Introduction
Nicolle, (2014), found that the Center for Disease Control in the United States shows that the Catheter Associated Urinary Tract Infection constitutes the most commonly acquired infections in US, (Saint, et al. 2016). An examination of an implemented CAUTI was conducted to establish a link between perceptions of risk by healthcare providers and the potential impact they have on patient care decisions, (Wahr, et at. 2013). The Michigan Health and Hospital Association Keystone Center of patient safety constituted the main patient schemes, (Pearson, Needleman, Beckman, & Han, 2016: Nicolle, et al. 2014). 2017; Krein, Kowalski, Harrod, Forman, & Saint, 2013), was chosen due to its specifications. Since the research was state wide, it allowed the authors to generate comparison on how risk is defined, perceived and its influence in different scenarios. For a qualitative focus by the article, Sequential method was used in the study and understanding of the initiative. In three phases, the authors selected 12 eligible hospitals (down from 103) to conduct telephone and in-person interviews (42 in total) accompanied by 3 site visits. By the use of open code and constant comparative technique, the coded interviews and the supporting data were able to be qualitatively analyzed by the authors. They were able to establish that for healthcare providers, the concept of risk played a crucial part in the decision-making process regarding to urinary catheter use.
To identify a framework to interpret the data collected, the authors conducted literature review and as a result, Dixon- Woods’s orientations to risk by staff framework was identified and by applying their codes to the framework, (Bennett, Dolin, & Blaser, 2014), it was established that the framework provided a means of relating risk and use of a device. Contradicting data enabled the authors to expand and build upon the risk framework to include other factors they found to have influenced perception and subsequent response to risk. From the analysis of the data using the framework, the findings
