Rick Riordan may be one of the most critically acclaimed American novelists. He is an inspiration to kids around the world with his books being published in many different languages. Riordan is the author behind works of Percy Jackson series, the Kane Chronicles, and The 39 Clues. Many of these books are a staple in the reading education systems in numerous schools. He encourages his readers to be influenced by their imagination instead of solely by the text on the page (Miller, “Talking Volumes”). This theorem has also influenced and challenged him, the writer, to think more critically and to produce content that’s a perfect mix of vagueness and descriptiveness. Kids frequently asked if they could read the books and Riordan always replied, “No, you’re too young! My students somehow thought that this was a challenge and they would come back to school with a copy of my book in hand” (Riordan). He then wished he had a teen novel to hand them, instead of an explicit adult mystery novel. This was the first spark which led to the roaring fire of the Percy Jackson series. The first book in the series, The Lightning Thief, has an interesting background story. Riordan’s son Haley was diagnosed with ADHD and dyslexia at a young age. ADHD, Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder, is a learning disorder that affects a student 's ability to focus; dyslexia is a learning disorder that affects reading. Haley was fond of his dad’s knowledge of Greek mythology and would often ask him to tell him stories of the great heros and villians. One night, Haley asked his dad to make up a bedtime story involving Greek mythology. Riordan came up with the character Percy Jackson on the spot. Riordan said that he quickly reverted to a creative writing project that he had assigned to sixth graders. In this project, they would have to create their own “demigod hero,” that was a son/daughter of any Greek god, and send this hero on a quest. He told his son almost the whole story of Percy Jackson before it was written on paper. It took Riordan three nights to tell the whole tale and afterwards Haley told him that he should

According to the American Library Association (ALA), young adult novels are challenged with the best intentions. In most cases a parent will read a book that their child might be reading in class to find out if the book is hazardous to their child’s well-being. If the novel seems problematic, the parent then challenges the book. Even though the purpose of challenging a novel is to keep children from reading about issues that may not be seen as appropriate for their age group, censoring children from difficult subject matter is not always the solution. There is always controversy when difficult issues arise in adolescent geared novels. Even though there are many concerns with Lois Lowry’s The Giver,
Dark themes are on the rise in young adult literature, and parents can’t help but wonder if this is due to the abundance of these subjects in adult literature. Literary critic Meghan Cox Gurdon’s editorial “Darkness Too Visible” and author Sherman Alexie’s response “Why the Best Kids Books are Written in Blood” have contrasting views on this subject. However, with the superior techniques Alexie Sherman is more effective. Both authors use themes and style in their writing, but with his superior use of persuasive techniques Alexie Sherman’s article is ultimately more effective.
The hero of the story is of course Perseus Jackson, a literal homage to traditional Greek heroes. Percy was a somewhat normal kid living in New York before he went on the journey of becoming a real hero.

A book is like a door, without stepping through the door, you will never know what's on the other side. It is a mystery that can only be unveiled if you open it and look through it. Dana Gioia wants us to take that mystery and open it up, as many young adults have lost interest in the action of reading itself.
In this novel, there is explicit language that is deemed inappropriate for teens, so the novel is not used in schools.
In an age where the printed novel has been somewhat on the decline, and the necessity of readable fiction has almost faded into obscurity. I believe that literature still harbours a crucial part within our society; from the very foundations of most theatrical adaptations, to preserving the culture and encapsulating the feelings of generations past. In this case literature cements itself as one of the most decisive elements of our civilisation, and combining it with history makes it become a testament to who we are as people, as well as the conservation of both our progression and degradation. I have always enjoyed reading literature, from reading J.R.R Tolkien’s classic ‘Lord of the Rings’ trilogy within my childhood, to perhaps more sophisticated,
