The Differences between American and Chinese Society In the story Two Kinds by Amy Tan, Jing Mei, a Chinese American girl struggles with her identity and learning how to balance her mother’s wants with her needs. Jing- Mei’s mother feels that obedience to her should come first and following her own aspirations should not be a consideration. With the pressures of pleasing her mother and still discovering one’s shelf, Jing-Mei searches for balance but finds conflict, confusion, and disdain. In the beginning, Jing-Mei was eagerly hoping to make her mother proud. However, her mother’s obsession with molding her into a child prodigy discouraged Jing-Mei from fulfilling her goals. The fun part of the story is that her mother pushes in all kinds of directions while searching for a natural talent that she seems certain must be lying dormant in her little girl. Although unsuccessful in finding some hidden talent, her mother settles on piano lessons and hopes that perhaps, with practice, the prodigy can come out. Jing-Mei rebels against all of her mother’s fussing, not understanding that the hope that she has for her daughter stems for a realization that her own life will never truly be anything grand. Even as Jing-Mei loses interest in becoming a prodigy, her mother continues to push her on. She decides to arrange piano lessons for Jin- Mei without consulting her first. In doing these things, Jing-Mei’s mother wants to control not only her actions but also her dreams, and she will not tolerate disobedience. She says, “Only two kinds of daughters can live in this house. Obedient daughter!” (Tan 294)When her mother hires a deaf piano teacher to train her scene is set for Jing-Mei to fake all of her practice and lessons and waste her time ideally. “When my mother told me this, I felt as though I had been sent to hell. I wined and then kicked my foot a little when I couldn’t stand it anymore” (Tam 291). She feels she has been fortunate in her mother’s blunder; however, when a talent show comes along her instructor and mother sign her up to showcase her escalating piano skills for the entire Chinese-American community.
