The film Le Fabuleux Destin d'Amélie Poulain, more commonly known as Amélie, was released in 2001 and became an instant success internationally. It portrays a unique style of film and is visually different but exceptional. Directed by Jean-Pierre Jeunet, Amélie contains many amazing characteristics that made it into a hit. The plot, color scheme/special effects, particular camera movements and jump-cut editing make the film enjoyable and interesting. Amélie seems to relate more to the French public but many people from other nations found it quite good. It was shown all throughout commercial theaters and became a box office success. One could say due to the film's romance aspect and female lead; the target audience ideally would be women in the age range of 18-25. These young audiences are a result of the French trend, cinéma du look, in which youth-oriented films were produced with high production values and flashy visual style. This trend was only one of many during the 1980s and forward that changed the French film industry. With such innovations, Amélie was able to capture the attention of viewers and bring them into an idiosyncratic and fantastical world.

As the film progresses, the 1980’s cultural construction of young women begins to appear and as Claire comes forward with her sensitivity, stresses, and struggles she begins to rebel against the rules of detention by smoking marijuana in the school library and by kissing the “bad boy” that is serving detention with her. Within the film, Ma Vie en Rose (Alain Berliner, France, 1997) we are encouraged to sympathize with the main character, Ludovic (Georges Du Fresne), a seven year old boy that insists that he is actually a girl. The importance of viewing this movie and being able to identify with the character of Ludovic shows us as an audience the absurdity of gender norms, while simultaneously encouraging us to have a more empathetic viewpoint in regards to such topics.

Throughout the film, the writer mentions her unborn daughter and her fear of whether her daughter “could grow up to be emotionally healthy and fulfilled given our moder culture.” She mentions that becoming pregnant and discovering her child was a girl is the reason she started looking to make a change in the way society and media sees women. When they did have a leading role the women was either pretreated as unintelligent and beautiful, or as conniving and beautiful: But she was always beautiful. Before the 1990’s, men alone, wrote and directed all the movies, and the movies were written for men. In comparison, movies of the 90’s are not only written and directed by women, but leading roles are also held by older and unattractive women. In recent years, scholars have begun to pay attention to what kinds of ideas films are portraying (Stern, Steven E. and Handel, 284). Alarmingly, viewers, especially young women, are increasingly influenced by the lifestyle choices and attitudes that they learn from watching these films (Steele, 331). An example of this can be seen in a popular trope of the “romantic comedy” genre in this day and age: the powerful man doing something to help, or “save” the less powerful woman, representing a troubling “sexual double standard” (Smith, Stacy L, Pieper, Granados, Choueiti, 783).
