America 's A Country Divided Essay

Patriotism is not something that you see a lot of in Urban Communities. A lot of urban homes don’t teach their children about being patriotic. Many believe this is still a “white man’s country” In the Article “Urban Perspective: Flag –waving and Patriotism Far From the Whole Truth; Part 1” Author Larry Aubry a longtime community activist he believes that a lot of Black Americans have mixed feelings about patriotism due to the past and present treatment of African Americans in America. America gives off the perception that the house with the white picket fence, dog and two kids is the “American Dream”. In fact many people in urban communities don’t even own their homes. In the Article “Reinventing America Call for a New National Identity” by Elizabeth Martinez she believes that “White America” makes us believe they settled America for all people. In reality that is not true because the Native American had already settled here. Patriotism is something that I hope to see being instilled in the next generation of urban youth, but not force upon them. David Noise who is an author and activist tells us in his article “Is American Patriotism Getting Out of hand” he believes that patriotism is something that should not be force to the point that it causes a division it should be something that brings us together as a whole. America is a land of very diverse people from all parts of the world. They all have wide varieties of interests, which are represented by both parties of its political system. The Democrats and Republicans represent two different standpoints; although they concentrate on the same issues both of them have different views on how the issues should be addressed. Two presidential campaigns in which the parties’ candidates differed on the issues are that of 1988 and 1996. Democracy only works when the people who represent the masses differ on the issues, so that to protect our freedom and the parties of our political system are the best representation of this ideology.

In recent years, Americans have become more divided as a people. Many people say America has not been as divided since the Civil War as we are now. America is not supposed to be divided, but lately, it has been. Overall, Americans have been divided as a whole, and some of the main reasons are because of politics, wealth, and race.

The Divided States of America is a documentary by PBS Frontline, in which they analyze the stalemated America that Obama took over in 2009 and issues he faced, and later divided America that Trump took over in January. The documentary purpose was to show the effect of the division within the United States and encourage listeners to consider the future effects of Trump’s presidency, It elaborates on what actions Obama took which led to such a polarized nation, where some strongly supported him, while others strongly disagreed.

The election of 1860 and 2016 divided our country. There are some similarities and differences, but both elections had the same effect. Each point in time had problems, and each candidate had a different point of view on how to solve these problems. The people who are voting for our future president need to have some background information, so that’s what I’m going to give to you. Hopefully after reading this, you will be sure the person you’re voting for is right for the country.

A good analogy of this is the case of the racism against all muslims. History may repeat itself which it has before. What the american people don’t understand is, who would you feel if you were accused of being a threat to the country just because of your skin color. For example do you this it’s a good solution to put all caucasian people into camps to make school shootings less likely to happen, just because white people are the leading race of people to commit school shootings? You would most likely think that is an extremely bad idea considering you are taking a whole race of people away from everyday life right? Well this exactly what the Japanese were suffering. Due to this act of racism the Japanese-Americans had lost thousands of dollars due lost homes and businesses(Video). Japaneses-Americans were forced to close down all their businesses and move into camps due to the racism of the US government.

The White-Americans have stereotypes of being biased, well-off, pretentious, oblivious, egocentric, and naive about other cultures. More so, they favor their own people and culture. Throughout my education, I’ve attended predomanitly African-American schools and some schools with mixed cultures. Going into high school, I encountered my first conflict with multiple White Americans. The first two years of high school, I attended a predominately White-American school. Have you ever been in a situation where you have to choose one side or another, but agree and disagree with both sides? Everyday American citizens deal with this problem everyday of their lives. There are two sides, or parties, of America, Republicans and Democrats. These two parties hardly, if ever, agree with a particular issue. However, they always find ways to disagree, and explain why the other side is simple minded with a particular issue. The government in the United States supposedly revolves around American ideals such as equality and diversity; however, this is simply not the case as perpetuated by class inequalities. The meaning of democracy has been skewed in the United States to represent something entirely different than it did in 1776. Today, American democracy behaves more like an aristocracy, where the upper class exercises power within the government and state, influencing discourse and therefore the laws and resources in our country, which are purportedly “for the people”. Democracy is presumed to provide everyone with equal political power, but the government in today’s America, although seemingly following this ideal model, does not. Instead, the elite upper class has a monopoly over the political influence and are the sole benefactors from public policies due to their influence over the policy making process. The upper class has an overall benefit from class inequality, as it greatly impacts American ‘democracy’ through the significant power gained through money and status, leadership roles that impact government, and the influence in the policymaking process that creates upper class advantages.

Our nation’s history plays an important role in American society, it sets forth the foundation on which our morals and values are based on as Americans. If we truly are one united nation under God, and our morals and values are based on what history tells us, why is it then that there is so much disparity among the American people. One reason is that our history textbooks and what we are taught by educational leaders only emphasize American Exceptionalism. The history of our nation is not fully disclosed, it omits the nasty and ugly parts. It is time that the U.S. let their skeletons out of the closet, the truth needs to be told no matter how ugly or nasty it is. The period in history known as the Nadir of Race relations, 1890 through the1960’s between whites and blacks is a prime example of American Exceptionalism.

The United States is considered a melting pot because of the vast array of different cultures, ethnicities, and religious groups who all live within its borders. Other countries with fewer cultural differences have been torn apart by the conflicts that arise between these differing groups. It is believed by some that the United States has been able to avoid such ethical conflicts as have brought down other nations but looking at American history it is evident that this is not true. America's history is one of ethnic conflict because of religion, nationalistic, and particularly ethnic differences. The two centuries that the United States has existed has been a history of racial marginalization particularly against African Americans which culminated with the Civil Rights Movement of the 1950s and 1960s. In the present, the United States likes to claim that as a nation, we are color blind but evidence exists to the contrary. The Klu Klux Klan (KKK) still exists, hate crimes are committed based on ethnicity, and stereotypes are perpetuated in order to minimize and ostracize. Despite these instances, the country has held strong largely because although these instances occur, they are not approved of by the government or those involved in criminal justice.
