I was fortunate enough to participate on a mission trip to New Orleans, just a year after Hurricane Katrina occurred. It was a horrific sight, all those people in such grief, and fear in their eyes. A desire was instilled in my heart to help those affected by such tragedies. I will never forget one of the nights there, my church group visited a small church that had just finished being rebuilt. They had lost everything in the storm, some even lost family members. I noticed an elderly woman sitting alone in the back pew, I walked up to her and asked if I could pray about anything for her. But she told me to sit down and listen. “I lost everything in this horrific storm, my house, car and all of my family. But I have my church back and that is enough for me. I thank God for allowing me to be alive, I am one of the lucky ones.

In the past year, we have had three hurricanes hit the United States and several shootings, one right after the other. The ones that were not affected by the hurricanes or the shootings are supporting and helping those who were. One of the news articles that I have read said that a cruise ship canceled one of the most profitable times of the year to go help the people on an island that are stuck there from all of the flooding. The recent act of people coming together was the shooting in Las Vegas at a concert. That was a crazy time, all those people

In a fast paced instant gratification world it is easy to forget about other people's tragedies. During my sophomore year a close friend of mine had a common cold, the common cold turned into something never expected. After being put into a medically induced coma, he was diagnosed with Encephalitis. Encephalitis is an inflammation of the brain caused by infection or an allergic reaction. At the end of sophomore year a fundraiser was held for my friend, John, along with visits to him that year that seemed to be the only action people took.

In conclusion, I believe a strong community is made of members that peg and treat each other as themselves; that care and show kindness toward each other, just like how a bone and sinew hold strongly together. Being part of the community, we are liable for the other members in the community. We must never ever treat each other balefully like a fraud or elude helping the family that suffered colossal loss. We must all have the same impetus to try to extricate the family from the horrible situation. We can donate, be kind and generous towards people who are in need of succor. If you are not willing to help people, someday, when you are desperately searching for help, nobody will be there for you.
