun? The Federal Bureau of Investigation website defines an active shooter as an individual actively engaged in killing or attempting to kill in a populated area. In an event of an active shooter, there are three things you should do; run, hide and fight. The first thing you should do is run to the nearest exit. Always keep in mind the exits near you when you are walking in public. In the back of your mind always have an escape route. You should leave your belongings behind. You can replace items; you cannot replace your life. Warn others as you are running, if you are able. If they do not comply, leave
The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) classifies an active shooter event as “one in which one or more persons actively engages in killing or attempting to kill people in a populated area” (FBI, 2017). All active shooter events in the United States during
Gunmans in Mass shootings such as Stephen Paddock was the shooter on October 1, 2017 When he opened fire during a show he had killed 59 people and injured 527 people. In the hours after the retired accountant committed the shooting, authorities rolled out frightening new details, including the discovery of scopes on rifles at the resort and explosives at his home.A team of six officers spoke with security at the Mandalay Bay Resort and Casino, where Paddock was staying, and searched the hotel floor-by-floor Sunday night before they found Paddock's room, Clark County Sheriff Joseph Lombardo told reporters.
If you're not in a position to run or leave the room, Huffman says hide. Make sure you're hiding in a place that would protect you from bullets - like behind a concrete wall rather than a wooden door. "Try to keep away from the killer and try to keep the killer from out where you are. As a last resort you have to fight," explains Huffman. He says you should try throwing objects at the shooter or trying to take away the gun. "What you have to do is know, 'I'm going to be afraid' thats okay, I still have to do whatever it is I have to do." Lastly, treat the wounded. Huffman says its critical everyone know basic CPR and how to treat a
“GET DOWN!.... SHHH!!!!.... GET DOWN! GET INTO A ROOM AND LOCK IT!!!!” This is the first thing our opposite crew heard as they walked into the ER with a patient last month. Should this crew have recognized the signs of an active shooter? Is walking into a hospital with an active shooter even a real concern? From 2000-2012, there were 154 hospital related shootings in the United States with 235 injuries or deaths. That’s more than 1 shooting a month. As QIC I will implement parts of the “Active Shooter Preparedness” from United States Homeland Security. Knowing exactly what Emergency Action Plans our hospitals have in place will help us know how to recognize and react to possible active shooter situations. Scene safety is constant with EMS.
I completely support those who stand up for our constitutional right to bear arms, but in light of the recent shootings, is it time for state and federal health officials to declare a national public health emergency? Is it really ok that we be allowed to purchase an excessive amount of firearms, does that not raise any eyebrows? This is a national epidemic. I want to ask Congress to place limits on firearm purchases, ban assault weapons and high capacity magazines, and provide funds for gun violence research. Americans deserve to be able to walk, celebrate and gather in large groups without the fear of random and mass shootings.
All three texts share a common theme on mass shootings while using the research, findings, and published works of Professor Adam Lankford. Each of the texts uses the rhetorical aim Inform and Explain due to all three texts being presented in a expository manner. These texts fit the definitions and criteria for Inform and Explain as they are confident which is shown by making the purpose of the paper known early on and the continued stream of confidence throughout all three texts. In Newsweeks article Study: Mass Shootings ‘Exceptionally American Problem’ the title immediately states the purpose of the article followed by referring to Lankfords work almost immediately on how these mass shootings develop in America. This confidence and purpose
After a gunman bore down on Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School, Maddy Wilford lay bleeding from three bullet wounds, so pale that officers responding to the carnage first thought she was dead.
Admittedly, the amount of mass shootings in America is still going on onto this day, as last week, California had a recent one, carried out by a couple with assault grade weapons. Thus, this topic was brought up countless time on the news, what could be done. I believe pretending is part of the problem. These things happen over and over again and yet we do nothing and pretend it won’t happen again. Changing nothing and then believing something will change is a ludicrous ideology. This same ideology is being used by many Americans, we are given examples of other place throughout the world on how they turn their country gun problem around, similar to Australia, yet we pretend we don’t notice just like we pretend we don't notice our country's
CHARLESTON, North Carolina – What was supposedly a solemn bible study and prayer meeting, turned out to be a shooting fiasco when a young man started to pull the trigger, killing nine people.
Stories of mass shootings have been broadcasted via media coverage for many decades, with the number of shootings increasing rather than decreasing. The question of why such mass shootings continue to occur more frequently has provoked many thoughts to circulate society regarding why this happens, raising questions about what is best for the public’s safety as well as how to inform the public about what has occurred. According to Mark Follman, the national affairs editor who leads a team which is researching and reporting gun violence for a renounced magazine, “Mother Jones”, “there is a growing body of forensic evidence that mass shooters emulate their most infamous predecessors...there are now clear indications that some individuals who plan and carry out these crimes are influenced by sensational news
According to the article a three year old girl was faitily shot and killed in d.c in a second-floor apartment at Benning Terrace by a child playing with a gun. D.C police said a child had a gun in his hands and fired it, turning a innocent summer time play into tragedy when a bullet struck 3 year old Dallas cox in the chest. The police also said we have no reason to belive that it is anything other than an accident, so what we are looking at is how the gun got into the house.
1, 1966, when ex-Marine sniper Charles Whitman killed his wife and mother, then climbed a 27-story tower at the University of Texas and killed 14 more people before police shot him to death. The numbers here refer to 146 events in which four or more people were killed by a lone shooter. An average of eight people died during each event, often including the shooters.” (“More than 50 Years of U.S. Mass Shootings: The Victims, Sites, Killers, and Weapons.” The Washington Post, WP Company,) Shooters may kill a lot of people, thus leaving the police no choice but to kill or wound the shooter. Most of the time the shooter, if caught, wants to be shot, also known as a “suicide
This question is more relevant today than ever. Gun violence is a key topic in news and discussions today due to the Florida school shooting. Personally, for me, it hits home since I work in an elementary school. When you work in a school, a shooting is one of your biggest deepest fears. After hearing about the Florida shooting, everyone in school was talking about it and still are. In fact, yesterday, I had a student tell me “did you know that there was a shooter in Florida that killed students, it happened on Valentine’s Day." I was speechless, what can you respond with? This day in age you can’t promise them that is won’t happen here. All I could say was “I know, it is very sad what happened.” I think that there is a lot of problems that
The crime that this paper will focus on and try to dissect/solve will be civilian mass shootings or as the Federal Bureau of Investigation refers to them, active shooter incidents, where a person(s) goes out into a public setting and tries to kill or injure others on purpose (FBI). The first problem with these types of incidents is gun control because the weapons that are used for these are guns that can be purchased from a store, and even if someone is to pass all the requirements to obtain and use one that does not mean that they should have one because of the risks involving not only them but anyone who might have access to the gun. Then there is the issue of mental health, not just mental illness, because besides anyone with
An active shooter is defined by the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) as an individual who is actively engaged in attempting to kill or killing people in a populated area. If you are like most American’s, you fear the realization of just such a situation in your everyday life. You might assume the police will protect you in such an event. Admittedly, they desire to protect and serve. Unfortunately, the statistics show they aren’t always able to protect innocent people in their incidents, due to no fault of their own. Learn more below:
