Thesis: Amy Tan’s story “Two Kinds,” shows how a mother's pressure on her daughter to become extraordinary can make a daughter's quest to be ordinary a great struggle. The short story “Two Kinds,” written by Amy Tan, tells about Jing-Mei’s complex relationship, as a child, with her mother, Mrs. Woo, who had immigrated to America from China years before. Mrs. Woo had a very harsh past in China, having to give up the lives of her two daughters to be able to leave, and as a result has very strong beliefs for life in America. Spending much of her life in China, Mrs. Woo is not yet completely acquainted with the American culture. Mrs. Woo believes that in America, with a good amount of hard work, one can become anything they choose; as a result, she has very high hope for her daughter, that she would someday be a prodigy. At the start, like any young daughter, Jing-Mei is very enthusiastic about her mother's beliefs in her. Jing-Mei says in …show more content…

When she goes back to the old song book and piano and views “Pleading Child,” the song from her recital, along with another song on the opposite page, titled “Perfectly Contented.” Jing-Mei, being in her thirties now, says, “And after I played them a few times, I realized they were two halves of the same song.” This sentence has a much deeper meaning in the story than just showing that the songs were connected. She realized she had to give up the role of the pleading child in order to move on to the next piece of her life, perfectly contented. It was not until that point that Jing-Mei realized the child she once was, and starting seeing things from her mother point of view. She never realized, as a pleading child, how much her mother gave up for her, so she could have a better life than her mother did.
