One culture that interests me is the Italian culture. This culture interests me due to part of my paternal heritage coming from Italian descent. I would love to be able to visit Italy one day to experience the Italian culture. Based on some of the research that I have done, there are many ways the Italian culture can enrich one's life, deepen their business expertise, and improve one's communication skills. Italy is among the seven most industrialized nations in the world, and its economy is among the broadest in the world encompassing almost every type of industry. Building close relationships are very important in Italian business culture, so it is important to ensure that one's Italian counterparts like and trust them. During introductions
Life in Italy in the 1930’s caused difficulty to some Italians during that time period. During the 1930’s a large number of Italians who had opposed the fascist rule of Benito Mussolini arrived in the United States. After the news spread in Italy about the bombing of Pearl Harbour almost all Italians supported the war against Benito Mussolini. At this point, Italy was slowly becoming under the Nazi rule, the significance of a woman’s role in Italy was emphasised as they were expected to accept the fascist ideology. Girls were expected to get married and conceive lots of children. Many young women in Italy felt the pressures of politics that were dominated by men and felt that women’s rights were disappearing
Italian immigrants were not welcomed with open arms into the land of opportunity. They had to adapt to the new lifestyle without forgetting theirs. Throughout the years, American citizens would be accustomed to having foreigners living in their neighborhoods. The Italian immigrants established communities where they managed to keep la via vecchia alive.
In the late 1800s, millions upon millions of Europeans made their way to America for a variety of reasons. For the citizens of Italy, those reasons included poverty and political hardship. For many Italians, farming was their livelihood, however the antiquity of their tools did not allow for maximum efficiency. As a result, approximately 5 million poor Italian farmers made the trip across the Atlantic to America. While most settled in New York and the surrounding states, some journeyed elsewhere to states like Ohio, Missouri, and Illinois. Once they arrived, they would take the vacant positions of workers on strike making up to ten times the salary they would have made in their homeland.
Around 1830 larger numbers of immigrants began coming to the US. At first there weren’t lots of people coming each year. Soon, as outside countries began to take on hardships, people began to immigrate in higher numbers than before. When a mass amounts of immigrants started to get noticed was around 1850, when the Chinese Immigration Economic Opportunity was big (Doc. 1). Later numbers began to rise and fall.
Also during this time, Italian labourers that arrived in Australia worked in the cane fields
In the late 18th century, European migrants such as Germans, Polish, and Italians came to America to start a better life, little did they know that coming to a new country such as America wouldn't be the easiest. Many Germans, Polish, and Italian immigrants began searching for a new life in America in the late 1800’s. As easy as they thought is was going to be, many immigrants had a tenacious time being part of America. They needed to leave the country that they knew and their loved ones, hoping their lives would improve after arriving in the United States. German immigrants moved to America because of poverty, conversely being so indigent that they couldn't provide for themselves. They also came to America to provide for their families whom they brought along. Polish immigrants came to earn more money then the earned in Poland. Italian immigrants came to America to escape the wars that were happening as well as pursuing a better economic opportunity. Immigration to America was a time where European immigrants wanted to start a new life with their families.
Today New York City is home to over 3 million Italian Americans. When the Italian immigrants first came to America many settled in downtown Manhattan, in an area that came to be known as Little Italy. Living conditions in Little Italy were terrible. Large families were forced to live in tiny tenement apartments with sometimes up to five or six family members sharing a tiny bedroom. When the immigrants were able to save up enough money many moved their families to Staten Island where it was more rural and land was relatively inexpensive. Phyllis Lamattina, a longtime resident of the Roosebank area, has the knowledge of the Italian immigrants’ relationship to St. Joseph by Rosebank Church and how important the values of family was to the immigrants. In this interview. Ms. Lamattina, shares a brief oral history of her family and tells of this importance of family and church to the Italian immigrants.
Therefore, between the early 1950s and the mid-1960s, around 20,000-30,000 Italians immigrated to Canada each year. Over 75 percent of Italian immigrants to Canada came from Italy’s rural south; especially from the regions of Calabria, Abruzzi, Molise and Sicily in which three-quarters of these immigrants were small-scale farmers or peasants. Many Italians came to Canada on government-sponsored one-year contracts to work in industries with labor shortages, however, the majority of Italian immigrants during this period arrived through the process of chain-migration in which family members already in Canada sponsored their relatives from abroad. In fact, more than ninety percent of Italians that entered Canada between 1946 and 1967 were sponsored
When people are stuck to one certain lifestyle and one idea, there is not change. Sometimes there needs to be risks taken. The earth consists of a variety of different experiences, and when people are limited to one, there will be no growth. Exploration is reaching out to discover unfamiliar and foreign concepts and ideas which can either be disregarded or learned through encounter. True exchange with these alien subjects is difficult since there has to be something that is given up, but there cannot be growth or wisdom gained without something lost. That growth or wisdom can thus influence the future generations to strive to become better.
Labelled as enemy aliens due to Canada’s loyalties in the Second World War, Italian Canadians are amid some of the primitive Europeans to have visited and settled in Canada. In this paper, I will uncover the history of immigration of Italians to Canada through examining three large mass immigration periods; 1870-1914, 1920-1930, and 1950-1970. In addition, I will touch upon the diverse social, political, and economic reasons for these record number mass immigrations. The paper will also examine the hardships and challenges new semi-skilled Italian immigrants faced when they entered the new country such as language barriers and job opportunities. As well, the paper will dive into important Canadian legislation that greatly affected immigration
Italians immigrated to the United States for many reasons. That could include being refugees, gaining freedom, because of war, later on the great depression, ect. That all contributes in the beginning of the 1800’s where the immigrants came by boat and was welcomed to the U.S. in Ellis Island. Overall it is who made their journey here, where part of Italy are they coming from.
