America’s First Lady of Courage and Picturing History both presented individuals who faced many challenges. Helen Keller, the main focus of the first article, struggled with deafness as well as blindness, while Mathew Brady struggled financially. In the case of Helen Keller, the article stated that, “Helen’s parents knew they had to do something about her wild behavior. They hired Annie Sullivan to tutor her.” This was a critical moment in Helen’s life, as Annie helped Helen to learn how to more appropriately communicate with others as well as be able to spread the word that those who struggle with various disabilities could still manage to do great things. Brady’s struggles were much different from Helen’s in that he struggled financially.
Throughout history, people have been made into heroes. These heroes are portrayed as perfect or without mistakes. Helen Keller and Woodrow Wilson are two of the heroes who are discussed in the chapter. Helen Keller is famous for being the deaf-blind girl who learned how to read, write, and speak; but not much is known by the public about her political views. Loewen states, “Through research she learned that blindness was not distributed randomly through the population but was concentrated in the lower class,” (pg. 14). Men would become blind in work accidents, while women would become blind from syphilis, by working as a prostitute. In her later years, Helen Keller raised funds for the American Foundation for the Blind. But, Helen Keller was also a radical Socialist and supported Eugene V. Debs as he tried to become President, a fact that would construe Helen poorly, if the fact was widely known, and not as the hero many Americans and people around the world see her as today. The 28th President of the United States, Woodrow Wilson, is shown positively in textbooks, but there are parts of his life that aren’t covered. Loewen writes, “Under Wilson, the United States intervened in Latin America more often than at any other time in our history,” (pg. 16). Wilson is seen in textbooks to remove his troops, but not sending them in, quite
Through writing, Keller portrays her physical disabilities as a challenge she must overcome; Keller writes at a high academic level which proves to her audience that her external appearance does not reflect her mental ability.
Imagine being confined to a windowless, pitch-black room. No doors for light to seep in; no spatial clues at all except a thump in the face once you reach the other side of the room. On top of that, there’s no sound. There’s nothing there to make sound, but there is a vague understanding that other warm-bodied creatures are in the room, too. This must have been what Helen Adams Keller’s life as a blind and deaf person was like. However, none of it stopped her from becoming one of the most celebrated persons with disabilities the world has ever known.
A wise woman once said “A good leader inspires people to have confidence in the leader, a great leader inspires people to have confidence in themselves.” These wise words were stated by the 32nd U.S. First Lady and civil rights activist, Eleanor Roosevelt. This quote has shaped the leader I am today and inspired my leadership philosophy. I believe a leader should always lead in a way that inspires others to be greater. As an older sister, I aspire for my sister to have confidence in me but also in themselves. This also applies to any leadership opportunity. I also believe that a great leader must also be a great follower. This has proven essential in my life and strengthened my leadership skills. My time as a follower has made me the leader
I strongly admire Helen Keller, who is one such example of a woman who did not let the society or her disability restrain her. Helen Keller was unbelievably intelligent despite her being deaf and blind. She is one of the many inspirational women who broke society’s stigma of women and their capabilities. She brought courage and hope to other individuals who were disabled and significantly changed their lives. When a woman is this passionate about learning and making a difference, there is no chance of stopping her because she will breakthrough.
Helen became the first blind-deaf person to gain a bachelor of arts degree. She could not have done it without the help of Anne at her side signing the letters from every book and every lecture into her hand. During school, Helen became a published author and continued to write for the next 50 years. Helen’s first piece of writing was, “The Story of My Life”. This story is about all of her life struggles and how she learned to cope and overcome her
First lady is the unofficial title bestowed upon the wife of the president of the United States. The role of the president of the United States originated with George Washington and so did the role of the first lady. During these times, the roles of women were usually limited to being homemakers and hostesses. Women did not work outside the home and often were not seen as equals to men. Therefore, the first lady’s duties at that time consisted of hosting social events and keeping the house in which the president lived in order. Through the passage of time, the role of women has undergone a metamorphosis. Women are now on a more level playing field with men and often hold powerful positions in the workforce. With this change, the role
In the book I read, I Am Helen Keller by Brad Meltzer, a little girl, Helen Keller, overcomes being blind and deaf. Helen is able to learn many things with her disability and made large impacts to other people’s lives. Helen was strong and believes everybody can overcome any obstacles that comes their way.
Helen Keller was a true hero, at heart. She was a courageous, bold, and intelligent woman. Her courage was proven when she spoke of her support for the women’s rights movement, in spite of many churlish reactions from the public. She also faced public outrage when accused of copyright, at the young age of eleven. Not only was she courageous, but she was also bold. She, though deaf and blind, shared many opinions with the public. She also wrote books and articles on her beliefs to spread her perspectives, and to share her life. Helen Keller was a woman filled with intelligence. She chose to fight for knowledge, though deaf and blind. In spite of many warnings, she got accepted into Radcliffe College, despite its low acceptance rate. She passed their standards, despite her handicaps, because she did not want to settle for one of the normal schools with a lower standard. Helen Keller kept trying to get accepted into Radcliffe College until she succeeded, a blind and deaf girl who got
I believe that Senator Hillary Rodham Clinton has the better chance of becoming the first woman president of the United States. She is a former First Lady and has had input in the decisions of the Clinton Administration. She worked hand in hand with former President Bill Clinton. She is very smart, a firm believer in her causes such as, helping everyday people, the underprivileged and minorities, etc. Hillary is very outspoken and her voice is heard. She has always believed in advancing the cause civil rights. (Listening to the Media)
Rosa Parks faced many difficulties by the objections she went through, including the negative stereotyping in her times and all the prejudice people she would see. Although she went through that day after day, one day she decided to speak up and face this obstacle she had going on in her life. In addition, these challenges influenced her life by making her a stronger, genuine person who ‘till this day is history, since she stood up for what she believed in and for her rights.
Helen Adams Keller was born on June 27, 1880, in Tuscumbia, Alabama. In 1882, she fell ill and was hit blind, deaf, and mute. Helen Keller is an admirable woman in history because she helped other people with similar diseases and was the co-founder for the American the Civil Liberties Union (ACLU). Meanwhile, Anne Sullivan helped her with her life, education, and social activism. As Keller grew up in her childhood she had a companion, Martha Washington, who helped her develop a limited method of communication.
Helen was an inspiration to many people that shared the same challenges as her. Striving to do better, Helen overcame her life obstacles of being blind, deaf, and mute. It showed that she was devoted to bettering herself as well as her lifestyle.
When I was in 12th grade and while my English teacher was talking about American figures, he mentioned Helen Keller. I couldn’t wait to go home and read her biography and since then, Helen Keller is one of the most figures who has influenced me in my life. Her health condition has not been an obstacle to be an author, political activist, and lecturer. Moreover, Keller was the first deaf-blind person to earn a bachelor of arts degree. Reading about her life made me think of how strong, diligent, and inspiring she was. Sight and hearing are major senses to be an author, however, Keller was an extraordinary person who achieved what healthy people can’t do. Keller also taught that deaf people can do things that normal people can
At a young age Helen was determined to go to college without a shadow of a doubt. To preparation are for Radcliffe College she entered the Cambridge School for Young Ladies. She did very good in the school, and a few years later Helen entered Radcliffe College and received a Bachelor of Arts edge and the first deaf-blind person to do so. While she was a student at Radcliffe she was interested in writing and wrote her own biography there which was The Story of My Life which was the first story she ever wrote. Even though Helen graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree she saw herself as a writer first. Helen wrote a series of books for a person who was deaf and blind. Keller went to become an amazing and world famous author and speaker. One of the best ever and most likely the best women to write books. Even though she wrote a lot of things at a young age the things she talked about were very mature. Many people at the age she was
