Sigmund Freud’s theory of the id, ego, and superhero can clearly be seen represented in many fictional stories. However, Freud’s theory is meant to be applicable in real life. I found it interesting to see how his theory is apparent in a book based on real people and real events. In the book American Sniper by Chris Kyle, these ideas are in fact shown throughout Chris’s life. The first part of Freud’s theory, the id, is represented through a young Chris Kyle. Prior to enlisting in the Navy, young Chris is immature, impulsive, and does some rather dangerous things. For example, he favorite thing to do is ride bulls. This type of behavior goes in line with the id characteristics. The id is the primitive and instinctive components of someone's personality. Chris’s behaviors are very instinctive. He also neglects to make a real plan for himself and the direction that he wishes to go in his life as he says in the story. Chris is also fun loving and adventure seeking similar to how most kids are. His experience at rodeos serve as an example of this and how his …show more content…
This is the very first development of his ego as he finally begins to take responsibility for himself and begins to develop a plan as to who he wishes to become in life. This behavior significantly represents an individual who is undergoing change and transitioning into someone whose behavior suggests an influence from the ego component which Freud developed. Chris’s behavior continues to represent the ego even up until he is with the SEAL teams for some time. He is still fun loving and somewhat reckless, however, he has begun to mature due to his harsh training and the people he is around in the military. Therefore, Chris appears to be acting mostly on the ego idea. He compromises between the id by still enjoying himself, but and also seems to have matured after some things that he has seen and endured in the
The Sniper, written by Liam O’Flaherty, is a story about a Republican sniper in the Irish civil war in 1922. This story tells of a night spent on a roof looking for the enemy, the Free-Staters. In this short description of the nights events, the sniper kills 3 people; a soldier, an informer, and finally an enemy sniper on the roof across the road from him. In the end this enemy sniper turns out to be the republicans brother. This story shows the the specific characteristics a sniper must have to carry out their duty. A key moment in this text which influenced the sniper is the Civil war itself.
The unconscious contains the instincts, those driving force for all human behavior. In Freud’s later writing he revised the conscious- unconscious distinction and came up with the id, ego and superego. The id is the unconscious, the least accessible part of the personality. The id includes the sex and aggressive instincts. Freud wrote, “We call it…a cauldron full of seething excitations. [The id] knows no judgments of value, no good and evil, no morality” (Freud, 1933, p 74). The id seeks immediate satisfaction without regard for the circumstances of reality. The id operates under the pleasure-seeking principal. For example, a newborn’s mind consists only of the id, which is responsible for the satisfaction of physical desires. The id, represents a human being’s most primitive desires, and a person ruled only by the id would do everything strictly for his or her own pleasure, breaking societal norms in the process and risking punishment. (SparkNotes, 2007)
Freud strategized that the personality was composed of three elements; the id, ego, and superego. The id is the component of personality that is present from birth, and is exclusively unconscious. “According to Freud, the id is the source of all psychic energy, making it the primary component of personality” (Cherry,1). On the other hand, the ego is the element of the personality that is responsible with reality. “According to Freud, the ego develops from the id and ensures that the impulses of the id can be expressed in a manner acceptable in the real world” (Cherry, 1). It

One major portion of Sigmund Freud’s perspective on psychology involves the personality structure of the id, ego, and
Freud’s structural and topographical model of personality, revolves around the id, ego and superego (McLeod, 2008). As a newborn, I was born with my id which allowed me to get my basic needs met. As an infant, I would cry if I was hungry or tired or just wanted to be held, I did not think of anyone else. The second part of my personality started around when I was three years old, and according to Freud this is when I began to develop my ego. An example of this would be if I was hungry I would want to satisfy my id, but at the
Freud described humans as having three essential components that built personality. The three components were the id, the ego, and the superego. He described the id, as being what governed an infant’s drive to overcome their primitive biological desires. According to his theory infants had no other goal than to release the tension that built up when their
Freud developed the psychoanalytic theory of personality development, which argued that personality is formed through internal conflicts among three fundamental structures of the human mind: the id, ego, and superego. According to this model of the psyche, the id is the set of uncoordinated trends; the super-ego plays the critical and moralizing role; and the ego is the organized, realistic part that mediates between the desires of the id and the super-ego (Wikipedia, 2017).
In 1923, Sigmund Freud proposed his theory that the make-up of an individual’s personality is largely governed by three fundamental components: the id, the ego, and the superego. Working through the unconscious and shaping behavior according to psychological fixations and conflicts or lack thereof, these elements evolve through five levels of psychosexual development (Freud, 1962). However, in spite of its compelling approach to the phenomenon, Freud’s structural theory of personality is riddled with limitations and as such, is subject to much criticism.
As Freud dug deeper into people’s personality he came up with three important systems call the id, the ego, and the superego. The three systems collaborate with one another in order for the individual to effectively transition through his environment in satisfactory ways. These systems are very important for man, that is impart because it helps man fulfill their necessities and desires. In the other hand, when the three systems are not working together the person might be struggling and are unstable with their personality. This can lead to a very damaging situation for that individual because they are not content with themselves or the world around them, it can also intervene with how they perceive and do things effectively. The main purpose and function of the id or as Freud called it
Part of Freud’s theory was that the Id, Ego and Super Ego were in constant conflict with each other. It involves the Id wanting immediate satisfaction and the super ego who wants the id/person to behave leaving the ego constantly trying to resolve the issue.
Freud felt that the transformation within a person’s personality was dynamic. Freud broke the personality down into three parts which consisted of the id, ego, and superego. These three components join together as one to make up a person’s behavior. Of the three, the id is the only component that is seen at birth. The id aspect of the personality involves the basic behaviors and instincts. It is seen completely in the unconscious. Freud considered the id the primary trait of personality (Sergist, 2009). Early in life, the id is a very important component that an infant must have. This is important
