Erik Erikson proposed a theory that identity formation was an important developmental aspect of adolescence, which has been characterized by progressive developmental shifts. However, there has been a lack of longitudinal studies that support the multiple aspects of identity formation across adolescent. Therefore, there have been debates on whether or not identity formation fluctuates or if it’s stable throughout adolescence. The main purpose of this study was to provide a detailed review on the changes and stability of identity formation across adolescents ranging from ages 12 to 20.

The study revealed an increase in in-depth exploration across adolescence. Levels of in-depth exploration seemed to be quite stable for girls and boys across early to middle adolescence. Yet, there was a significant increase from middle to late adolescence in both boys and girls. Girls seemed to present more stability and maturity in early to middle adolescence unlike the boys at that age who lacked those social characteristics until middle to late adolescence. The results revealed that girls displayed higher levels of in-depth exploration across adolescent compared to boys. What this study concluded was levels of commitment were relatively stable across adolescence from early to late adolescence. There were no viable gender differences in commitment along with no significant changes in commitment for boys or girls across adolescence. However, there was an increase for in-depth exploration. Levels of in-depth exploration seemed to be rather stable in boys and girls from early to middle adolescence but there were noteworthy increases for both boys and girls in middle to late adolescence.
