Section B:
Definition: a type of country and western dancing in which dancers line up in a row without partners and follow a choreographed pattern of steps to music.
History: Line dancing originated before Christ and it originated from another kind of dance called “Contra” dancing which was done in the New England states in the early 1800s. The “Contra” was set up in such a way that there would be two lines facing each other one line would be men and the other line would be woman. A couple would then step into the middle and do their own routine down the line and then the next couple would come forward and so on and so forth.

One of the strengths that I realized while dancing was that I have a good ear for hearing the beat of the music and find it easy to keep to the rhythm of the dance. I also found it easy to remember the steps and the order of the steps. I struggled with the technicalities of certain steps. In the beginning I also struggled with the enthusiasm that was needed in the dance due to a lack of confidence but this enthusiasm increased as my confidence with the dance increased. I enjoyed learning choreography and dancing in time to the music but I did not enjoy how some people were singled out and forced to dance in front of the entire class. Line dancing was very beneficial not only physically but it also teaches a lot of life lessons that cannot be learned anywhere else such as discipline and to respect and appreciate women. I would participate in further line dancing activities because it is a good opportunity to get to know new people and become involved in new thing and learn new skills. Line dancing can improve confidence and self-esteem so I would therefore do it again if I was struggling with these things. I personally highly enjoyed going to the line dancing lessons as it was a way for me to escape from the busy life of a matric student. It gave me a chance to forget about all other work and subjects and allowed me to express myself in such a way that it relieved stress from my everyday
Irish step dancing has existed since the 1700’s, over 300 years. Families in Ireland have passed down Irish step dance from generation to generation as a way of preserving their culture. While the meaning of the dance remains the same, the performance and showmanship has changed dramatically. From girls and boys with pale skin and natural hair to girls with fake tanned skin, huge curly wigs, and thousand dollar dresses and boys with fake tanned skin and outlandish outfits. Irish dance has become more of a spectacle—such as “Riverdance” and “Lord of the Dance.” Those dances are some of the most enjoyable and respected around the world. Over time this type of dance has taken on a life of its own and changed
I feel that to live the life of a dancer the vital thing to have determination to battle many of the obstacles they will be facing, as it is clear that dance is in a low ranked compared to other art forms as “a professional dancer falls into the category of a highly skilled, sought after employee in a high risk profession” but yet is still not paid as much as an actor who has a stunt double to perform any parts deemed dangerous .Despite these setbacks a dancer should always remember why they got into dance in the first place and let that be their momentum to push them further in their
Dance is not only a form of art or a physical activity, but a means of expressing yourself. Through dance, I gained confidence, courage, patience, and other valuable qualities, now all fused into my identity. I have danced for the past 10 years, consistently training every week, persevering through the
Coupling dance is two people dancing face to face, close together, looking each other in the eyes. A good example of coupling dance is the Rock and Roll dance. Rock and Roll dance was developed around the 1920. Rock and Roll dance was modified to suit faster music. The dance was performed without undue tension, the body and legs being flexible, so that there may be a physical rhythmic expression of co-ordination with the beats of the music. The culture in which the larger groups more important than the nuclear family is the Polynesian group. Knowing that a nuclear family consist of a mother a father and child. The Polynesian group do everything together as a group. This value demonstrated because they dance together. If
a) Many ask, “How can dance be a sport? You can't judge on time and the scoring is subjective!” Just like figure skaters, competitive dancers are judged on many criteria: technique, posture, timing, line, hold, poise, togetherness, expression, presentation, power, and foot or leg action. Dancers have a lot on their minds while performing. They are constantly asking themselves, am I extending correctly? Is my technique right? Is my head facing the right direction?
There were many kinds of dances. There were also two different categories of dances (Court and Country dances). Court dances were formal dances performed by well trained dancers. Country dances were dances that anyone could participate in. Each individual dance was used for a different occasion. Usually the first dance of the night was the Pavane which was a slow, walking dance and was usually used to show off gowns or clothing. The Saltarello,
I was a dancer for fourteen years, beginning at the age of four and ending at the age of 18. I participated in basically every type of dance including ballet, tap, jazz, hip hop, modern, lyrical, and contemporary. Each year, I would participate in more classes than the last, and it eventually got to the point where I would be attending dance classes five or six days of my week. It definitely got tiring, but I still loved it. Dance is a great way to be able to portray emotions through movement, and I think that is very unique and special to participate in. It was a very huge part of my life, and so were the people teaching me. Dance and everything that came with it was a huge influence on my life, and it helped shaped me into the person I am today.
“It was once believed that the name came from the stomping down of the terrain; however, legend tells that the dance was created by a handicapped Northern Plains boy who wished to dance” (Legendsofamerica.com,
Dancing has never been a huge learning experience for me and I never saw the potential influences it would have on my life. Believing that teamwork or leadership meant nothing when it came to dance, Only it could have just been my ignorance as well never actually spending time to develop myself in this art. Until I reached high school where I joined dance class and started to become more

In the Merriam-Webster Dictionary, to dance means “to move your body in a way that goes with the rhythm and style of music that is being played”, (Simple Definition of dance). Many people can do the action of dancing but very few individuals are born with the talent that is required to fulfill a professional dance career. Individuals born with a natural talent and receive the training needed have a variety of occupations that they can acquire.
The purpose of this Line Dancing project is to organise an activity for the teenage boys and girls of the Cape Flats where they can meet at the school hall every Saturday and be taught line dancing by professional dancers from the local dance studio. This is a good project to fund and will benefit them as it is a new skill they can learn and participate in and it also promotes teamwork. I was taught line dancing in high school and it is skill I will never forget and be able to use at events for the rest of my life. The youth might enjoy learning line dancing as many of them I am sure are fans of the TV show ‘Dancing with the Stars’.
Tap dance is a form of dance, which is by tapping your shoes and hitting the
A series of set of movements to music, either alone or with a partner. That is the definition of dancing. Dancing is a way to express one's feeling and to get active.
Line Dancing is an activity that I recommend and encourage the youth to get involved with. Line dancing is a dance done to country music by a line of people (dancers) without partners, following a choreographed pattern of steps.
