In “Mother Tongue” the author Amy Tan wrote about her experiences with the English language and how it, depending on how it’s used, can signify one’s “worth” in the eyes of others. Throughout the essay, Tan highlights her mother’s use of language, how people and she herself, as the daughter, perceived her mother to be based on her “limited” English. “Mother Tongue” by Amy Tan has a lot of strengths and weaknesses. Amy Tan is a writer, but she isn’t a English major, so she has her own habits when writing. Some of her weaknesses are the word choice and diction in her writing for example she said “ I was giving a talk to a large group of people, and the same talk I had already given to half a dozen other people”(506). The author described a time when her mom went in for an appointment about a benign brain tumor that a CAT scan had revealed. Her mother said she had spoken her best English, she had tried to make no mistakes. The hospital then informed her without an apology that they had lost the CAT scan and that her visit was pointless. She told them that she had lost both her husband and son to brain tumors and that she was anxious to know her exact situation. She wouldn’t leave until the doctor agreed to call her daughter, Amy Tan, to speak for her. After a while of resistance the doctor finally called Amy. And after they had talked to Amy, who spoke perfect English, they assured them that the CAT scan would be found, promised that a conference call would be held, and apologized for any harm her mom went through for a regretful mistake. What we saw here is that people disrespected others based on how they spoke. This didn’t seem like a situation where there was a genuine misunderstanding and that they did all they could to assist Amy’s mom, even with the slight language barrier.
