According to Cambridge dictionary, Archive is an accumulation of historical records or a place where historical records are kept. Archives are the sources of historical references. Since it is an accumulation of historical records, of the ancient period, signs, drawings, carvings, clay engravings etc. could be considered as earlier forms of archiving. As civilizations arose, the method of storing data also evolved. People started using writings to record about an event or something of significance. These materials are used to learn or understand about the history of the particular community that the writings represent. Modern Archival thinking developed when the Frenchmen established the first Modern archive, French National Archive , as a …show more content…
On one hand we are trying to compress the data; on the other hand the materials are increasing. But the increase in sample size does not always mean that we have more quality sources. Comparing the quality of physical archives and digital archives is not an easy task. While using a digital source, a historian or an academician encounters huge randomness in a single search. It seems that most of the materials provided by our computer are irrelevant to our interest or inquiry. Therefore one could not say that digital forms of archives always satisfy the …show more content…
At this point, it is important to mention that digital space has changed the concept authority (along with authenticity). Archives are no longer under the control of certain groups or privileged communities. During the medieval period, Archives were under the control of the Church. Later, the nation states started gaining control over them. The importance significance of both the groups is that Archives were arranged and provided access in such a way that it protected and promoted their welfare. There was a power structure involved in drafting the content of the Archives. Only those materials which benefited the ruling authority were included as archive sources. One can say, in a way this project was biased (content). The imperial powers were able to draw the history of their colonies by collecting only the required data which concluded in making them superior to the colonies. Up to some extend, this role of authority has changed when it comes to digital Archiving. New academic groups started developing new kinds of narratives of Historiography, that are different from the usual historiographies, with the help of flexibility in authority.
Digitalization has reduced the restrictions over archives. At the same time, there is also a probability of disappearance of Digital sources due to various economical, political and technological reasons. Cyber data can be removed by a professional
The procedures that need to be followed when retrieving information for paper based information consist of finding out whether you are allowed access to the information, finding out where the information is stored if you are allowed access to it, looking for the information, taking it from its storage place remembering how it was stored for when the information is to be put back. The procedures that need to be followed when deleting information for paper based information consist of finding out if the information is confidential or not normally something that is confidential has address or names on it, if the information is confidential then it needs to be cross-cut shredded if the information is not confidential then it can be shredded normally. The procedures that need to be followed when archiving information for electronic based information consist of checking to see if the information contains legal information or long-term business obligations, checking to see if there is more than one copy of the information, if there is more than one copy of the information check to see if the extra copies can be deleted, if the
I have to let the readers know how I stumbled upon this topic to introduce where I get my ideas from. It all started in the archive located on the second floor of the library in a dark corner behind a clear glass doors at the Hunter College. I have been attending Hunter College for four years and never have I stumbled on such an amazing place full of live history. I say live history because all the documents and books that are held in the archive are all preserved originals, which fascinated me. Thinking how people who lived more than century ago wrote and read the same things I’m writing and reading about excited me to my very soul. Archive research though fascinating is not an easy task that can be done in within fifteen minutes like how researches are done these days using convenient technologies at hand.

The second method, destruction, will also secure information found in paper or electronic format. The paper or other hard copy media must be shredded or destroyed in a manner that EHR cannot be read or otherwise reconstructed. Electronic media is to be cleared, purged or destroyed. Destruction should also be performed consistent with NIST standards (Kline, 2009).
An archive is a collection of historical documents or records providing information about a place, institution, or group of people. The current collection consists of assassination records, pictures, artifacts, and sound recordings.
“Working in the Archives: Practical Research Methods for Rhetoric and Composition” is a comprehensive guide for aspiring scholars to navigate research. In chapter --, Lyenee Lewis Gaillet addresses the need to instruct students how to use the research archives and recognize the philosophical assumptions that lie in the worldview of the researcher. Gaillet gives precautions concerning the interpretation of facts, which provoked reflections of my experience processessing artifacts. I took an internship opportunity in a small for-profit museum in Midway, Georgia, a rural town haunted with deep colonial and Civil War history. My primary task was to transcribe unprocessed documents from the museum’s archives.
What I have found surprising about my professional experience so far is how much I have come to enjoy conducting oral histories and working in an archival setting. While volunteering with the Los Alamos Historical Society, my mentor has given me the primary task of helping them complete their oral history project, which has been an ongoing project for the society for nearly a year and a half. The oral history project has provided me with a new perspective of the past. The other task that my mentor has given me is to help the historical society to catalog their archive’s artifacts. I was surprised while cataloging the archive’s artifacts the amount of photographs, videos, and many other historical objects that the historical society possesses. While the projects that my mentor has instructed me to work on while volunteering with the historical society has surprised me in several ways, I
Overall, this investigation has equipped me with a valuable perception into the jobs and obstacles facing the historian, and has entitled me to comprehend the significance of evaluating the accuracy of historical documents when constructing an
In chapter 11 Alexander Stille, explains about how past technology can retrieve the images and data more than the ones you can retrieve from modern technology. All this great information from the old technology is being refurbished to the newer technology where it can lead to an obstacle because if the data are not transferred correctly the information from the past can deteriorate. In the past, paintings that are hundreds of years old still look as new today as if they were painted yesterday but, in modern times we will save it in a smaller space that deteriorates very quickly. Our government and military in the past have tried to make the records digital but, the major problem is to restore records and emails. Military records were stored
Definition of Archeology Uninformed people might think that archaeology is the stuff of Indiana Jones, the character played by Harrison Ford in the classic 1981 Movie entitled Raiders of the Lost Ark. In this movie, Jones was an adventurer and so-called “archaeologist” who sought a golden idol. Jones did not proceed in an orderly, scientific fashion, nor record the surroundings, location, or precise measurements. There are many different definitions for archeology, and here are a few: “Archeology is the study of human history and prehistory through the excavation of sites and the analysis of artifacts and other physical remains” says one source, “It is an area of science that studies people and animals from the past and the things they
Trammell defines archive as an institution of guarded of intellectual power and a place where it can be interpreted. The three categories he used to discuss content for archive are map, brands, and clothes. Board games and digital games, before they showed any images, the players needed to use their imagination to create a world of the game. Most role-playing board games provided a map for the players to see what the world their characters are living in. An example, Dungeons and Dragons, has images of the characters to imagine and the map of the world. In the archive brands are a big part because most of the big companies like Nintendo and Atari, using their name to brand things like toys while using transmedia to create audio tapes and music
The very process of working in the archives with the archival materials was new and fascinating experience for me. I experienced an amazing, almost mystical feeling from working with the very history at my hands, with original documents some of which were fifty or sixty years old. I had a feeling of being in touch with history itself both literally and figuratively. In fact, it’s precisely these experiences and feelings received during my research that make this event stand out for me from other events or experiences. It’s not often that you can be doing something very productive, something so very important not only for you as a student, but also potentially for a wider audience, and at the same time have lots of fun while doing it. Or meet an abundance of nice people like the archive workers who also are very knowledgeable about every subject that their vast archives
They store our heritage. In Mali, there are griots, storytellers who are the living historical record of their community. One griot tells us, “We are vessels of speech. We are the repositories which harbor secrets many centuries old. We are the memory of mankind.”6 As for my own personal history, I would not recall that I once stuck an apple seed up my nose had my parents not told me this precious story. In 6th grade I wrote the biography of my father’s life. To do this, he had to tell me many of his childhood stories. How he got knocked unconscious by a line drive playing baseball. How he had a paper route for $7.50 a week. And how he had to walk to school every day uphill both ways in the snow. I loved sitting with my dad listening to him tell these stories. Some of my favorite memories come from late nights when I couldn’t sleep. We always played this game where I would name three random animals and he would make up a story about it. At the time, they seemed ridiculous, but the meaning of those stories and the times shared with my family meant every
An archive is a large and varied collection of historical documents, records or objects. . It is an extensive record or collection of data. Information collected digitally from computers or media storage applications has protocols that need be followed during the process. The order of collecting digital information mostly determines the life expectancy of information collected (Eoghan, 2004, p. 74). There is a need to change information
