Based on the supplementary readings, I believe that the Civil War and Reconstruction failed to produce equality and freedom to the former slaves in America. Although these events are a major development in the process of liberating African Americans from slavery and dehumanization, many obstacles still exist in which the black community suffered from discrimination and lack of basic rights as a black man in the late 1800s. For example, black soldiers were recruited into the Civil War due to shortage of manpower and “receive the sum of ten dollars per month…[while]..the regiment would...be allowed the three”(Gooding, "We Feel as Though Our Country Spurned Us"). The land of opportunities is also known as the United States, which is a place of freedom when the Gonzales family leaves their home and everything else, to better their conditions. Fifty-eight percent of immigrants migrate to the United States to provide themselves and their children a better life full of freedom and rights never given to them before. The United States provides people with a job and minimum wages which are a major factor for immigrants.

America has been talked about as the land of freedom, opportunity and a promise of better life for everyone. But has it always been all of that? the people who came to America in search of better living circumstances, did they find what they were looking for, or were they disappointed, forgotten and overlooked left to take care of themselves how they could. People who migrated over from Europe, came in large numbers once word of prosperity and better life reached their countries seeking better life and new beginnings. The African Americans who used to be slaves before but were now freedman, did they have the same rights, power and freedom as those who used to own them or even the somewhat decent life of the European immigrants? What about the people who came from China, Japan? They left their homeland too, and came to America to improve the lives of their children, but did they find what they were looking for or were they disappointed?

Since America is mostly considered as a place for better opportunities, people are going to America for studies or for jobs. In other words, today’s immigrants prefer to come to the United States because it has freedom of speech and religion. Also, many people see America as the land of opportunities, the land that makes peoples’ dreams come true. While reconstruction and industrialization opened up many doors for minorities, the timing of everything was very poor. Minorities specifically African Americans had just gotten their freedom and were just starting to try to catch their footing finicialy. This put them behind the eight ball, because as too many of us are familiar with you need money to make money. This was a sad reality for a lot of our nation during reconstruction and industrialization, and because of this reality many suffered. However, along the same lines it did create an opportunity for those who didn’t have money to make a living.
