Since the beginning of time, it’s been an intrinsic action in humans to protect others feelings and emotions. This act is sometimes done by deception. Although in the deceivers eyes, it may be seen as an act of love or protection, in the deceived’s eyes it 's sometimes viewed as pure, unregulated deception. As seen in The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night Time, Christopher has been deceived by his father, Ed. Through detection and stealth he has found out that his so called “dead mother” is not really dead, but instead in London with the husband of an neighbor. Among this, Christoper has also learned that his own father also killed Wellington, the dog of the neighbor whom ran off with Christopher 's mom. Christopher learned the …show more content…
The fact that Ed killed Wellington showed how passive aggressive he was. Christopher was terrified that if he ever found himself in a situation even remotely similar to his mother 's or angered his dad he would kill him also. The passive aggressive nature of his dad produced this fear. As seen in the text, Christopher likes equations, they calm him down and are essential to his daily life. In his life almost everything is an equation. So in his high-functioning mind, when his dad killed Wellington perhaps he made out an equation which was equal to killing him also. With his mother, Christopher never saw her do anything close to passive aggressive, so he had nothing to be scared over.
“Then I stopped reading the letter because I felt sick… Mother had not died of a heart attack. Mother had not died. Mother had been alive all the time. And father had lied about this (Haddon 112).” Another factor that contributed to the fear Christopher held towards his dad was the fact that in his relationship with his mother wasn’t broken. With his dad, Christopher got into fights and when he found out that his mother wasn 't really dead it shattered any trust he had in his father. His mother, on the other hand didn 't have a broken relationship with him. She may have left him, but in his mind lying to him
Over 11 million people were killed during the Holocaust, 1.1 million were children and 6 million were Jewish. Our human species is dated back to more than 200,000 years ago, now if we can attain a significant lesson that our ancestors have passed down to us, it would definitely be to keep learning and writing. Many past generations and societies have been destroyed by diseases, famine, and due to their lack of knowledge and their capability to reason. Considering the Egyptians were very intelligent, few of their inventions that we still use till this day are geometry, the pen, and papyrus, which is used as paper. But even so, they were wiped out by the thousands from diseases. However, humans have yet to reach their highest potential but by attaining knowledge through literature, one can endure lessons from the past without having to experience it.
Ed Boone has good intentions toward Christopher and only wishes the best for him, even though his actions and decisions are not always the best. He hid the letters, that Christopher’s mother sent Christopher. He also lied to Christopher about his mother, telling Christopher that she died of a heart attack. Even though the things Ed did look evil and bad hearted, he did it out of love. Just like he killed Wellington, Mrs. Shears dog, because he loved her and she rejected him, and Ed got out of control. Ed lied and hid the letters from Christopher because Christopher, being a person with special needs, did not feel sad and take the divorce and separation of his parents too deeply and harshly. Ed also did this so Christopher would not leave him, because Ed loves him a lot. After Ed found out that Christopher read the letters, he apologized and said, “I’m sorry, Christopher, I’m so, so sorry” [Page 114]. Ed even said and told Christopher it was for his safety and for good, that it was all for a good cause. Ed said,
Have you ever felt overwhelmed or frustrated because of a paper? Many people struggle with writing. In Late Nights, Last Rites, Thomas Osborne talks about his difficulty with writing. I agree with Osborne that it takes a lot of time and thought to write a paper. However, many other people find it natural and easy to write a paper on their first try.
One of the main themes throughout the book is the title of the book “Night”. There are references from Eliezer about night during the book, which are full of symbolism. The word “night” is used repeatedly, and Eliezer recounts every dusk, night and dawn through the entire book. For instance, Night could be a metaphor for the Holocaust—submerge the family and thousands of Jewish families in the darkness and misery of the concentration camps.
Judy left with Mr. Shears and this caused trouble to Ed, with not knowing what to do, he lied to Christopher. Christopher was lead to believe that his mother had a fatal heart attack and had died later in hospital. Ed was faced with a major decision to make and at the time lying was the only option furthermore seeing the idea that lying was necessary in that case. Christopher would have struggled to understand the concept of his mother leaving with Mr. Shears due to his condition. Later in the novel, Christopher discovers letters that his mother has sent him since she has been gone. Here we see the effect that a lie has on him; he began to feel sick and dizzy. Christopher curled up into a ball and started to have a bad stomach ache, the next thing he says he remembers was waking up and discovering that he had been sick all over him self. Christopher learns a lot from this lie. He goes on an adventure to find his mother as he is scared of his dad; this is because of the lie by omission Ed told. Ed killed Wellington and never admitted it. ‘I couldn’t trust him, even though he had said “Trust me,” because he had told a lie about a big thing’.
Ed Boone adores his son, and gives up a lot to take care of Christopher but, the reader may get a bad vibe off of Ed because sometimes he has a breakdown and erupts at Christopher. “Father replied …’why not?’ ”(49). When Ed yells and frightens, his son Chris, he is getting scared and is slowly losing his trust in his dad. When Ed realizes that his relationship with Chris would end in ruins if he finds out that he has killed the dog; he tells Christopher that they aren’t friends with Mrs. Shears anymore, so that he would leave the dogs’ murder alone sense there isn’t a reason to care. That’s his first mistake, he should have left Christopher alone to play detective because it is nearly impossible to trace the death of Wellington back to Ed.
In the novel, The Curious Incident Of The Dog In The Night-time by Mark Haddon, the elements of Character of Father, the Aha-Moment of Christopher and the Conflict develops the theme when in making an effort to heal a relationship, one must be truthful in order to show a sense of trust and value to the person. Firstly, the Character of Father helps us to understand a level of effort he puts in trying to fix his relationship with Christopher. Father says “ And, um… I’ve got you a present. To show you that I really mean what I say. And to say sorry (Hadden 219), the quotation gives us a perspective that Ed really care for his son and that the golden retriever symbolizes a peace offering between them. However, he also shows effort in the relationship
Christopher’s real change happens when Christopher finds a stack of letter’s his ‘supposedly dead’ mother - “Mother died 2 years ago.” - writes to him whilst finding the book he was writing. This happens because his father tells him not to mind other’s business - “Father said, ‘Just try and keep your nose out of other people’s business.’” - and in result of not following his dad’s orders gets his book taken away. During his ‘detective work’ Christopher finds out the real reason as to why Wellington’s owner’s husband left as he was one of Chris’s main suspects. He finds out that his mother was having an affair with him. So when Christopher goes to find the book he finds the stack of letters - “One other possibility was that Father had hidden my book somewhere in the house.” -. All this leads to his change because if it wasn’t for his realization that his mother was alive he would have stayed and nothing would have differed. It is what leads to Christopher wanting to find his mother, and on this journey he experiences new danger and he learns how to cope with the real world. I believe the finding of the letters is very important as it helps the readers to sympathize with Christopher it also makes you sad especially because he is autistic and cannot understand why his father would lie to him.
Cruelty and Emotional Death Within Night The Holocaust was a pivotal point in history that changed the way people thought and would remember forever. In the memoir Night by Elie Wiesel, a common recurring theme was emotional death, or the absence of feeling. This pairs with the acts of physical and emotional cruelty within the concentration camps that Elie and his father face. When dealt with inhumane, intensive, and cruel labor, one can expect someone to become numb to the blows.
Christopher’s dad says that Christopher’s mom died from a heart attack. Christopher though, instead of being speechless or crying, he tries to find out what heart attack she had, this means that his mom was not a big part of his life because he did not care enough to be sad. Later in the book Christopher finds out that his mom had an affair with Mr. Shears and they moved to London together, but Christopher says that it does not matter because it happened in the past and his mom was dead. This means that he did not realize that this could have happened recently and that his mom may still be alive. This is just one of those things that is just too much for Christopher to
Father has murdered Wellington. That meant that he could murder me…”(122). For the sake of his own safety, Christopher decides that he must go to London to find his mother. On this Journey, Christopher's strengths and weaknesses have been challenged, but in order for him to discover the truth he must overcome these obstacles. Early into his journey, Christopher finds himself lost, frightened and alone. Considering Christopher rarely steps outside of his own hometown, he must learn to put his social anxieties aside as he experiences the pressures of London’s busy streets. When doing so, Christopher goes outside of his comfort zone, he ends up asking many people for instructions, and uses his own knowledge in order to figure out where to go. Christopher even risks his own life in order to save Toby, his pet rat. When doing so, Christopher overcomes these obstacles as he discovers the truth and realizes that maybe he is not so different after all.
Richard E. Miller essay “The Dark Night of the Soul” to be an interesting way to think about reading and writing in today’s world. Richard uses the violence in the world to question if our educational system is relevant to keeping us safe and whether the power literature can be used to change the tragic event that happen around us every day.
At the beginning of the novel he says, “This book will not be funny. I cannot tell jokes because I cannot understand them.” Not only can Chris not tell jokes, but he also can’t determine or express human emotion. When his mother was in the hospital, he wanted to visit her because he liked the uniforms and machines in hospitals, not because she was sick. On the day she died, he noted in his journal his Scrabble score, and that he ate Spaghetti for dinner. This was rather disturbing to read; it was difficult not to be angry and disgusted with Chris for not mourning the loss of his mother. It is, however, essential to remember that he does not know any better, and couldn’t process his own feelings of sadness. I then felt sorry for Christopher; the severity of his disease was shown when he wasn’t even capable of feeling anything when his own mother died. Even though emotions can be tormenting, it is far worse to feel nothing than to feel pain.
The response that Christopher presents to his thoughts displays moral agency. Like any other child, many experience curiosity and inputs their actions that is the same for Christopher as he wants to investigate the dog's death, but his father has him promise not to. He believes that, "When someone gets murdered you have to find out who did it so that they can be punished" (Haddon 20). Christopher chooses to reason with his father's promise because he knows that it would be the right thing to do to search for the murderer. The way that Christopher reasons his promise are too literal and proves that not every kid can keep a promise; it is normal for one to find ways of making decisions. Before entering his father's room to find his book, he knows his dad would get angry if he messes with his stuff and resolves to placing things back to where they were as to not make him angry. He considers his actions as being wrong, but in the process finds letters from his mother and thought it appropriator to take a few because they were addressed for
