INTRODUCTION
When picking out your mascara or eyeliner, do you even stop to think what is in that product or what the process is to make it? You could be supporting animal testing and not even know it. According to PETA, it is estimated that each year 26 million animals in the United States are used for animal testing(2017). As many may believe that animal testing is the only way to find out new things or test products, it is not, there are new alternatives that scientists have found like in vitro methods, and studies with human volunteers that have been proven to work without harming these animals.
ALTERNATIVES TO ANIMAL TESTING Every year, millions of experimental animals are used all around the world. The number of animals used

This group is interested in the safety evaluation of chemicals or biological products based on alternative methods of testing strategies, performed by the industry in lieu of good old but crude conventional toxicity testing in live animals(Liebsch, Grune, Seiler, Butzke, Oelgeschläger, Pirow, Alder, Riebeling, & Luch, 2011, pg.849). A lot of medical breakthroughs involving animal research may still have been made without the use of animals and resources dedicated in finding new solutions. The ZEBET wants to find an effective way to reduce and replace the use of animals in testing. Many different species of animals are used for testing, but the most common include mice, rabbits, birds, dogs, monkeys, and much more. Common procedures used is forcing chemical exposure to these animals by force-feeding or having chemicals injected into their body. I disagree with this misuse of animals, if animals are providing us with finding out new things that can help, then why would people want to hurt them. This group also found that scientists prolong periods of physical restraint and inflict wounds on these animals. The result of this is most of all animal testings fail in human clinical trials making them useless.
ANIMAL TESTING IS STILL THE BEST WAY TO FIND NEW TREATMENTS Some people do believe that animal testing is the best and only way to find new treatments. Animals species used for preclinical
Imagine being born, only to live a life of torture. You are brought to a lab, and cruelly tested on against your will. Toxins poured into your eyes, painful injections to your skin, then left to die when you’re no longer useful. Although many do not realize it, people use products tested on animals in their everyday lives. For girls, many of your favorite makeup brands, such as Estee Lauder, Makeup Forever, and Maybelline take part in animal testing. Products such as toothpaste, cologne, deodorant, laundry detergent, razors, and even band-aids aren’t tested innocently, either. As a makeup enthusiast, I am passionate about how the products I use daily are tested. Today I will help you understand what animal testing is and how it started, how it’s currently affecting animals around the world, and what organizations are doing to help make a difference in the future. To begin, I will explain the history of animal testing. An animal test is any scientific experiment or test in which a live animal is forced to undergo something that is likely to cause them pain, suffering, distress, or lasting harm.(https://www.crueltyfreeinternational.org/why-we-do-it/what-animal-testing) Animal experiments are not the same as taking your animal to the vet. Animals used in laboratories are harmed, not for their own good, and usually killed at the end of an experiment. Animal experiments include injecting or force feeding animals with potentially harmful substances, exposing animals to radiation,
The harmful use of animals in experiments is not only cruel and inhumane but also often ineffective. Animals do not get many of the human diseases that people do, such as major types of heart disease, many types of cancer, HIV, Parkinson’s disease, or schizophrenia. There have been past occasions where drugs passed on animals weren’t even safe. There is no excuse for animal testing in today’s techy world, there are now many alternatives for animal testing that would put an end to the pain and suffering endured by these innocent animals during human testing.
Animal testing, as previously mentioned, is not as reliable as it is made out to be. It is extremely difficult to replicate the complexity of a disease in humans and translate it to an animal through artificial induce it into an animal. Even if the disease is successfully replicated animals often don't react the same to medications as humans do (Akhtar, 1). The best example of this is that of Thalidomide, which despite animal testing caused deformations in babies born from women who took this drug. After the incident, producers retested the drug on animals, still not finding said deformities in any of the animals it was tested on (Greek, 1). In the article “How Reliable is Animal Testing” Author C Ray Greek makes the statement “An animal that responds like humans to one medication will not necessarily respond the same way to another medicine”, which was the case in the incident with the Thalidomide. This oversight when testing animals can lead to unforeseen fatalities and did lead to the deformation and in many cases death of thousands of babies affected by Thalidomide (Greek, 1). Animal testing is not only unreliable but in some cases even harmful and often does not lead to break through discoveries in the scientific field. In the article “The Flaws and Human Harms of Animal Experimentation”
There is many reasons why the opposing viewpoint find animal testing to be an effective method. Many would argue that animal testing has contributed too many cures for illness’s and treatments that are life-saving. In an experiment done in dogs eventually led directly to the discovery of insulin, which is critical to saving the lives of
Have you ever witnessed a white mouse with the terror filling his eyes as he looked out of his bleak cage and into the face of the big man with the lab coat? Or have you ever seen a pregnant rabbit being tortured by the people you call scientists? One of the questions facing society today is whether or not animals should be used in scientific experimentation. Animal rights activists have pointed out the fact that animals play an important role in nature and human’s lives. Killing animals for any purpose is one of the steps that will destroy Mother Nature as well as the human race. For this reason, animal testing should not be used in scientific welfare and cosmetic industry.
Animal testing has helped us for years discover cures for sickness in humans and sometimes even animals. But as long as they test the animals humanely, animals can be tortured with pain from the testing. However many efforts are being made to reduce the testing to a minimum. Scientists know that without the tests they wouldn’t know how to check the safety of new drugs.
The structural differences between animals and humans sometimes lead to inaccurate result. Not only have that, the harsh and brutal experiment on the experimental animals caused them to go through dreadful, painful emotions. Since alternative tests like in vitro continue to improve and evolve in the research community, animal testing can slowly be replaced. According to Gregory Mone “In vitro and in silico testing will play a much larger part in how we assess chemicals in the future” (Mone). The advancement in science is encouraging but at cost of the animal’s suffering and lives is inhumane and should be done away
Thesis: The debate on whether using animals is the correct choice of method for testing out experiments and products, is still up for discussion, considering that animals have helped us in finding many treatments and cures in the past. Today, with new technology, we no longer need the use of animals, as there are now alternatives to this practice. Companies and labs that originally started out using animals as test subjects are starting to switch over to new alternatives, as they are more accurate compared to the old methods that was used in the past.
Recently, the problem of animal testing has aroused people’s concern. Between twenty-five and fifty million animals are killed in American laboratories each year, and these animals include mice, rats, cats, monkeys and son on. Animal testing is one of the traditional approaches to studying how human and animal bodies work, and it is also frequently used to test medicine and chemicals. For example, a lot of medical students do animal testing to help them learn more about the medical science and finish their assignments. Since the technology has developed, there are all kinds of drugs and chemicals that are manufactured by humans, and animals are increasingly used to make sure the drugs and chemicals work, especially when a new disease is
There are many reasons why animals should not be used for experimentation. In the article, “Animal testing is outdated, imperfect”, Ryan Ballinger states, “ One thing i found is that alternatives exist, such as human cells or artificial skin” . This explains how we have the ability to test on different resources and alternatives . This reinforces that there are different ways to find medicine and cures for humans instead of making innocent animals
Much progress has been made to end this testing, gearing the world into the right direction of animal testing free procedures, though, not everyone is on board. The United States have yet to hop onto the train toward a free animal testing future. The United States continues to test on animals for cosmetics even though there are numerous ways to test, without using animals, that are more efficient and effective than animal testing. (3D tissue samples of corneas made from human cells can be used instead of using an animal organ when testing for cosmetics side effects.) What is worse than the United States still testing on animals, is that there is continued demand for even more animal
To envision an innocent animal trapped in a cage, ready to be examined and awaiting death. Seems somewhat cruel and inhumane to society who oppose animal cruelty. Many creatures just as rabbits, mice, monkeys, even dogs and cats are killed yearly in laboratories for research. Scientists examine animals claiming how research enabled the expansion of many life-saving treatments for both humans and animals. Stating that there are no alternate methods for researching, however mentioning that there are strict regulations to prevent the abuse of animals during experimentation (Lawrie, 2014).
Today’s society is focused on the affects of diseases on the human body, and how to prevent the side effects associated with the disease. The controversial topic of using animals as research subjects is highly debated of whether it is necessary to save lives or inhumane to the animals. Every year, animals are experimentally used to determine the effectiveness, side effects, toxicity and safety of medications. Personally, I was aware of the testing being done on animals, but did not know much about it, and was therefore indifferent in the debate. However, after doing research, I have come to the conclusion that the cons outweigh the pros and animal testing is inhumane.
More are becoming aware of the limitations that animal experimentation has and are seeking a better method. Chief executive officer of Humane Society International (HSI) Andrew Rowan believes the possibility for an alternative can be a reality thanks to the technological advances made, Alternatives such as micro analytic techniques and improved cell-culture systems. In Rowan’s view, “we believe that within the next decade or so, we will reach a point where safety testing and risk evaluation of chemicals will be conducted in a fraction of the time, at a fraction of the cost, and with greater predictive relevance for human and environmental safety compared to current, cumbersome animal-based approaches” (New Technologies Could Eliminate the Need for Animal Experimentation). In making this comment Rowan urges us to see the benefits from the alternatives compared to the current inconvenient animal experimentation that is a flaw. These alternatives are both in the best interest for humans and animals, scientist will be able discover answers to severe medical problems without harming animals ending animal experimentation as well. We should not have to choose between saving humans and harming
Did you know that more than 100 million animals are tested on and killed in a year from testing. Countless animals get tested on, on a daily basis. As well as they have made many stuff that helps humans. But animals should not get tested on because animal test do not reliably predict results in human beings, animals tests may mislead researchers into ignoring potential cures and treatments, and alternative testing methods now exist that can replace testing on animals.
