Life Orientation Line Dancing Portfolio

Section B:
Definition: a type of country and western dancing in which dancers line up in a row without partners and follow a choreographed pattern of steps to music.

History: Line dancing originated before Christ and it originated from another kind of dance called “Contra” dancing which was done in the New England states in the early 1800s. The “Contra” was set up in such a way that there would be two lines facing each other one line would be men and the other line would be woman. A couple would then step into the middle and do their own routine down the line and then the next couple would come forward and so on and so forth.

One of the strengths that I realized while dancing was that I have a good ear for hearing the beat of the music and find it easy to keep to the rhythm of the dance. I also found it easy to remember the steps and the order of the steps. I struggled with the technicalities of certain steps. In the beginning I also struggled with the enthusiasm that was needed in the dance due to a lack of confidence but this enthusiasm increased as my confidence with the dance increased. I enjoyed learning choreography and dancing in time to the music but I did not enjoy how some people were singled out and forced to dance in front of the entire class. Line dancing was very beneficial not only physically but it also teaches a lot of life lessons that cannot be learned anywhere else such as discipline and to respect and appreciate women. I would participate in further line dancing activities because it is a good opportunity to get to know new people and become involved in new thing and learn new skills. Line dancing can improve confidence and self-esteem so I would therefore do it again if I was struggling with these things. I personally highly enjoyed going to the line dancing lessons as it was a way for me to escape from the busy life of a matric student. It gave me a chance to forget about all other work and subjects and allowed me to express myself in such a way that it relieved stress from my everyday
