Sport is any organised, competitive, physical and educational activity involving individuals or team. However, sports itself have its value in individual lives and country as a whole. A country has its own popular sports that can be played within their region. In Solomon Islands, there are few popular sports that are played in the country. The most popular sport played is soccer. It can be played both recreationally and competitively. Thus, participating in popular sports in Solomon Islands has its benefits and drawback for participants. To participate in sport can be as player, coach or supporter. This essay will elaborate more on both the disadvantages and advantages of participating in a popular sport, which have consequence in the participant’s health and well-being.
Firstly, participating in popular sport sometimes cause injuries for individuals. Injury is getting hurt during games or practices. In Solomon Islands, there are times where players get injured by the opponent or by themself. Dating back to the B.C, small sports were created for people to have some sort of entertainment and a way to avoid the problems people were facing. These sports were then put into the greek olympics where people competed in different categories and their goals were to amuse the audience and showcase their skills. This is what inspired the concept of sports and since then sports have become one of the most talked about topics and continues to be used for strength and amusement. Doing sports was a way to face fears and overcome difficulties. In fact, sports were what got people through the most difficult times each country has battled. The whole purpose of a sport was to serve as a distraction from reality, but times have changed. Sports have developed into a major justification for the amount of people getting diagnosed with a mental disease. Sports take away the time and energy an average person needs to live healthy and happy. The newer generations don’t realize how sports can have a large effect on a person.
The influence that modern sports have had on society within the past few centuries is profound. Growing up many of us knew the importance of sports and recreational activities and how they benefit both physical health and mental health. Our parents, school teachers, the media, and even our childhood sporting hero’s told the importance of sports and how it can keep us fit and healthy.
Sports are a popular pastime among all ages and types of people. People not only participate in them for fun, but also for money, physical fitness, rush of competition, and for many other personal reasons. Playing sports is especially common among young people in schools. Athletics are great and enjoyable for many reasons, but there can be a point where sports participation can go too far and become negative for children and adults. Sports specialization for young people is an increasing trend that results in sports having a negative impact on individuals and society.
Sports teach important life lessons such as teamwork, discipline, leadership and time-management that benefit males and females alike. Modern society has many ills plaguing it. Some of these ills include excess stress and unacceptable behavior, both of which can be caused by the same thing: unhealthy placement of sports in modern society. By sports being considered practically ideal in society, many child athletes suffer from pressure to win and numerous people suffer from the poor behavior exhibited by certain adult athletes.
In DiFiori’s article he tells us, “Youths participating in sports have opportunities to enhance self-esteem and socialize with peers setting the stage for an active adult lifestyle.” When a child is playing sports they have multiple opportunities to do well in their activity which increases their self-esteem. Coaches will complement them and encourage them as they master skills and perform well. Also playing on a team with other players will increase social skills. The teammates a child befriends while on a sports team will create everlasting relationships. Also, some teammates are hard to deal with. It teaches a child how to deal with adversity and people they do not see eye to eye with. Sports teaches people how to work together with people for a common goal and interest. Sports provides inumerable benefits and lessons that one can use later on in their adult life and in the workforce.
Sport plays a huge role in today’s society. It contributes to one’s health and fitness, social interaction, social and motor skills, patriotism, fun and entertainment. There is a distinct relationship with sport and positive psychosocial development. They learn team work, following rules, playing fair. It also has links between physical sports and social and moral development, learning to deal with winning and losing. Students are full of energy, all of which cannot be spent in studies only. The extra energy can lead students to do wrong or unwanted activities which are harmful not only for the health but studies of students as well. This is avoidable through sports. They are the outlets of surplus energy. Students who play sports have their mind occupied and are less likely to have their mind wander to wrongful things. A student learns that while playing, he has to play not for his own good but for the good and success of whole team. He or she is to keep in mind the success of his or her school. Sports help students lead a more corporate and mature life. Sports teach our students that the ups and downs are the inevitable aspects of life and should be taken in strides. Playing for a sports can help them experience hardships and allow them to face the trials, hardships and various rigors of daily life in the future. The very breath of sportsmanship is fair play. Sports are another name of honesty, integrity and loyalty for students. Thus a good sportsman can be the ideal citizen of the country.
One thing that is a positive outcome in sports is the overflowing happiness people get when they participate in competitive sports. Playing sports blows off steam and helps people relax. “Physical activity stimulates various brain chemicals that may leave you feeling happier and more relaxed. (Mayo Foundation for Medical Education and Research ,Exercise: 7 benefits of regular physical activity, 1998).” Playing sports can help bring families or other kids together to build strong bonds. “It appears that US children are healthy and happy as they engage in this traditional pastime, and families report higher levels of satisfaction if their children participate. (Macdonald, Brian, Kids in Sports, Part 5: Can sports help shy kids to make friends?, 2009).” A pat on the back from a parental figure is enough to keep kids going and doing their best. Because sports make children happier, they are more prone to keep playing which all in all makes children happier and it teaches kids to do what makes them happy. With suicide being the second biggest fatality for adolescents doing what makes them happy can be a life or death situation.

This well-known anonymous quotation conveys the message that sport is the game which has some rules and custom. It is not only for fun and entertainment, but there are also some benefits of playing sports and which gives some important lessons for life. Every kind of physical sports is healthy because it involves running, jumping, stretching, mind skills and much more. There are so many sports available in the world nowadays, but we can categorize them by the numbers of players, the three main categories are individual sport, dual sport and team sport.
