American Revolution Women's Rights Analysis

During the American Revolution, not only did men have to face the struggles of war time atmosphere, but women had to as well. The country during the war was divided into three different groups of people; the loyalists, the patriots and the remaining people who did not care. Catherine Van Cortlandt, a loyalist had to endure different struggles then the patriot women Eliza Pinckney and Abigail Adams. However, parts of their stories are similar when it came to their family struggles.

The American Revolution was an important sequence of events over a period of time that has affected early American society up to today’s modern society. It all started with the Revolutionary War, which led to the Declaration of Independence from Britain, and in turn created a reason for America to write the Constitution and develop their own government. Ideas of equality became a major point of the Revolution, and although it wasn’t very quick to happen, ideas eventually spread throughout the colonies, giving the equality that poor to middle classes, African American slaves, and women deserved.

The American Revolution caused a change in America that was far greater than just the forming of an independent nation. In the years after the revolution, a government had to be set in place. The new nation was greatly influenced by models of previous governments, including Great Britain and ancient Greece and Rome. Despite the great change in political structure, aspects of social culture were influenced by the revolution as well, especially in the areas of slavery and the status of women.

Martin, she spoke of the hard lives women dealt with during the war. She wrote about how the women who were affected by the war and how they reacted to their situation. She went into many aspects of different women’s experiences by their writings and actions throughout the war. There were many examples of pain and heartache that the women of this time dealt with. Women of this time period were forgotten, as well as the pain they suffered from all that came with the war. The American Revolution was a war between the 13 colonies and Great Britain. The colonies, trying to gain their freedom, revolted against their mother country, which resulted in a war. The war lasted from 1765 to 1783 and as a result, the colonies gained independence from Great Britain and became the United States of America. While white, male Americans participated in the American Revolution, women, African Americans, and foreigners were also involved. While women, African Americans, and foreigners participated in the American Revolution, their contributions and motivations varied.

Back in the mid 1800’s the first women’s convention was initiated by Elizabeth Stanton, along with others who founded the Women’s Suffrage Movement. After attending an World Anti-Slavery Society meeting, where the women were required to sit is a separate area away from the men, the women decided that they were little better than slaves and decided to do something about it. The American Revolution, which happened during the last half of the eighteenth century, reshaped many aspects of life in America. The desire of the Founding Fathers to make America a republic played a very significant part in changing the role of women after the Revolution. The role of women as wives became more important as an emphasis on virtue was established; women were encouraged to find virtuous husbands and utilize their seductive nature to keep men virtuous. The roles of women as mothers also became more important in the republic, as patriarchy loosened and mothers were depended on to educate their children in the republican way. Today, women are believed to be equal to men however this was not always the case. During colonial times, women did not have the same roles as women do today; men and women had fixed roles in society. Roles between men and women do not exchange due to strict gender roles. Additionally, married women were not exactly considered as companions instead, as the husband’s property. Although gender roles were a significant issue among women in early America, another issue was the background of these women. Factors such as race, religion, geography/region, and social class were substantial to the extent of control a woman had over her own life. The American Revolution played a significant role in lives of nearly every person in America. Most men left their wives, mothers, sisters and daughters in charge of farms and businesses when they left to fight in the Patriot armies. There were many men, who had no farms or businesses, left their women with absolutely nothing to fall back on. Throughout history, battles and wars have been fought to gain some type of rights or freedoms. In 1775, the American Revolutionary War was fought for independence; In 1865, the American Civil War was fought to end slavery. Although no wars were fought, many battles were waged for women 's rights. The struggle for women 's rights begin in the mid-late 1800s at a time when women were not allowed to vote or own property. Women, as with African-Americans, during this period were not recognized as having any legal and political rights as men and whites, respectively. This attitude towards women, at the time, was ascribed to the “gender rules in the 1700s” where men thought of “women as fragile creatures always in need of male protection and always denied access to the public sphere." (Lecture 2, 6:19). If women wanted to gain their individualism, rights, and freedoms they were entitle to; they would have to unite and create opportunities to do so. The inequalities women faced was the foundation of the Women 's Suffrage Movement and many other organizations in support of women.

Thomas Jefferson wrote in the Declaration of Independence that “all men are created equal,”, but the Declaration did not extend “Life, Liberty, and the pursuit of Happiness” to slaves or women. The two most controversial reform movements which strived for the racial justice and the equality of the genders in the United States are abolitionism and the woman’s rights. Sally G. McMillen was narrated this historical story of Seneca Falls Convention in 1848 was a dramatic movement of a group of women who strived for the Women's rights. The four remarkable women are Elizabeth Cady Stanton, Lucretia Mott, Lucy Stone, and Susan B. Anthony, who active in abolition and women’s right movements, intended to call attention to unfair treatments of women.

In the American republic rights and responsibilities were the stable of keeping the society going. Men felt that women’s main responsibility was to teach their sons how to take care of property and make them good citizens. They also took care of all the house work such as laundry and making sure the children behaved themselves. It was frowned upon for women to read novels or to use their imagination and there were scarcely educational opportunities. Benjamin Rush feels women should be a complimentary partner towards men. This is accomplished by being able to write legibly, read, have knowledge of geography, be able to sing, and dance. Also, in order for their sons to be taught well women must know something about bookkeeping if something was to ever happen to their husbands. This way the eldest son could take over the property.

Activism for Women’s Rights in the United States dates back to the 1700s, a period that saw increased activities by women groups who sought to gain constitutional equality in America. From the early years, the issue of inequality of women and men as perceived from the light of the American constitution bothered the women fraternity.

Many women’s rights activists have been at the forefront of confronting domestic violence and other issues affecting women. Due to the government’s suspicion of large-scale protests and rallies, many activists rely on creatively presenting their activism as art, which does not require as many people participating in such demonstrations and arouses less attention by the government.
