Over the years, music has really become one of the main forms of poetry, but are the songs you’re listening to really a poem? Poetic merit are basically the points in a piece of literature that makes it a poem. In this essay I will be analyzing the song “You Ain’t Never had a Friend like Me” from Aladdin, by Neyo, which to me is saying that Aladdin will never find a friend that will back him up as much as the Genie. I believe this song is indeed a poem for the following reasons: it has a consistent rhyme scheme, it has lots of poetic elements, and the song itself has a lot of meaning and symbolism. This song has a consistent rhyme scheme all the way through the song. Every other line rhymes with the one two lines before it. For example, “Well
“There are a number of different lyrics used in songs that have been derived from poetry” (Kumar). Poetry is an older form of art and song lyrics have evolved from the art. However, it is a great debacle over which one can be considered the higher art form. The underlying question is if song lyrics have evolved past poetry, or has poetry remained artistic and intellectual. Despite bearing some superficial similarities, the differences between “To a Daughter Leaving Home” and “Never Grow Up” in imagery, message, and point of view are prevalent causing poetry to be considered a higher form of art.
The poem does indeed have a rhyme scheme, yet doesn?t conform to conventional forms of rhyme such as A, B, A, B, etc. Rather, each stanza seems to follow the order of A, B, C, A, C, B, which may not be apparent to the reader at first, but doesn?t
What is poetry? Is poetry about your feelings? Is poetry meant for you to deliberate or read between the lines? Elizabeth Alexander, a black educator that teaches poetry, believes that poetry is where you are your true self and finding yourself. In 2005, she published one of her poems called “Ars Poetica #100: I Believe.” She constructed the poem to speak to her students about her meaning of poetry. Poetry causes various emotions, various content, and based on various forms of realities.
She also presents a slight rhythm to the reading that allows for smooth reading. In keeping with her open form, there is no set scheme to the rhyme pattern. However, there is a single ending sound constantly repeated without a set pattern throughout the work. She also connects pairs of lines at random just for the sake of making connections to make that particular stanza flow. At the same time, she chose blatantly not to rhyme in certain parts to catch the reader’s attention.
The words are definite rhymes so they’re appealing to listen to and the stresses at the end of the words add power to the lyrics. This series of rhymes is one internal rhyme followed by two end rhymes. In line 9 he raps ‘You vandalize my perception but can’t take style from me’ then line 10 ‘and this is more than a confession’ with the last line of the series, line 11 ‘I mean I might press the button just so you know my discretion’. The three rhymed words are ‘perception-confession-discretion’. This series of a perfect rhyme is easy to recognize as a rhyme series while listening. My next favorite series of lyrics involve two lines with polysyllabic rhymes and an end rhyme. In line 12 he provides a line that is a polysyllabic rhyme ‘Institutionalize manipulation and lies’ followed by line 13 ‘reciprocation of freedom only live in your eyes’. Line 12 rhymes twice in one line using ‘manipulation and lies’ to rhyme with ‘institutionalize’ and then following it with an end rhyme in line 13. The next use of polysyllabic rhyme involves anaphora. According to Adam Bradley, anaphora is a rhetorical scheme establishing a pattern of repeated words (Bradley, 114). The sequence of rhymes in lines 16-18 reveal Kendrick’s creative poetic abilities and interesting mixture of parts of speech. The anaphora of a phrase is present in all 3 lines and he uses end rhyme in the last 2 lines. Line 16 says ‘You hate my people, I can tell
The poem does not follow a rhyme scheme or meter, which means that there is rhythm in the poem and it makes the poem more like a song. The poem has four stanza’s and has five lines within each stanza.
A common theme among many scholars is modern poetry lacks poetic merit. The modern version of poetry is more often than not, found as music and more specifically as lyrics opposed to stanzas. “Traditional” poetry is known for its poetic merit; however, modern poetry, music, also has elements that can be found in traditional poetry. Poetic merit usually refers to the use of numerous poetic elements: figurative language, imagery, symbolism, allusions, etc. Though scholars may regard music as lacking in poetic merit, the song “Glory” by John Legend and Common proves otherwise through its use of symbolism, alliteration, and allusions to put forth its emotional lyrics that depict the struggles of the Civil Rights Movement.
Poems like these are still written in today’s society but are expressed through different mediums than the poetry of old. While this song was originally released in 1928, it didn’t gain popularity until 1939. In today’s society, poems are found more often in music than in a book, although those are common too. Song’s in today’s society often rhyme or tell a story and can be analyzed just as poetry
The poem, “Po’ Boy Blues” uses rhyme in the fourth and sixth lines of each stanza.
Music. We all listen to it, don’t we? For those of you who don’t believe that music is poetry, I will change your minds in less than four paragraphs, using the song, “I’ll Make a Man Out of You” as an example.
In today’s modern view, poetry has become more than just paragraphs that rhyme at the end of each sentence. If the reader has an open mind and the ability to read in between the lines, they discover more than they have bargained for. Some poems might have stories of suffering or abuse, while others contain happy times and great joy. Regardless of what the poems contains, all poems display an expression. That very moment when the writer begins his mental journey with that pen and paper is where all feelings are let out. As poetry is continues to be written, the reader begins to see patterns within each poem. On the other hand, poems have nothing at all in common with one another. A good example of this is in two poems by a famous writer by
The fourth line uses two verbs, which have internal rhyme to make the line flow
· But line 3 of stanza 1 becomes the rhyme sound for the first, second
Poetry is a varied art form. Poetry is expression with words, using aesthetics and definition. Word choice in poetry is the single most important thing. Devices such as assonance, alliteration and rhythm work in a poem to convey a certain image or to facilitate understanding. Similes and metaphors can take two unlike objects, such as a potato and cinderblock, and if done the correct way use them to describe how Abraham Lincoln dealt with scoundrels. Poetry is beautiful. One of the best genres in poetry, let alone a great literary movement is Romanticism or the post-enlightenment Romantics.
Poetry allows the writer, the reader and even those listening to get a deeper sense of being. It gives us the opportunity to break free from simple and boring routine. If done correctly a poem will done correctly a poem will be able to stir emotion, and create wonder. In order to this however all the part that make up a poem must be in sync. Its tone, diction, imaginary, rhythm, symbolism and subject matter are all critical areas. A good poem will draw an emotional reaction from its audience, whether those are light and upbeat or darker more serious feelings they will come away with a new experience, changed by what they just experienced. Two such poems that embody what a good poem should be are “Lady Lazarus” by Sylvia Plath and “Harlem”, also published as “Dream Deferred” by Langston Hughes. These poems elevate the experience for reading, listening and writing poetry, and serve as an excellent reference for a poem should be.
