Did you know that the Age of Exploration was one the most important time in history for the world. The Age of Exploration began in the early 1500’s in the nation of Portugal under leadership of Henry the Navigator. The first expedition to circle the globe was led by the Portuguese explorer Ferdinand Magellan. The causes of the Age of Exploration was to look for new trade routes and spread religion. The effects of the Age of Exploration were slavery and disease.

In the early 1400’s ,the Europeans began to have control over the world by setting colonies in the Americas, along the coast of Africa, and parts of southeast Asia. This is referred to as the Age of Exploration . This Age was  caused by advances in technology and it was motivated by the desire for glory, religion , and economic factors. The accomplishments of the European Age of Exploration were that ideas and goods were being exchanged, wealth allowed them better ships and navigation tools, and they had the chance to claim land and territories. These factors contributed in bringing a European Golden Age.

During the Renaissance many people were curious about the world, and had a desire to trade. This led to the Age of Exploration, during this time many nations grew more powerful and influenced the world. Europeans started to explore the world for gold. However while on this journey many European explorers did things that were great. Such as taken away natives land and rights, killing and mistreating natives, and lastly bringing a disease that killed thousands. So you then start to ask should these people be remembered today even with all the bad things they’ve done and brought to the world. I believe that European explorers, conquistadors and settlers from the Age of Exploration should no longer be glorified and celebrated in Modern times.

People living the the 15th century had multiple reasons for venturing beyond its confinement of land. Scientific curiosity of the world played a major part in the advancement of naval travel, but it was not the main cause of exploration in these times. The Age of Exploration was sparked by Europeans wanting to find sea routes to East Asia, which they called the Indies. When the Europeans arrived in the New World they treated the Natives of the land very poorly. A picture shows “Spaniards cutting the hands of Natives for not meeting the gold quota.”(Doc 1). After invading the Natives’ land and treating them with such harshness, it shows the negative effect on the New World when the Europeans came. Since so many countries wanted land in the New World they fought many wars with each other. An example of this is “England and France fought several wars against each other in an effort to gain more land in the New World.”(Doc 7). With all the wars going on between the countries and the people that died in the war, the attempt of colonization was also having a negative effect on Europe. One of the worst events that occurred due to colonizing the New World was the shipping of slaves. As people began to have crops and work to be done, they needed cheap labor. The slaves were brought through the Middle Passage in some of the worst conditions such as, “The closeness of the place, and the heat of the climate, added to the number in the ship, which was so crowded that each had scarcely room to turn himself, almost suffocated us.”(Doc 4). This shows that the slaves were mistreated not only when they would arrive in America, but also on there way to their

European exploration had both positive and negative effects. The Old World and the New World both obtained new resources from each other like domestic animals and crops. Negatively, Native Americans became enslaved and disease killed most of them. The Old World and the New World were both greatly affected by this in positive and negative ways. The positive effect of European exploration was that each world got new resources, but the negative effect was that Native Americans became enslaved and most died from diseases.

The desire to explore the unknown has been a driving force in human history since the dawn of time. From the earliest documented accounts, ancient civilizations have explored the world around them. Early adventures were motivated by religious beliefs, a desire for conquest, the need for trade, and an unsatisfying hunger for gold. The great Age of Exploration, beginning in the late 1400s, was an important era in the discovery and development of lands yet unknown to the Europeans. During this period, Europe sought new sea routes to Asia in pursuit of economic gain, increased glory, and opportunities to spread Christianity. Throughout the time mankind has been on this planet, humans have always wanted to explore their surroundings. This is called the Age of Exploration, which expanded everyone’s idea of the world’s geography. There were many reasons on why people decided to explore the world. Religion was a reason to spread the specific religion’s ideas to another place. Another reason to explore was fame and fortune since everyone wants to be eternally remembered.

For example, disease was nearly unheard of in places like the Americas until others began to explore and settle in new areas like it. Some of the biggest examples of this were how European diseases such as the bubonic plague, chickenpox, and even the common flu were brought over when settling the new land. This led to the deaths of numerous Native Americans since they didn’t have immunity to the diseases. Another major negative effect of the Age of Exploration was slavery. An unimaginable number of African Americans were put through it. In a personal account of an African slave going through the middle passage, it was stated that the slave felt as if he almost “suffocated” (Document 4). This goes to show how terrible the conditions were for the slaves at the time of they weren’t even able to breathe. Equally as bad, the Native Americans were treated as objects during the Age of Exploration and treated very harshly as well. In some cases, the Native Americans were treated just like slaves and sometimes if they didn't do what they were told there would be very inhumane punishments. One example of which is when “the Spanish cut the hands off of the Natives… for not meeting their gold quota” (Document 1). It is sad to think that people would invade one’s own land and then treat them in such ways for not doing something they were forced to

In the world, the age saw many explorers in search of a faster trade route to China, which led to the discovery of North America.

The ideas of God, Glory and Gold were the key encouragements on the Age of Exploration. The Age of Exploration was a time of the spread of Christian faith. Europeans took missionary trips to spread the beliefs of God. The expansion of Christianity caused multiple other religions to convert to European beliefs. The competition to discover land first was present during the Age of Exploration. There was a search for riches among all of the countries on unclaimed lands. The strive for “Glory” introduced the idea of merchantism to the New World. The search for material gain was also a cause of the Age of Exploration. During the fifteenth and sixteenth century, exploration expanded dramatically. The Spanish, Portuguese, and English explorers during that time period had much in common, but also had their differences. First was their desire to search for new land in order to colonize it. Additionally, these explorers were searching for a variety of different plants for which they can use for food and medicine. They also wanted good soil in order to produce more crops. Furthermore, they all were in search for silver and gold in order to establish wealth in their country. Although these explorers had common objects that they were looking for, they also had many differences.

The Age of Exploration was a time period that brought the two worlds together. All the while England and France were at war, and the Europeans were discovering the New World and their actions caused great changes for both worlds. But what are the causes of the whole age of exploration era? The main causes were the European desire to find ocean routes to East Asia/the Indies, the interest in spices, the new advances in knowledge and technology, the Europeans wanted to break the control that Muslims and Italians had on trade routes, the new opportunities for knowledge and wealth, and to spread Christianity.

     The Age of Exploration was a time of struggle and wealth for many European countries. The pursuit of a trade route to the Far East led many countries across the ocean, looking for the great spice cities that were rumored by Marco Polo. These countries knew that whoever found the shortest or best route would become rich, very quickly. Explorers from many European countries embarked on journeys that not even they had any clue where they were going. This search for the Far East led to many discoveries that would otherwise have never been found.
