I believe that President Woodrow Wilson's speech in which he asks Congress to declare war on Germany is an example of how American nationalism can easily motivate political parties that are bickering within Congress to compromise. President Wilson originally delivered the speech on April 2, 1917, to a joint session of Congress. He delivered this speech after months of German submarines harassing American merchant ships in open waters as well as the large controversy of the Zimmermann Telegram, when Germany tried to convince Mexico to join them in a war against the United States. Public outcry became too strong for President Wilson to ignore, and so he spoke to Congress. Shortly after his speech, Congress easily passed the vote to declare war on Germany and enter World War I. I believe this is so because of the unique nationalistic feelings present within the United States that Wilson replicates within his speech. Throughout the message, Wilson constantly reminds Congress of this fact, implying that they have to make a decision now or the United States will become submissive to the German government, which President Wilson is not willing to do. Consequently, this pressures the Congressmen into deciding whether they want to go to war or try to remain neutral. Since Wilson's entire speech is about going to war, the political parties are not concerned about their own personal agendas but rather the defense of the country and democracy as a result of the nationalism and pressure Wilson puts on them in his speech.
