After much contemplation and careful assessment of the two charities, I have concluded that GiveDirectly is the fitting charity for the class to donate its $300 to. Although the Against Malaria Foundation or AMF was rated higher on GiveWells than its counter part GiveDirectly, I believe that GiveDirectly, if given the needed resources, will have a much greater overall impact compared to that of AMF (GiveWell). This is due to GiveDirectly having a greater effect on families it donates to, as well as the overall economy of the state, and through that, the overall lives of everyone including those that did not receive the funds directly. The first premise needed to prove my thesis is, if GiveDirectly supplies funding to families those families will benefit. This idea direct deposit or as some refer to it “handouts”, is a complicated one to many individuals, but if broken down it becomes obvious that it is not a “handout”, but a future investment, an investment in the economy. In order to realize this investment, one must understand that the health of the economy is dependent on labor and the publics overall wealth. Thankfully GiveDirectly, who was founded by Harvard and MIT economic development majors have an understanding of this concept and as such have created this forward thinking charity (GiveDirectly). They realize in order to boost the economy of let’s say Kenya, you need to boast the overall wealth of Kenya’s public. So, with this GiveDirectly program they are able to
In the past 25 Years, poverty has been a steady condition in United States history. Not only that, but today there is even more discussion focused on poverty. More and more aid seems to be going to minorities. This segment of the population has retracted to working multiple jobs while taking care of children (Glennerster). Therefore,
When Christmas comes around, it’s time for all the different types of charities to come out. The Salvation Army is one of them; they are out everywhere looking for people to give money. When they are ringing the bell, people do not ask what does this support. They are instantly digging in their pockets, wallets, and purses to find loose change. When they find coins or dollar bills, they just put them in the red bucket and keep on walking. Why do people do this? People should research charities before giving because the money may not be spent on what the charity says, may not reach the people in need, or could just go to waste.
In Edith Wharton’s book Summer the main character Charity Royall is the daughter of the most influential man in town and yet she doesn’t want anything more than to escape from her small town of North Dormer and her lonely father figure that inhabits it. Mr. Royall took her down from the Mountain when she was a child and has raised her as his own since she was young, but after the death of his wife he has resorted to drinking to heal his loneliness, and later in his weakened state turns to Charity to cure his loneliness. Though his first proposal could be seen as “disgusting” and “incest” in that he tries to enter Charity’s room while he is drunk, when he later asks her to marry him for the third time, he is clear headed and believes this is the best option for Charity. At first Charity is disgusted by herself for giving in to Mr. Royall’s advances, after a silent agreement between her and Mr. Royall in which she realizes he has no intention of making her do anything she doesn’t want to do, she realizes that this is the best outcome for her and accepts her fate.
“The Sisters of Charity of Cincinnati is an apostolic Catholic community of women religious that exists to carry out the Gospel of Jesus Christ through service and prayer in the world” (qtd. in “About the Sisters of Charity”). The Sisters are led by their mission statement to be “[u]rged by the love of Christ and in the spirit of [their] founder, Elizabeth Ann Seton, [the] Sisters of Charity of Cincinnati strive to live Gospel values. [They] choose to act justly, to build loving relationships, to share [their] resources with those in need, and to care for all creation” (qtd. in “Mission Statement”). Through this mission, they dedicate themselves to “the education of children, care of orphans, the poor and the sick” (qtd. in “Sisters of Charity Cincinnati”). These values are exemplified in numerous ways but specifically have been shown with the creation of educational institutions, orphanages, and their selflessness during the civil war.
The next big thing, A Break With Charity, a book about the Salem witch trials is grabbing the attention of many young minds in search of a good book. The fascinating book starts off with 16 year old Susannah English who longs to receive the answer to when her brother will return to Salem Massachusetts from a supposed fortune teller Tituba. Tituba is a slave who works for Reverend Parris. A circle of girls has already been seeing her and Susanna wants to join in. The leader of the circle Ann Putnam has started a flood of accusations about being witches towards innocent people when Susanna English really knows the truth. In order to keep Susanna “in line” and to not rat out Ann Putnam, Ann threatens to accuse Susanna’s mom of witchcraft. This
At your request, the other members of the Ryerson Business Students Association committee and I, have researched and acquired information on three different charities around the area of the university to best identity which charity would be the most deserving of a donation. We have done this by collecting information from each organization and comparing them to see which charity best meets the set of criteria we have chosen.
My fourth grade class has participated in a service-learning project for the past eight years. Before the Christmas season, we read several books about giving, including a children’s version of “The Gift of the Magi”. Then we discuss how the money that parents send for the students’ Christmas five dollar gift exchange could be used for something else. The children vote whether or not they want to keep the normal gift exchange or donate the money to another cause (every year the students have chosen to donate their gift money to others). Then the students brainstorm organizations or ideas for the money. After the list is narrowed down to five ideas, the children are broken into groups and given one of the organizations to research, and then they write a persuasive report to present to the class. After the students have heard the persuasive reports, a final vote is taken to choose the organization. Next, the students are responsible for writing a letter home to their parents explaining why they have chosen to donate their gift exchange money to the charity or organization. We have sent care packages to overseas soldiers, bought goodie bags for nursing home patients, and sent money to Heifer
Overall, this paper is about how poverty is very prominent in our society, and we need to learn more about it. We need to increase aid to low- income families because they cannot support
Because this would be a charity event, there had to be a foundation or cause that all the profits would go to. It should be something that the people of Conant and surrounding areas could connect with and would be willing to donate to. If it is for a cause that the people believe in, more people would come to support the event, regardless if they are interested in the run itself or not. They would be willing to pay more for tickets if they knew that the money would be going to a cause that is near to their hearts. At first, the JDRF, Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation, seemed like a good place to donate to. This was because there are quite of few people at Conant who have juvenile diabetes and the annual JDRF walk would be the next day, so it could be a good way to join this event to the cause and promote the walk. But soon after learning about an eighth grade boy who goes to Mead Junior High has brain cancer, I wanted to help and thought that this was a good cause to support. The eighth grader, Alex, is from this area and would have been a student at Conant. There are many people in this area that would support this event because it is a part of the community and they would want to help out. There are two main charities that helped this cause. The Be Positive Foundation, helps kids with pediatric cancer and raises money to provide financial and emotional support to families of children with cancer. And at
Imagine yourself in a high school classroom when your teacher suddenly began to speak in unintelligible words and despite asking clarifying questions, you are still unable to understand the concept. This was a problem that I ran into when my Physics teacher spoke in whispers and I was sitting in the back and I could not hear what she was saying. Slowly, the gap between my knowledge and my classmates’ started to increase. After countless tutoring sessions with students who graduated high school, these sessions did not help me. I thought there should be a better way to solve this. This is why I created a non-profit called Onclass: a place where students can collaborate and create study guides and other people can edit and use these guides to
I grew up in a home where volunteering was a fact of life. My dad was a member of
John Winthrop wrote A Model of Christian Charity in 1630 aboard the Arabella. Winthrop was a firm believer in the Puritan faith and is known to have spoken this sermon on board the ship to help inspire passengers to go forth and create a “new society” focused on God “in a perilous environment” (Beardsley 1). Winthrop and his fellow Puritans were determined to establish a new society in America that was focused on doing justly, loving mercy, and walking humbly with God (9). In A Model of Christian Charity, Winthrop uses theological and biblical references to define justice as loving and respecting all those around you, despite any differences, and as living out actions God wants his people to do; this exemplifies Winthrop’s Puritan religious beliefs which focus on creating a close-knit society.
Nonprofit organizations have several functions, and not each one is alike. Essential to all non-profit organizations are four functions: planning, budgeting, funding and management.
In today’s world there are hundreds of thousands of non-profit organizations (NPOs) established at the local, regional, national and international level, and their influence is increasing. Non-profit organizations even considered the third sector of the economy (the first two is the public and private, or commercial). It is believed that they have a special role in development of civil society. In those countries, which have largely shaped the system of legislative regulation of the sector (USA, UK, Australia, etc); the state spends huge sums on research programs in the field of standardization of the NPO.
On the other hand another way of thinking about it is - just how bad
