After reading the book Against The Tide by Cornelia Dean I think that the national policy for governing developing coastlines should be dependent on an areas geologic features. In order to do this, government officials would have to evaluate and create detailed reports to battle erosion in specific areas rather than simply proposing a project that worked in a different place. In terms of development, I think that if a project is going to be undertaken over a large area coastal geologists and engineers should make small-scale models of the region containing the planned infrastructure. After a few years, the isolated small scale should be observed for long-term effects so that they are known before construction begins. Additionally, if the
The moment in Guillermo Lavin’s “Reaching The Shore” when Jose Paul unplugged the chip from his neck and realizes that the chip was a fantasy to escape reality. When he realizes “he felt a pain he hadn’t before” (234) this pain had come from his understanding that this chip wasn't real and he won't have an escape like that in the future. The pain was described as a “Whirlwind” (234) this is an exaggerated feeling of being anxious about the real world. Jose thought his father “would surely punish him” (234) Jose looked up to his father and wanted to be just like him when he grows up. Jose father is a hard worker so he believed that his father “would become furious about the theft”. “Theft” (234) to a hard worker like Jose’s father theft
In the book The Killing Sea by Richard Lewis the theme of the book is optimism because in chapter 9 when the tsunami occurred, she kept thinking and looking for her dad when he’s probably dead. On page 1 it says the book was located in Ujung Karang, Indonesia.Wikipedia says, “In 2004 the earthquake and tsunami of Indonesia hit. The tsunami was initially documented as moment magnitude 8.8. In February 2005 scientists revised the estimate of the magnitude to 9.0. Although the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center has accepted these new numbers, the United States Geological Survey has so far not changed its estimate of 9.1. The most recent studies in 2006 have obtained a magnitude of MW 9.1–9.3. Dr. Hiroo Kanamori of the California Institute of Technology
In the short story, “The Boat” by Alistair Macleod, symbolism is used to represent an abstract idea. The boat, being a major symbol of the story was the way of life for the family. As the story goes on, the boat starts to make the family feel confined giving them a choice to leave or stay with the boat. There were symbols that impacted the story that had connection towards the boat. Chain bracelets, the father’s clothes, the books that the father read are all symbols that tied to the boat. The father's chain bracelets and clothes represent the father feeling trapped as a fisherman since he never changes out of them. We find out more about the characters and their personal connection with the boat and the other symbols and what it means to them. The family starts to fall apart due to the kids learning about the father’s books leading to them moving away from home. Symbolism is used when one thing is meant to represent something else adding meaning and emotion to the story which is well represented throughout the story.
This is not just an architectural design and the fashion, but because of the fact that the developers know that the land is being swallowed by the sea. More and more houses, hotels, shops and restaurants have decks and some piers that lead into and over the water. The Florida Department of Environmental Protection even has courses for those in construction to acknowledge the erosion and increase the proper design, construction and maintenance of erosion and sediment control. The beaches, whether sandy or rocky are the buffers that keep the sea at bay from the land behind enemy lines. They are nature’s way of saving all the people and their livelihoods from being swept away into the deep blue yonder. When waves crash into the beach it carries sediment with it and deposits such sediment. The alternative is that when a wave recedes back into the ocean it carries that sediment back to sea. This is usually done at an unequal rate, and leads to coastal erosion. In fact, coastal erosion is one of the reasons we have so many beautiful beaches around the world due to their unique shape. Long shore currents move water in a parallel direction of the shoreline, carrying the sand with it. But as we continue to build piers, docks, sea walls, and jetties
Soft engineering is working with nature by using natural materials or allowing nature to take back areas. some examples of this is beach nourishment is the process of dumping or pumping sand from elsewhere onto an eroding shoreline which is to create a new beach or to widen the existing beach, this technique is natural and makes the waves lose power travelling across it,However it dosen’t last very long and It does not stop erosion,it simply gives the erosional forces (usually waves) something else to erode for awhile, another type of soft engineering is managed retreat which is where Areas of the coast are allowed to erode and flood naturally, this makes the land become an marsh, slowing waves and reducing ersoion, however land is lost. Another type of coastal management is hard engineering involves building structures to protect the coast. Some examples of this is a sea wall, which is a wall set up to prevent the sea eroding an area of land, thishelps prevent flooding, however waves bounce off the wall and scour the beach removing
Topic:'Terry says to Charley, "I coulda been a contender. I coulda been somebody instead of a bum. Which is what I am". Does the film support Terry's judgement of himself?
Smooth Sailing is a private company that operates one cruise ship. Recently, pirate activity in the area where the cruise ship operates has increased, thus affecting the cruise ship’s potential future cash flows. The cash flow decline has directly contributed to a decline in the overall fair value of the cruise ship.
On the Waterfront is a classic, award-winning and controversial film. It received eight academy-awards in 1954, including best-picture and director. The director, Eliza Kazan, in collaboration with Budd Schulberg wrote the film’s screenplay. Based on actual dockside events in Hoboken, New Jersey, On the Waterfront is a story of a dock worker who tried to overthrow a corrupt union.
“On the Waterfront” was photographed in such a captivating way. Boris Kaufman had a vision ahead of his time. Many scenes in the movie are understood, not just through the script, but from the cinematography as well. Three scenes in particular catch my eye. It is the artistic style and flare of conveying the same idea in multiple mediums. The first scene is when Terry and Edie are on the rooftop at Joey’s pigeon coup. This scene portrays the moment in which I believe was the catalyst for Terry that lead him to be truthful to Evie and stand up to Friendly. The second scene that I will speak about is when “Kayo” Dugan is killed. When the preacher is giving his speech to all the longshoremen. That speech was a testament of one man speaking out for what he knew was right. The third scene that I will choose for this essay is where Terry walks to Friendly’s dock office. After the fight, Terry’s march to work puts you on the edge of your seat. Each scene has depth that few movies achieve.
Although there are many environmental issues and geographical issues affecting the Wollongong region especially the beaches such a Woonona, Bulli, Thirroul and Austinmer beaches, there are many management strategies employed by local government to manage these issues. As it is evident that more urban developments are happening where more building are being built, the local governments are doing their best to manage this issue. The local governments are now trying to seek ways to buy properties along the coastal sides and knock them down, where the beautiful headlands once was, hence urban development will be slowly reduced throughout the years.
Nature in The Hungry Tide Nature and literature have constantly shared an intimate relationship as demonstrated in the creations of artists and writers across generations in all societies of the world. The Hungry Tide by Amitav Ghosh is a novel about individuals of his Motherland and the nation itself, beautiful, different, and mythical India. The writer exemplifies brilliant nature, individuals, customs and even issues with tremendous love and respect. The ecological issues turn out to be increasingly apparent, while the specialists do their best to overlook them. It is not only the legislature at blame, but the citizens as well.
Also, the longshore is when the sand is being transfer along the coastline which creates some extensions of the beach. But the only negative is it doesn’t follow the coastline. To fix the longshore, the pick up the sand in the sea and dump it on the coastline near the beach. In addition, dams were created
Henry Wadsworth Longfellow wrote "The Tide Rises, The Tide Falls" he writes it about how the ocean never stops and Mother Nature will always . In this poem, Henry Wadsworth Longfellow talks about how the ocean is consistent and is never changing, while men are always evolving. The poem proves that nature is superior to man.
These are things such as sea walls, groynes and revetments. Other hard engineering techniques are things such as the dumping of boulders and sub surface drainage When deciding what coastal management scheme to put in place whether it a sea wall or an area to hold flood water, the people undertaking the project must look at possible solutions that would be best in relation to physical factors the chosen scheme will be the best scheme to limit or stop the thing that is occurring. They are likely to take into account the rock type in the area the height of land, shape of the land and the cause of the problem. Possible and reasonable solutions would be put forward and the best solution in relation to the physical geography is likely to be put in place.
Port and harbor projects in high eroding stretches of the coast, except those projects classified as strategic and defense related in terms of EIA notification, 2006 identified by MoEF based on scientific studies and in consultation with the state government or the union territory administration.
