Italian American Culture Points to watch out for in the Italian American culture are as follows. Counselors must establish trust, through recommendations, honesty, and genuine interest in the client. Then the counselors must draw boundaries because Italians are likely to draw the counselors into their family lives. Be aware that Italians are loud and outspoken people. And, realize that when they are arguing amongst themselves or you, they are just animatedly discussing their argument. Also, Italians care very much about their emotional and physical well-being; and tend to talk or complain about them. The older ones tend to believe in destiny, so the counselor needs to teach them new psychological tools to empower them to change their
Documentaries are a form of realistic cinema that is often used to deliver emotional messages based upon the elements of truth and genuineness as opposed to beauty through manipulation. Italianamerican, a traditional film directed by Martin Scorsese, aims to depict the lives of his parents as they grew up in their neighborhood on Elizabeth Street through a series of questions answered by Catherine and Charlie Scorsese themselves. From these personal recounts, sociological and ethnological issues such as the struggles of Italian immigration and assimilation to American soil along with the similarities and differences between second-generation Italian-Americans and their immigrant parents are gradually revealed. The discussed traditions and customs
Although we all are living on the same planet we have a huge diversity among us. One of these notable differences between the people on earth is their different cultures. One can notice these differences when traveling or relocating to a new country with another culture he or she are familiar with. For example, the American culture and the Italian culture both have more differences than one would expect. When people try to visit Italy they should be aware of the cultural differences, and the right way to communicate with the Italians.
I am an Italian-American, two very distinct cultures that have shaped me throughout my entire life. My father is a full-blooded Italian and my mother is American. They met when my mother moved to Italy for business and about 13 years later I was born and 2 years after me, my brother. We all moved to California in 2001, when I was almost 4 years old, because my mother is from California.
Contemporary American culture is defined as common themes of political attitudes, religious beliefs and news events that lead trends during the present time. Today, we see contemporary American culture portrayed in many more ways than that. We see it through art, music, and literature. In literature, for example, The Ones Who Walk Away from Omelas by Ursula Le Guin, contemporary American culture is portrayed throughout. The Ones Who Walk Away from Omelas represents contemporary American culture by portraying the exploitation of others, the symbolism of Americas political systems and oppression of the lower classes, and the lacking of moral responsibility.
American culture encompasses customs or traditions in the United States. Customs or traditions include, but would not be limited to, values, language, religion, or how we communicate. The population in the United States is over 325 million, (United States Census Bureau, (n.d.) and is built on immigration. In comparison to other countries, the United States is considered cultural, as most nations unite, and later mix, their culture into American culture.
Italians take great pride in social interactions. Humor, agreeability, reliability, and success in business and in social life are valued over assertiveness, and health, family, serenity, and financial security are the highest valued attributes to Italians.
I saw that you replied to my post about Greek Americans. It's funny because I actually almost wrote about Italian Americans. I find that there are a few cultural parallels between the Italian Americans and the Greek Americans. When it came to religion, the Greek Americans were also discriminated against. However, religious discrimination is not entirely a new or old concept. It's hard to forget that Jewish people were also heavily discriminated against for their religious beliefs. In current events it seems that Islam remains a religion that is discriminated against.
One of the most common themes in Fr. Deck’s works is the importance of culture in regards to religion; he talks specifically Hispanic-American culture but does not shirk the importance of other cultures. For example, at the National Symposium on Adolescent Catechesis Deck espoused the importance of culture in regards to the evangelization of Hispanic Adolescents. He drew attention to the lack of any specialized attention towards Hispanic culture as a whole despite the fact that the church has constantly noted the importance of the evangelization of Hispanic youth. Deck goes on to argue that the Catholic Church is experiencing issues with evangelizing because their methods have become sterile and ineffective due them never changing. Fr. Deck
Today, Italian American is the fifth largest ethnic group in America. A huge amount of Italian population migrated to America between the late nineteenth century and World War I. Between 1900-1915, 3 million Italians immigrated to America, which was the largest nationality of “New Immigrants” (Cohen, 1986). “New Immigrants” consisted of Slavs(Slaves), Jews, and Italians. The “New Immigration” is the third and largest wave of immigration from Europe, and Italians were categorized as one of the “New Immigrants”. From 1890 onward, the number of Italian immigrants increased rapidly throughout the nation. From 1880-1924, more than 4 million Italians immigrated to America (Will, n.d.). These immigrants, mainly artisans and peasants, represented all regions of Italy, but most of them came from the Southern Italy.
With Italians traveling to America to find a new world to explore and evolve in, they found some interesting changes, and stereotypes that ended up transforming how they acted and dealt with Americans. Italian American culture was a transition of hardships, to learning that the American standard was not as strict as it was in Italy. “Most of the men in our room worked at digging the sewer. Bartolo got them the work and they paid him one quarter of their wages. Then he charged them for board… (36 Black Boot Barn). This quote demonstrates to us, that people took advantage of the newer Italian immigrants setting them not only a job, but shelter as well. While they were trying to find a step to settle on, they had people who have been residents for a while use these people, until they stood up and became more independent. There are examples of when something good was taught to Italians, and they realized that America was not as uptight in accepting abuse. In Rosa’s journey of working in America she broke a lamp and started breaking down in tears, but then a lady said, “But Rosa,” they said, “you did a good thing! That lamp was terrible! Somebody gave it to us so we had to keep it” (Rosa 221). This demonstrates that, sometimes, breaking something or messing up was alright, because it was a natural error that was accepted instead of a death penalty. In the school system, stereotypes took a role in younger Italian children and what they were good at. The main character in Mount
Sicily is the large island situated in Southern Italy that has been conquered by many different populations in its long history. Although that, this paper will focus on the ways in which Arab-Norman dominations of the medieval period have left a profound legacy, affecting culture and identity of the contemporary Sicilian society. From dialectic words to agriculture and fishing practices, to the architectural monuments of Palermo and Catania, the island of Sicily appears submerged of Arab-Norman elements. This legacy, as I will show, shapes the culture and the identity of contemporary Sicilian society.
Exposure of the indigenous people of North America to Euro-American cultures reflects within Native American art. Euro-Americans here being used as term for Europeans and their descendants who emigrated to North America. From the point Europeans traveled in large numbers to America they caused severe changes in the peoples who lived in North America. Due to the trade with Europe and the crops they brought to North America, indigenous peoples were able to expand the materials they used for their art. Forced integration, migration, and fighting with Euro-Americans created changes within the stories represented in their visual culture. Examples of changes caused by trade can be seen in a Potawatomi bag from
Have you ever wondered how the Italian educational system compares to that of America? Well a lot of Italians would tell you in fact, they despise it. The schooling is not the most reliable, especially when it comes to how people are hired and the rampant instability of education jobs in the country. Another fact is that Italy still offers some of the most complete didactic curricula in Europe.
One culture that interests me is the Italian culture. This culture interests me due to part of my paternal heritage coming from Italian descent. I would love to be able to visit Italy one day to experience the Italian culture. Based on some of the research that I have done, there are many ways the Italian culture can enrich one's life, deepen their business expertise, and improve one's communication skills. Italy is among the seven most industrialized nations in the world, and its economy is among the broadest in the world encompassing almost every type of industry. Building close relationships are very important in Italian business culture, so it is important to ensure that one's Italian counterparts like and trust them. During introductions
American culture refers to the traditions and practices of the people of the United States. Culture comprises of the nature of buildings, religion, music language and marriage. The population of the United States is more than 320 million people making it the most culturally diverse country in the globe. Books such as Crabgrass Frontier, Manifest Destination and Muscular Christianity are important sources of information about American culture. This paper is a reflection on the methods that these books use in providing information about the evolution of the US culture. The paper examines the relationship between these three sources and ways they challenge or inform an understanding of the American society during the late 19th and early 20th century. There is an analysis of the efficiency of the issues tackled by these books in influencing the contemporary discourse surrounding American culture. The major argument of this paper is that Crabgrass Frontier, Manifest Destination and Muscular Christianity provide reliable information about the evolution of the US culture and they supplement each other through the use of relevant examples.
