Two of the main elements in any poem are theme and symbolism. This holds true in Alicia Zakon’s poem titled “Remote Control”. It essentially tells about the relationship between a man and a woman, and how the man has the remote control to the woman's life. The symbols used are very meaningful to the overall theme. The theme of "Remote Control" is also very important, and not just a topic for a good poem but a real problem in society too. The writing would be much less effective if not for the symbols used throughout the very strong overall message.
Symbolism is defined as the practice of representing things by means of symbols or of attributing symbolic meanings or significance to objects, events, or relationships. The whole

Zakon tells the woman to look back to when she gave the man the remote control to her life, and how she could have prevented it. She then makes the reference to "fast forward your life", and tells the woman how things will be the same as they are today, and the woman will still hurt inside and the man will still control her life. "Reset you" is one of the strongest lines in the poem, informing the woman to reset her life and take back control. Zakon then tells the woman to "push play", and start her life anew.
The theme is very important in a poem, because it is the implicit or recurrent idea throughout the writing. The theme in "Remote Control" is how not only the man in the poem controls the woman's life, but how it happens all over the world everyday. Many women suffer day in and day out, whether it is because they are afraid of what will happen if they do not let their man control them, or if it is because they are too insecure to change. When men try to control women, they are demonstrating their own weakness in this regard. In other words, the implicit assumption is that men are too weak to control themselves. When a man cannot control himself, he turns to other options, most of the time the female in his relationship.
In conclusion, almost no poem is complete without the use of symbolism. Symbols are often used to take the poem to a higher level. Furthermore, the theme of a poem is equally important. The theme lays out the meaning or message
Symbolism, symbolism the use of symbols to represent ideas or qualities. Throughout the book, The Other Side, the author uses symbolism. In the book Anne, a young white girl, says, “Someday somebody’s going to come along and knock this old fence down.” She does not mean the fence itself, she means the boundary between blacks and whites. The fence in the book is a boundary between the houses in the neighborhood.
Symbolism is a major literary device that helps people see a book through symbols that often have a deeper meaning. A symbol is used to explain something in a different way, using images, objects, etc. instead of just saying it in words. As you search for a deeper meaning in a work of art or literature it can help you understand the authors intentions and the deeper significance of a work. In Fahrenheit 451 by Ray Bradbury, symbols help reinforce the major themes of the book.
explicitly. Symbolism is the use of symbols to represent ideas or qualities. At the end of Chapter 9,
Symbolism is the practice of representing things by means of symbols or of attributing symbolic meanings or significance to objects, events, or ideas. Symbolism is one of the most common practices of writing, and has been used for centuries. Symbols can often tell a story better than a human can because of there deeper meaning. When epic poems became popular during the Anglo-Saxon period they were filled with harrowing tales of bravery, and courage. Epic poems are long narrative poems that often have characters facing impossible tasks and still finding courage to defeat them. While many marvel at the original Anglo-Saxon dialect of Beowulf, Seamus Heany's modern English translation allows all readers to enjoy this tale.
Symbolism is usually used to represent things that are meaningful without actually saying so, you’ll sometimes have to read behind the lines. Symbolism can be used as an artistic or poetic way of writing to represent an idea. There is a lot of symbolism used in the novel “Kindred” by Octavia Butler, she uses symbolism through her character Dana’s constant physical and emotional pain, it’s a motif. The constant pain and abuse Dana goes through represents the fact that whenever Dana travels back in time and gets hurt weather emotionally or physically, she never comes back as she originally was, she brings back a reminder of the past with her.
Symbolism is a characteristic that stands out in a person or thing. People usually use symbolism for something that means to them or represents to them. The symbols are used for many things, for example the apple on the iphone, laptop or iPod symbolizes the brand. Symbols are also used in churches, for example the cross symbolizes Jesus Christ. It symbolizes how he was crucified, put to death on a cross. The colors symbolize something’s to for example the colors white, red and blue symbolize freedom in the United States, it also represents the United States flag. Symbols are also used in movies like the hunger games catching fire; their symbol is a mocking bird with an arrow on it.
Many authors use symbolism to help their readers grasp the concepts they are trying to convey. They take concrete items or ideas to represent something abstract.
Symbolism, is also, another way of doing things. You can do things different with this. Like in the lottery, It symbolises death, if you get a doth on your piece of paper, you will die. So it's a 50-50 chance of you living or dieing. People don't like the lottery because it symbolises death..
According to Goia’s glossary of terms “a symbol is person place or thing… that suggest meaning beyond its literal sense…is related to allegory…works complexly... usually contains multiple names and associations.”1 Goia defines symbolic acts as involving “conscious or unconscious acts of ritual like rebirth, purification, forgiveness, vengeance or initiation”.2
Symbolism is a literary technique that is used to clarify the author's intent. Sometimes it is used to great effect, while other times it only seems to muddle the meaning of a passage. In "Young Goodman Brown," Nathaniel Hawthorne uses objects and people as symbols to allegorically reveal his message to the reader.
Natasha Saunder’s “Love is All Around”, a short twelve line poem with a three two line stanza, that has heavy significant meaning behind it despite the length. This poem tells a story about how Love can be found anywhere and everywhere and how the love that other’s can give you can be an uplifting powerful feeling. The first word in the poem is “love”, the main focus and theme of the poem in itself. The author uses this word as it’s first in order to capture the attention of her audience and connect the main focus within the rest of the poem.
Symbolism is when the author uses an object or reference to add deeper meaning to a story. There are hundreds of different symbols authors and poets use and even more ways for them to use each symbol. If you think about it anything really can be a symbol if the author wants it to be. There are some basic things to know about symbolism such as that the night often represents death and the morning usually represents the start of life, another big one to remember is that usually a storm is meaning that there is a conflict. There can be things as Broad as the sky or things as small as a cell used as a symbol. They enhance the theme, ideas, or characters in a story to make it interesting or help prove a point or
Symbolism is the use of symbols to signify important meaning to things. These symbols could be basically anything in which a meaning is more than just the literal context. Hawthorne has several uses of symbolisms in his stories. Symbolism was very popular literary device during the Romantic period, where the object embodied some sort of idea. “The symbolism of his works focused on isolation and guilt of the individual, the uncertainties of good and evil, and the continual hold of the past on the present. Hawthorne focused on his Calvinist lineage and America 's Calvinist ideological past, as well, in hopes of coming to terms and making sense of it. Hawthorne 's writing is full of symbolic characters, settings, and objects. Hawthorne 's
The use of visual imagery in each poem immensely contributed to conveying the theme. In the poem
All authors of famous short stories want their reader to be engaged in their readings. Most authors have their own unique and different ideas brought into their text. That’s what I think symbolism means in terms of English Literature. It is creating the background for us readers. The author wants us to connect the dots in the story. When the author makes the connection, we are more engaged and interested in what else he has to write. Most symbols used in literature are objects used to represent other things or ideas. There are several ways to recognize symbolism in literature. One of common ways is the frequency an object or character is mentioned in a piece of literature. If it is mentioned often, it is probably important. (Jones) Another
