One of the goals of Healthy People 2020 is to reduce the suicide rate in the U.S. which is currently one of the top 10 causes of death. It is clearly in issue and vital to address this issue because these rates have had a steady incline from 1999-2014. This had led to an age-related suicide rate of 24% because it has gone from 10.5 to 13.0 deaths per 100,000. With such a modernized country, I would think that we would have done something about this earlier on by having more programs and being more proactive about this gruesome problem. Healthy People is measuring the suicides by age-adjusted rates per 100,000 and has a target to reduce rates to 10.2 suicides per 100,000 or a 10% improvement. Age-adjusted rates assist in seeing if there are
Suicide is the second leading cause of death for people between ages 15 – 34. Now, the question is where’s the effort to stop it? If 90% of people who commit suicide have a mental illness,
Healthy People 2020 (2015) states, health disparities are a health outcome of greater or lesser extent between populations, which includes populations by race, ethnicity, gender, sexual orientation, age, disability, education, income, or geographic location. The purpose of the post is to discuss how disparities play a role in health, employment, and education for African Americans. I will also discuss two nursing interventions to decrease health disparities in this population, as well as challenges to implementing the nursing interventions.
I enjoyed reading your DQ1 post this week, and there are a lot of contributing factors that led to disparities within the health care system. There are a lot of federal initiative to help aid in decreasing disparities within the health care system like the National HIV/AIDS strategy. The Healthy People 2020 initiative has been a useful tool to track disparities within the United States (U.S.) healthcare system. They analyze and track a wide variety of factors that can lead to disparities like geographic location, ethnicity, and sexual orientation (chap. 11). To end disparities, there has to be an effective way to monitor progression and educate every individual in the health care system about disparities. But like
Healthy People 2020 is a promotion to help raise public awareness by providing measureable objectives and goals for individuals to obtain higher qualities of lives, decrease premature deaths, and promote a higher quality of life (US Department of Health and Human Services, 2014). Healthy People 2020 has monitored its progress for over three decades between communities over the nation to understand where prevention measures are needed most. Fielding, Teutsch, & Koh (2012) projected that Healthy People 2020 will project a greater emphasis on social needs when it comes to health care disparities and will focus on education and income across the reform. One strength I noticed, when navigating through U.S. Department of Health and Human Services
According to “Healthy People 2020”, n.d. exclusively breast feeding infants for at least 3- 6 months significantly impacts their health outcomes and has long terms health benefits. Ultimately, the goal is to encourage nursing mothers to breastfeed for 1 year (“Maternal Infant and Child,” n.d.). Despite this knowledge women continue to face challenges in regard to public or employer accommodation to assist nursing mothers.
Healthy People 2020 has chosen twelve health indicators and has set a goal to improve them. Public health has a significant role in ensuring that these topics are addressed and that the goal is achieved. The leading health topic and indicator that I chose is within the Mental Health Status Improvement, and the indicator is reducing the suicide rate. In 2010, when the 10-year initiative started, the baseline measurement for suicides was 12.1; however, in 2015, it had increased to 13.3. The HP2020 target goal is 10.2 (Healthy People, 2017). The increase denotes that there was no progress made and that the measure worsens instead of improving.
According to the Institute of Medicine (IOM) (2011), Healthy People has changed during the three decades of its existence. The mission of Healthy People 2020 is to: Determine healthcare priorities; Arrange for objectives and goals to be attainable at all levels; Classify research evaluation and data collection requirements; Increase community awareness and knowledge concerning healthy habits, illness, disability, and opportunities for advancement; in addition, Engage various divisions to strengthen guidelines and advance practices by using understanding and evidence-based practices.
One of the Healthy People 2020 initiatives or goals that I want to discuss is sexually transmitted diseases. According to Healthy People 2020 (2015) their goal is to “promote healthy sexual behaviors, strengthen community capacity, and increase access to quality services to prevent sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) and their complications.” One of their objectives in this area is to reduce HPV (human papillomavirus) infections females. I would hope to reduce the incidence of this infection by promoting safe sex, health screenings and immunizations to adolescent and adult women. Certain subtypes of HPV can lead to cervical cancer and anogenital warts (Pomfret, Gagnon Jr, & Gilchrist, 2011).
An increase in the global statistic of suicide rates has sparked a worldwide concern in mental health where it is put

The overall goals of Healthy People 2020 are to achieve health equity, eliminate disparities, and improve the health of all groups (Lancaster & Stanhope, 2016). Rev. Dr. Granger Westberg coined the term “parish nurse” in the early 1980’s as he collaborated to establish healing ministries among healthcare professionals (Brehm & Cruz, 2007). Objectives that are amenable to parish nursing within Healthy People 2020 are that a patient’s physical, mental, quality of life, well-being/satisfaction and participation in everyday activities are addressed which addresses a patients needs in a holistic approach. Parish nurses provide encouragement, support, and information to motivate and facilitate clients as they seek to utilize health services which
According to Healthy People 2020 (HP 2020) (2014), nutrition, physical activity, and Obesity are one of the leading indicators ranking high-priority health issues. There are determinants that affect an individual’s to eat healthy, to be physically active, and maintain a healthy weight. The community setting has an essential effect on actions that impact health. For instance, there are communities that access to fresh fruits and vegetables is not available, and places for physical activities may not be available to motivate individuals to exercise or play. As well, gender, race, ethnicity, education level, and socioeconomic position determine the individual’s perception on healthy eating, physical activity, and obesity (HP 2020, 2014). Furthermore,
In this paper, the student is asked to identify a health problem facing the community they live and work in. The student will analyze long-term and short-term goals that are in line with goals of healthy people 2020. Community nursing is essential to identifying and understanding the epidemiology of health issues that affect the community they serve (In Nies & In McEwen, 2015). This student has selected the health epidemic Risk for violence directed toward self or others as the nursing diagnosis and planned interventions for this paper.
One cause is genetics some people are prone to more illnesses and diseases than others. Lifestyle choices of whether to eat health, exercise, drink water, and see a doctor regularly can make some people healthier than others. A person’s income and access to health care can cause them to be health or unhealthy. Formal education has a positive effect on the health of an individual. A person with a strong support system can have better health due to the support and assistances they can provide. The physical environment can negatively affect a patient’s health if they are in an area without easy access to health care, or work with carcinogens.
We all know someone who has suffered from heart disease. Whether it was from a heart attack, congestive heart failure, or stroke, some type of cardiovascular disease has taken the life of someone we loved way too soon. This epidemic of heart disease must be stopped through the collaboration of physicians, nurses, law makers, and concerned citizens. The purpose of this paper is to examine cardiovascular disease, the risks associated with heart disease and obesity per Milo’s framework, comparison of obesity and Healthy People 2020 national goals, and finally the long-term and short-term goals and interventions selected for this paper.
