An Age of Inclusion: The Silent Movie Era in Deaf History “[Charlie Chaplin] is able both to make himself understood and to understand me. He is an artist” (Schuchman, 1988, p. 24). This was told by Granville Redmond, a prominent deaf actor and painter in Hollywood during the silent movie era, with the height of his career mainly in the late 1910s. He was a close friend to Chaplin, acting in multiple movies with him and being a documented member of Chaplin’s close group of friends. This description of their relationship, captured by Redmond, documents the shared sense of acceptance and inclusion not only in this working relationship and friendship, but can be viewed as a greater example for the acceptance and equality that deaf people in general felt during the era of silent movies. This time was one of the first, and only for many decades to follow, that truly allowed opportunities for deaf individuals to work with hearing people on equal grounds. It was a time that allowed the Deaf community to participate in mainstream American society’s cultural events by attending movies just as freely and often as hearing people. While reading " Deaf in America: Voices From A Culture " I notice the purpose of this book was to wrote about Deaf people in a new and different way. The book main focus is that Deaf people have a condition that they can't hear. The culture of Deaf people is what both authors want to begin yo betray. What I found interesting while reading is that the majority of indidivauls within the community of Deaf people do not join it at birth. While reading these chapters I've seen both auhtors try to present the culture from the inside to discover how Deaf people describe themselves and how they think about their lives.

Last week I had a chance to watch "See What I Mean" and this video gave me a humorous and enlightening look at the differences between them. In this movie "See What I Mean", issues such as attitudes toward time, taking time to say goodbye, complain about the use of phones and pagers, sharing information, giving and receiving criticism, and comments on personal appearance are explored and humorously discussed from the point of view of both cultures.

They discuss that they don't want to be seen as people who need help or want sympathy because being deaf is not a disability. In the movie they state just some of the misconceptions that people have of deaf people. One being that they can’t do the same jobs as hearing people because its hard for them and theyre going to need assistance; that is not true; it’s sad that people believe that just because they can’t hear that they’re anything less than intelligent in a certain field.
In “Through Deaf Eyes” you will find a range of perspective on the question what is deafness? This film is a balanced presentation of deaf experience. I believe that the film does a good job of revealing the struggles and triumphs of deaf people in society throughout history. The documentary covers a span of close to 200 years of deaf life in the United States. You will see experiences among deaf people in education, family life, work, and social activities.
Bob Hiltermann is a famous deaf storyteller, actor, comic, and musician. He was born in Wiesbaden, Germany and became deaf at the age of four due to spinal meningitis. His family assumed that he was slow and it wasn’t until he was ten years old that they finally realized he was deaf. When Bob turned eighteen, he attended Gallaudet University. While attending Gallaudet he learned American Sign Language, which would eventually lead him to become a confident and successful signer. Bob grew up in a family of classical musicians and this shaped his love for music. Despite being deaf he has become an accomplished musician himself and is the drummer for a famous all deaf band named Beethoven’s Nightmare. He has also experienced a very successful career as an actor and has starred in many award winning documentary films, TV, stage productions, soaps, and feature films. Bob has also helped create and star in an educational sign language series called “Shut up and Sign” (Hiltermann, 2016).
Bernard was born on September 27, 1928 in Brooklyn, New York to parents who were also deaf. Bernard’s first role model in life, much like many young men, was his father. The name of his father was “Wolf Bragg, who was a talented actor” (“Bernard Bragg”, 2007). Wolf was not a well know actor but was involved enough in the theater to cause Bernard to take a large interest in the matter. Bragg attended school at the New York School for the Deaf, which is referred to as Fanwood by many members of the Deaf community (Evans, 2015). After completion of primary school Bragg continued his education at Gallaudet College, as it was known at the time, and studied theater.
The book also describes how life has changed for deaf adults through the years. Previously, many deaf adults were not able to get jobs in many places, because there were not many places that were accepting to them. These days, however, almost every business or company is looking for those that are fluent in American Sign Language, due to the simple fact that they would be able to accommodate that many more people and earn more money for their business. Also, there were not many outlets for deaf adults to use in relation to entertainment or basic needs, because again, mostly everything was catered to hearing adults only. However, they have recently developed many different ways for the deaf to communicate with the hearing and with one another, including TTY, full-keyboard, and internet phones and closed-captions on television stations and movies.

However, when examined more closely, it is very apparent and inspiring how much Harry Potter relates to the Deaf World. Understanding Harry Potter- Parallels to the Deaf World talks about how different lenses can be used to look at literature in order to gain new perspectives as well as an appreciation for literature and human life.
