Adversity Leads to Success Adversity is defined as an unfortunate event or circumstance. Adversity doesn’t look at your bank account or how much talent you might have or your home life, it’s something everyone deals with. Choosing to overcome these unfortunate events leads to success. You may have heard of Stephen Curry. He is number 30 for the Golden State Warriors, an NBA national championship team. Stephen wasn’t always a household name, coming out of high school he wasn’t even recruited by any big name schools. This man, an NBA Most Valuable Player, by unanimous vote, was once a five foot six inches, one hundred and twenty-five pound boy. Growing up with a father like Dell Curry, an NBA star himself, it wasn’t hard for Stephen to decide his career path. To make this dream happen, in eighth grade Stephen chose to start doing basketball all year round. Growing up in small town North Carolina, Stephen always wanted to play for the big name schools like, UNC, Wake Forest, or Duke, but they didn’t want him. As a sophomore he was too small, only being 5’ 6” and still shooting from his waist. He spent the whole summer before his junior year working on his shooting form. All his hard work paid off when he averaged 20 points a game that season. Despite these successes, still no top 25 school wanted Curry. Until Bob McKillop from Davidson University contacted Stephen and his family. Bob McKillop said, “Other schools only saw his size, his strength, his stature. I saw
Everyday, we go through situations and experiences that affect us in someway, perhaps even change us. Different situations have different effects. The more difficult the situation is, the more of an effect it has on us. Those hard times can be called adversity. How do we, as humans, react to adversity? What are the possible effects it may have?
It can occur in any form, slightly stressful or devastating painful. It can happen to anyone, rich, poor, big or small. Adversity is inevitable. Most people would consider it very negative with no benefits, but they are not aware of its hidden effect. Roman poet Horace suggests that adversity can cause a person to demonstrate certain talents, which would not have been present if not for their misfortune. People and characters in any literary work experience unfortunate events and put through difficult situations that they need to overcome. Adversity uncovers their concealed gifts that help them through their hardships. Under its effect, it also can alter the process in developing a character and transform them into someone completely different.
Adversity, unfavorable fortune or fate; a condition marked by misfortune, calamity, or distress. Adversity is something everyone encounters at some juncture in their life. Many people concede in the face of adversity, while many people persevere through the struggles they face daily. Jennette Walls wrote The Glass Castle, a memoir that unmasked the dark mysteries of The Walls Family’s onerous life. She continuously proves that no one’s background they can make it through the adversity in their lives. Jeannette captivates the readers by using rhetorical devices. She utilizes symbolism so she can express the importance of certain objects in her life, imagery to include emotion and enthusiasm, and irony to add a little humor to the book.
Adversity is something that many people are able to over come, most people can by themselves, others it requires a lot of help and if they work together and set aside petty fears it will be overcome. When they come out to the other side they will be stronger that before both mentally and/or
In the collegiate world of sports, basketball has become an increasingly recognized sport among African Americans, predominantly males. The hope of any young basketball player is that one day a scout will come and recruit them into stardom The question that presents itself as a problem to the lucky few who are chosen to go professional, is whether or not an education is more important than a million dollar shoe deal, “The NCAA's (1998) annual six-year study reported that only 33% of Black male basketball players graduated, (Chronicle of Higher Education, 1999). Individually, basketball reported the lowest graduation rate in all divisions,” (Robinson, 2004:1). Basketball players have become so idolized in the eyes of young
Roman Poet, Horace’s quote says, “Adversity has the effect of eliciting talents which in prosperous circumstances would have lain dormant.” I agree with his stand on adversity because though it may seem bad, it can lead to finding your true self. If one was not put under enough duress. Then they wouldn't find out what type of person that are now will they find out how they will react to certain things. Having your character developed even more so may potentially lead to a brighter future, because then you may qualify for a position somewhere you want to be.
Without overcoming adversity Jim Abbott would never be the first baseball player with only one hand.Malala Yousafzai would have never brought attention to girls education. Many of the runners from the Boston Marathon would have never ran the race again, and even never race again their life. Adversity, is hard to overcome, but ask is it worth it in the
Adversity is when people have to overcome a problem even though it might be hard for them to do. Overcoming a problem can make people stressed out or nervous that they are doing something wrong. Liam O’Flaherty made The Sniper from “The Sniper” face many hard times throughout the story. While The Sniper was protecting himself from danger, Richard Connell made Rainsford from “The Most Dangerous Game” run from his own game. The Sniper faced adversity by being in the military and making the decision to kill people who were after him. Rainsford faced a problem when a psycho man would not let him leave the island until he made it 3 days without getting hunted. People need to

While enduring a difficult time, people are most vulnerable and receptive, making it imperative to properly handle these misfortunes that shape
In the last ten years many young and talented high school basketball players have chosen to enter the NBA draft. These 17 and 18 year olds decide to skip college, and instead they choose to take a big risk and enter the NBA, hoping to become stars and earn millions of dollars. In many cases, these youngsters’ careers are a failure because they don’t turn out as talented as they thought to be. They end up spending only a few seasons in the NBA because they are not good enough to compete at that level. Many of them have to move on to doing other things, such as playing basketball overseas, doing everyday jobs, or going back to college to earn a degree.
The likes of Kobe Bryant, Kevin Garnett, Tracy McGrady, Amare Stoudamire, and Jermaine O’Neal are setting the tone across the nation for high schoolers considering by-passing college for the NBA. Two of today’s biggest stars, Garnett and Bryant, have never attended college, but both were immediately successful and popular in the pros (Head to Head). The biggest star in the NBA right now, Garnett, is having an MVP-caliber season and is leading his team to their best record in franchise history. The teenagers with high hopes admire these professionals living their dream and hope to someday be in their shoes.
Stephen Curry was born into a family consumed with athletics. His father, Dell, was a standout basketball player in college and a professional player in the NBA for sixteen years. Stephen’s mother, Sonya, played division one volleyball at Virginia Tech (Dell played basketball at Virginia Tech as well). Stephen has two siblings: a brother named Seth (also a professional basketball player) and a sister named Sydel (a college volleyball player at Elon University). As a child, Stephen played football, basketball, and baseball. One of his favorite things to do was watch his father play in NBA games (Fleming). Stephen went to high school at Charlotte Christian School in Charlotte, North Carolina and played AAU basketball (travel basketball to gain recognition from college coaches) with the Carolina Miners (Chandler). As a high school basketball player, Stephen was overlooked by many college coaches because he was short. Curry dreamed of playing basketball at Virginia Tech, where his father and mother had attended and both played sports
