During a time of great need and conflict during World War Two, President Franklin D. Roosevelt called upon American industry to be “the great arsenal of democracy.” The American people heard him, and stepped up to fit the bill. World War Two has always been known for its drastic impact on the world due to the lives lost, countries ravaged, and horrors witnessed, but the war continued to impact the world long after it was over. On the American home front, the war began a change the economic and social culture of the country that would shape its future. Before the conflict in Europe even began, the U.S. economy was struggling to stay afloat with millions of people unable to find work of any kind. The huge increase of demand for workers in the war production industry presented a solution to the problems our national economy was facing. Sixteen million American men served in some capacity during the war, a number that would seem to cripple the work force needed to be the “arsenal of democracy.”1 However, women, who had previously been expected to stay at home and tend to the needs of the household, decided to break away from the expectations of the women of the time and go to work in the war factories to fill the void left by those who went to fight. This gave women freedoms that they had never had before and would not easily give up.

Merriam-Webster’s Dictionary and Thesaurus defines the word adapt as a verb and its meaning is “to make suitable or fit (as in for new use or different conditions)” (14). Most people in the United States would say that the ability to adapt is simply a part of the American way of life. Americans have always relied on this trait from the early days of British colonization to present times. It can be demonstrated in all facets of life. Adaptability was the reason the old frontier was populated; people adjusted to the unfamiliar climates, conditions, and lands. Immigrants were able to and continue to be adapt to the American culture and thrive in the United States. Americans adapted to the threat of the enemy during World War II and had to acclimate to a life full of restrictions in their day to day activities. In the military, soldiers must adapt to a new way of thinking to allow themselves to become warriors. Now Americans must adapt to a life lived in view of everyone with the use social media and camera ready cell phones. Throughout the course of American history and into our present times American citizens have depended on their ability to adapt; whether it be mentally, physically, and/or emotionally. It was imperative that citizens were adaptable in the past and it continues to be so today, not only to survive but to prosper.

David Kennedy’s Over Here: The First World War and American Society gives the reader an in depth description of American history during Americas involvement in World War I. The book covers from President Wilson’s war message to Congress on April 2, 1917 to the Armistice on November 11, 1918 pointing out major dilemmas within the country, whether they are political, social, or cultural. Kennedy starts the book out with a prologue that sets the scene. After the prologue, Kennedy jumps into explaining the war and the thoughts of the American people about the war that was carried into the battlefield. Postwar means relating to or the characteristic of a period following a war. The Postwar America began in 1946 and returning veterans faced a severe housing shortage. Meeting economic challenges were hard, because their lives had been in uproar throughout the war, and aspiration for stability made the country more conservative. Social unrest persists, because problems began to surface not only in the economy but also in the fabric of society. Also, after WWII, a wave of racial violence erupted in the South.

Throughout history there has been competition for resources and domination. This competition has led to conflicts that have caused destruction, social disruptions and death. World War I was no exception to this competition. World War I was known as the war to end all wars and was caused by a combination of factors. Some causes of World War I was nationalism, imperialism, militarism, and the main cause which was the assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand by Gavrilo Princip of Serbia. While the United States attempted to remain neutral and stay out of the war, Germany choose actions that gave the U.S. no choice but to enter and help their Allies defeat the other powers.

For many years now the people in power or “whites” have passed laws so that other racial groups are kept at the bottom of the social hierarchy. These racial group that are kept at the bottom become racialized and oppressed therefore they become unequal to the people that are at the top of this hierarchy. The racial groups that are kept at the bottom vary from the Native-Americans to the Mexican-Americans and obviously the African-Americans. In this essay I will be comparing how the racialization process has been similar and different between these racial groups. I will also define race and racialization. Furthermore, I will explain how class, gender, sexuality, and citizenship has impacted the racialization process within these groups.
