Identity; a personalized, blank canvas, you have the brushes and paint right in front of you; with all sorts of textures, colors and brush sizes; the vastness of possibilities of where the brush strokes can take you confuses many people. Extracting every fact about your past and adding a personalized touch to it, before splashing the fusion onto the canvas in front of you seems to be a struggle for many people. “Presents From My Aunts In Pakistan” is a metaphorical, autobiographical poem written by Moniza Alvi about her teenage years in which she portrays her conflict with identity, conveying the overlapping cultures in her background that leave her confused, alienated and embarrassed because of her half-English, half-Pakistani cultural background. Especially during their teenage years, when they move to another country or when their country faces a crisis. I am a teenager, and I know for a fact that one of the main reasons I find it difficult to create an identity is the amount of possibilities of who I can be. Also, most people my age face this struggle and feel pressured to create an identity and stick to it before growing up too quickly. It sometimes feels like a commitment, to be this person and keep being this person you created, so much that you forget to just be yourself and do whatever makes you happy. “I was an alien in the sitting-room” Moniza states. The feeling of alienation is inevitable in cases like these. I think that another chapter with conflicts regarding identity is when a person has parents with different nationalities or has a multi-cultural background, they often seem to struggle in finding their true
