Kees de Hoog is more specific about these generation he said that just because they understand the new technology better than the previous generations this does not define them as more social, smart then the previous generations. He also said that these generation mostly grew up with divorced parents and that this make them more a status symbol with a high expectation to perform huge so that their parents can tell how good their child is. He thinks that if this generation is defined as smart and fast . Then the housewife also belongs to this target, because housewife’s perform different tasks simultaneously. (Wageningen UR, 2006) Even though many think that understanding the modern technology better, does not make generation Einstein smarter or more social, it is a fact that technology changed a lot in our education system and made this generation learn faster than before. There is also evidence that this generation is more social with their colleagues and can fix technical problems faster for their consumers. (Leeuwe, 2008, pag.6) In the article by William Deresiewicz is to conclude that this generation that spend a lot of time behind their screen have created an firewall between them and the ability to really get to know themselves. William Deresiewicz said
The purpose of this news article was to bring light to a topic that adults and non-millennials probably would not comprehend and or understand otherwise about the current generation and what they gravitate towards. Examples of this could be an elderly parent or grandparent wondering why their child/grandchild loves social media so much or a young person being curious of which app they use the most. The article is mostly focused around college and high school students. The research study further goes on to explain why this trend is happening through questions, graphs, and exact numbers. It goes on
In September 2017, Jean M. Twenge articulates the development of generation “iGen” in the article “Have Smartphones Destroyed a Generation?”. In the article Twenge talks about post-Millennials and how they are generally safer and cleaner then past generations have been. The facts Twenge provides are enlightening to the problem areas that need improvement in this generation. Generation “iGen” has become more dependable of technology and has been spending time with technology more than ever before. This generation has become powered by their smartphones; it has changed the way several people live today and has brought many individuals to a point of mental illness.
A modernized education is imperative because students learn better with the use of technology. In order to succeed in the field of education, students must have a sense of today’s fast paced society. With the use of advanced technology in the classroom, students will be able to apply acquired material to the real world. While the old ways of teaching
Along with the progression of society, major advances have been made in hundreds of different fields — particularly technology. Controversy has risen, and debates ensued over whether today's young Americans are really “the dumbest generation,” due to their “money, media, e-gadgets, and career plans” [Source A]. While advances have been made, they have brought with them resources to benefit off of, and ultimately assist in the overall intellect and intelligence of the human race.
Nicholas Carr’s target audience is anyone who uses technology, whether they are the younger generations for it or the more traditional generations against it. He establishes common ground by pointing out some of the positive, along with the facts to back up his theory on the negative. His motive for writing this essay is to provide a connection between the increase of technology to the decrease abilities in learning behaviors.
Through the internet and the change in learning this group is more self motivated to learn from each other versus just from the classroom. They also learn a lot more on their own. This expands “new forms of expression and rules of social behavior” (Source B). Consequently, the internet is more creativity and sense of self. As well as that “what makes these groups unique is that while adults participate, they are not automatically the resident experts by virtue of their age ” (Source C). Proving that Millennials surpass adults in the aspect of technology understanding and knowledge. Overall, the 30 and under generation are more self directed and creative in their learning prior than older
technological advances, versus someone born with a proverbial digital spoon in their mouth. College campuses across the county are crawling with both groups of people. There is no denying that modern technology has benefited the lives of most students and professors alike, but has this gap of understanding been acknowledged? In the article “Digital Natives, Digital Immigrants” by David Prensky, the author encapsulates the importance of bridging the gap between professors who prefer “old school” techniques, and modern students who seek immediate gratification and new challenges through the learning process. Prensky logically articulates the generational differences, the timeless core curriculum necessary for learning, and ways for educators and students alike to help modernize and improve the overall classroom experience.
America nowadays is known as one of the most “techie” countries in the world. But, is that a positive note to have in the United States? According to Mark Bauerlein, an English professor and researcher, no. That is, not a great note because “knowledge and skills haven’t kept pace,” compared to what our ancestors (source 1). But that is their criteria. What if we would test them on our criteria? Would it be the same as if we tested on theirs?Technology does make life easier, but it is our choice to do what we want to do with the technology, we can obtain more knowledge or just simply screw around; honestly speaking: We are not the Dumbest Generation.
The Millennials are stereotyped as lazy, slackers, financially unstable, unprepared for the real world, and many other things. This group of individuals is so large that it is absolutely absurd to classify millions and millions of people these mean stereotypes. “Today, “young people are far more heterogeneous than they were a few decades back,” Mr. Coupland wrote in an email. “It seems pointless to lump them all into one creative slot” (Marikar).” One key difference that this generation brings to the table is that they are excellent at multitasking. Most of the Baby Boomer generation just looks at the word multitasking as an excuse to be on a smartphone, tablet, and computer all at once when in reality it’s more than that. Other generations can view technology as a disadvantage because they feel you are less
Truly digital, this generation is used to gathering and processing information in a snap, although interest in it wanes in a flash also. A majority – well over fifty percent – want to start their own company. Some see this generation as being more like the Traditionalists (1900-1945) because of the recent recession they lived through, as well as the concern for a safe future environment (think of the recent wars, and terrorist attacks). Time will tell on this one, but I am sure the market research professionals will have this generation detailed before you know
As our innovative world is rapidly moving into the future, technology is being invented and innovated at every turn. This technology ranges from top-notch video game systems to microscopic robots made to perform internal surgery. Although these impressive technological improvements were recently made, they are not entirely beneficial because this technology damages our social and learning skills, while also damaging us as humans.
Every day the world is changing and things are done differently. Technology has also affected the way students are taught and in which they learn. It has changed the classroom. Technology saves us time and allows us to access material in only minutes. “The Internet and online subscription databases, even as a supplement to the printed works in the library, allow students to see, and force them to consider or reject, points of view that they might never have encountered in decades past” (Gow 4).With all the time technology produces, it also has downsides and it also may have created a less intelligent society.
It is difficult to compare the older generation with the newer one based on the fact that one had far more superior technology. The pre-millennials harp on that fact by commenting plainly: If you millennials have all this at your fingertips, why aren’t you as intelligent as myself? However, it is unjust to pin this on the newer generation because compared with the oldies’ ability to only memorize, memorize, the under thirty are far more socially aware and street smart.
Throughout this essay I will be discussing how the digital age has transformed society in many ways. The digital age also known as the information age, is the evolution of technology in daily life and social organizations have led to the fact that the modernization of information and communication processes has become the driving force of social evolution.” This is a time period in which we live in now where Internet and email are available; this is an example of the digital age. The Information Age is the idea that access to and the control of information is the defining characteristic of this current era in human civilization.
Technology has been involved in people’s lives forever, especially in the Millennial Generation. This generation consists of individuals born between the years of 1982-2004. The articles “The Flight From Conversation,” “Teens and Technology 2013,” and “Leading The Charge For Change” deals with teens interacting with technology today. Each article has different topics, but they connect through the over dependence of teens to technology. The Millennial Generation becomes less and less in touch with the real world and morphs into a quasi-reality.
