In the story “The Most Dangerous Game” by Richard Connell and the poem “Porphyria’s Lover” by Robert Browning, the authors use characterization and imagery to convey that the desire for power can drive man to psychotic actions.
In Richard Connell’s short story “The Most Dangerous Game”, the protagonist character, Sander Rainsford is an adventurous and fearless big game hunter. Rainsford has no remorse for his prey. Over the course of the story Rainsford experiences a sudden change of heart when he finds himself where “The world is made up of two classes—the hunters and the huntees.”
One of the famous short stories that Richard Edward Connell wrote remains “The Most Dangerous Game”; it was published in 1925. His short story had become popular in 1932, they made a movie called The Most Dangerous Game and The Hounds of Zaroff. Connells nature of violence, cruelty, and the ethics of hunting for sport supported his writing style and made his writing extraordinary (“Dangerous game”). Analyzing “The Most Dangerous Game” displays a hunt that is between two men, every twist and turn through a gruesome tale.
Very rarely is a film like A Time To Kill (1996) made, containing such extremely profound and overt discussions on race relations, especially when you consider it within the context of the decade it was made. However, its themes of morality and race, although heavy, are palatable because the main characters are likable and complex, and the audience feels very connected to the mission they are pursuing. The movie has a runtime of about two and a half hours, and although lengthy, the audience stays riveted through its entirety in suspense of what the verdict of Carl Lee’s trial will be. I felt connected to Carl Lee and his family and I hurt for them because of their immense struggle, and I found myself empathizing and engaging my morals much more with this film in comparison to most other movies. Morality plays an interesting role throughout the film, with the question arising:
The United Kingdom born writer Kristy Mckay was inspired by many things to write “The Assassin Game”. Kristy Mckay was inspired by others writing involving a same situation in their novel, but she just wasn't receiving the excitement and suspense in their writing. Mckay proceeded to then write her own novel that she knew she would be able to incorporate her own twist and style. Mckay knew of others books alike to the boarding school scenario but, choose the proceed with her idea in hopes of creating a better sequence of events during the book.
Resourcefulness is being able to overcome difficulties quickly and in a clever way. Resourcefulness can also be using one’s surroundings for his/her benefit with prior knowledge and experience. In Richard Connell’s short story “The Most Dangerous Game” the main character Rainsford shows these skills of resourcefulness as he tries to survive the hunt. Rainsford is an experienced big game hunter that is trapped on a tropical jungle covered island with another big game hunter, General Zaroff. Zaroff has gained so much experience in hunting, due to this he has lost interest in hunting animals and now enjoys the hunt of humans. Rainsford is put in the position to be torched or participate in a game of hunting. When Rainsford is challenged to this game of hunting he is forced to try and survive. Rainsford is able to survive the hunt because he uses his resources and prior knowledge to weaken Zaroff helping him win the hunt.
One of the darker actions examined in this unit takes place in "The Most Dangerous Game" by Richard Connell. In this short story, General Zaroff begins hunting a man lost on his island named Rainsford. Bored of the usual game, General Zaroff decides he wants something more exciting and chooses to prey on humans. This ill-judged decision has a domino effect on the plot, ultimately ending in the demise of Zaroff. Nonetheless, an alternate ending besides death could have very well been a possibility. Perhaps, instead of hunting humans, Zaroff decides to open a hunting camp to share his passion for the sport with others. Obviously, his boredom is caused by the island's isolation from society. So, Zaroff could have built homes and started a community or decide to leave the island altogether. Then, the course of this story would have taken a completely different path. Maybe, Zaroff finds a wife, they have children and live happily ever after. If only he was able to overcome his dark side instead of letting it consume him.
A Review and Commentary On:A Time to Kill By John GrishamA Time to Kill written by John Grisham is a book that presents the high racial tensions in Canton Mississippi in the early 1990 's. The book opens with two young men, James Lewis Willard and Billy Ray Cobb, joy riding in their brand new yellow pick up truck decked out with Confederate flags. They speed though black neighborhoods throwing full beer bottles at people and houses, until they come across ten-year-old Tonya Hailey walking home from the grocery store. The men pull over, trap her, rape her repeatedly, beat her, hang her, throw her off a bridge and leave her for dead. Her siblings find Tonya later that day, barely alive, her father, Carl Lee Hailey., and the black community
Overcoming all odds in the movie A Time to Kill, Carl Lee Hailey, a black man in a racist south during the civil rights era, was acquitted of two murders. At his trial, the jury was composed of all white people. He had a ten year-old daughter, Tonya, who was raped, beaten, and left for dead by two white men. While at the courthouse on trial for the rape, the two men were gunned down by Carl Lee. Carl Lee’s attorney, Jake Brigance, argued that Carl Lee was legally insane and therefor should be acquitted. Although Carl Lee was acquitted, I believe that he did not receive a fair trial.
The story "The Most Dangerous Game" and the movie "High Noon" both are stories based off of isolation. The role of Will Kane is played by the breathtaking actor Gary Cooper. Will Kane is the marshal for the town of Hadleyville. Will plans to leave town with his wife, Amy but plans soon change after he learns Frank Miller is coming back to get revenge. In the story "The Most Dangerous Game" the main character of the story Sanger Rainsford falls off of his boat where he winds up on Ship Trap Island. On Ship Trap Island Sanger runs into General Zaroff. General Zaroff lives on the island where he hunts people. After having a disagreement with General Zaroff Sanger has to play a game in order to stay alive. In these two stories you will see with difference comes similarities.
In the passage “Into the Death Zone” by Sean McCollum Jordan attempted to climb Mt. Everest and succeded but his father was not into the idea of her going. Jordan’s father told her that it was a dangerous idea to climb Mt. Everest because many people did not survive. There were 11,000 who attempted the climb, 220 people died, 4,500 summits, and 150 corpses still on the mountain. Mt. Everest is 29,034 feet high. Jordan only being 13 year old attempted after convincing her father being one of the youngest to do it. But what if she did not make it or became seriously injured. Her father would be extremely disappointed in her and he could do nothing but to let it go. Her father warned her and she would probably stop climbing because of her father’s
High Noon and The Most Dangerous Game are both completely opposite stories but, they also have many similarities. Imagine if you were in a situation where you had to fight someone with no help. Nobody would be able to help you and the place you were at would make you isolated. You are the good guy and the bad guy is trying to kill you just like in movies you see during your childhood. So, what would you do? This is the main thing that is happening in these amazing stories but they have a little twist. In this passage you will get to explore the differences and similarities of two stories that are very thrilling and adventurous. In High Noon, the time is ticking till your enemy and his friends
Would a person be justified in killing a human being that has hunted and killed many other people? The short story, “The Most Dangerous Game” by Richard Connell, helps to argue that the killing of human hunter can be overlooked. This short story is about a guy, named Rainsford, that gets stranded in the sea without his ship and makes his way to a nearby island in search of help. In the process of exploring the island, he stumbles across a mansion and while inside he meets General Zaroff who has found a new game to hunt for sport, humans. After three days of forcibly being General Zaroff’s prey, Rainsford ends up becoming the first to have beaten Zaroff. In the end, Rainsford took his opportunity to kill General Zaroff. Rainsford was acquitted

In A Time To Kill, by John Grisham, two drunken white men violently raped, beat, and nearly killed a 10-year-old black girl named Tonya Hailey. Her father, in a clouded rage, executed the two rapists with an M-16 on their way out of the courthouse. His vigilante form of justice was not well taken by many in prejudiced Ford County, Mississippi. On the other hand, he had lots of support from the black community and from any white person whom dared to step into his shoes. A young, thirty-something lawyer named Jack Brigance was hired as his defense. He personally hoped it would give him national recognition, but his outlook turned sour when an all-white jury was drawn to decide on the fate of this Negro man. As
