Most of the advertisements that are published are airbrushed. Airbrushing is an popular method that a myriad of companies use to make their products look higher quality. Even the models shown with the product are airbrushed. The airbrushing completely distorts the model’s physical appearance. Although it may not seem harmful, airbrushing the models and products is not healthy for consumers to see. According to Jack Solomon in his essay, “Master’s of Desire: The Culture of American Advertising,” Jack Solomon claims: “Because ours is a highly diverse, pluralistic society, various advertisements may say different things depending on their intended audiences, but in every case they say something about America, about the status of our hopes, fears, desires, and beliefs”(Solomon). It may seem like the company who designed and create this ad just put whatever looked best and would draw the viewer's attention but the use of word and images on ads go much deeper. For example this ad was found while shopping for shoes online. This ad shows a persons holding a cigarette, this persons hand is shaped as a gun but what the ad wants to readers attention to go to would be not the hand in the front but the shadow in the back, the shadow is a hand but instead of holding a cigarette, the hand is holding a gun. This shadow is meant to represent the reality of what a cigarette can do for a person's health.

Over the years the size of female models in advertising has decreased significantly. Today the average model ways up to 23% less than an average women. The use of Photoshop adds to this by creating perfect skin unattainable even with makeup, along with making the models appear even thinner. Given that these women often set the standard for beauty wouldn’t this lower women’s self-esteem. These “perfect” and unrealistic models in advertising negatively affect body image (the way we see our own body) and distort our idea of beauty. Negative body image can lead to depression, the development of eating disorders, or the abuse of weight loss drugs or anabolic steroids.

Carl’s Jr. started these racy ads back in 2005 and are known to feature models in bikinis in their advertisements to try and attract younger men.
