Politics or Religion
In sustainability: The New Holy Grail, Miller argues that people who question the United States ability to become more sustainable devalue American innovation. The arguments made throughout his article however seem one sided and aggressive. Millers out view on things are from a religious outlook making his points seem unreliable.
Miller begins by telling us that the world thinks our nations lifestyles are unsustainable. Then he goes on to say “We are told these things by members of the party that have been pretty much in charge for the past fifty plus years.” (135). Yet he doesn’t provide any evidence to support his findings, no actual names of said party members or references, making his statement less reliable. There is no doubt Miller is a proud American but perhaps too proud making his opinion bias.
Without trying to take away from Millers intelligence, we can also note that his opinion is from a very right side view. To extend on my analysis Miller proves my point by statements made throughout his article. Such as his entire third paragraph where he essentially says, that progress should not

That we the people have become sheep to their system. He believes that anyone who doesn’t believe in the original American standard of stainability, devalues American innovation. The more Miller tries to back up his statements the weaker his evidence gets. Not only does his article turn from biases to insults, but he starts to generalize the lower class Americans. His point of view towards the end seems to come from a very republican higher political class, making his article appear bias and ignorant. Although he is right about we the people having the ultimate power, he loses me when religion is brought into the article as it comes to an end. In my complete evaluation of his article I am in disbelief of his statements due to his poor word choices and tone of
I find it interesting both in these quotes and in many passages in the text, the constant criticism of American culture, and its position in the world. It seems both from within the country and outside it has become the popular past time for so many to berate Americans for a whole host of behaviors or positions that have made this country great for some time
UVM, specifically Vermont, is the perfect place for sustainability and going “green.” UVM has taken many steps in becoming a top school for not only environmental education but a top school for sustainability as well. UVM is continuing to strive for climate neutrality and these efforts will continue well into the future. UVM’s efforts are inspirational to the community, students and the future of sustainability.
What he writes here is wanting the country to become an example to the world by how the country conducted itself. This should be a goal the country have for itself because how can the US tell someone one thing not do it themselves. One way we have shown this is with the Civil Rights of 1964 it help, “end discrimination based on race, colour, religion, or national origin.” (Britannica Concise Encyclopedia) With this law it shows that the US does not only preach that all man are equal but also shows they are to. This shows that the US wants to take care of its people and not have their people live in
It makes the readers think that Islamism is in an important, oil-rich part of the globe. He also says that Miller has turned Muslims into a threat to the west. Also, he says that Muslim countries conflicts cannot just be blamed on Zionism and imperialism, but simultaneously the blame cannot be taken off Israel and the United States. Although Miller says that the subject of Judaism is another book, Said says it is pretty clear that it’s part of the book that she’s using to go after
“There’s more people! That’s what’s ruining this country! The competition is maddening!” (Miller). He claims that the amount of people in this country is taking his success.
The term sustainability is one that been conceptualized since the early civilizations of humans inhabited the earth. During those primative times, everything that allowed civilizations to thrive came from the earth. Humans during those times were more more in touch with their reliance on the environment. In today's society, the reliance on our natural environment seems much further away due to our insulation from modern conveniences. Nevertheless, this conception could not be further from the truth; we are more reliant now on the world's renewable resources than ever before.
“ Indeed, a great principle. He tried so hard to let these animal understand what is Americanism, but he didn’t realize that they do not belong to America, they could never become American like us.”
Harold Koh and Ted Bromund are keeping different opinions based on the influence of American Exceptionlism. It is a debate between “pure” virtues and “both good and bad”. In my opinion, American Exceptionalism has both good and bad sides and we should try to reduce the double standards by following better angles of national nature.
While reading this interview, Millet never asked a question that would impose Miller to answer directly as to why he agreed to the interview. However, after reading the entirety of the article it’s easily inferred that Miller endured a lot throughout the movement in Mississippi. Miller answers questions very in depth, and provides personal information about his family and the course of his life, even going back to a question if something else popped into his head that he had forgotten. His carefully worded his answers, and even explaining his parent’s injustice they
Even as his modest powers decline and his career falls apart, he believes that he can still be at the top. Through this, Arthur Miller blatantly expresses the fallibility of the American Dream, contending that the notion of betterment across generations is false and only detrimental to ones existence. Furthermore, it shows that there are many forms of failure as well as success that are spawned by our American system. The Lomans are all an example of what life is like if you continually live in a dream world and never train yourself for anything.
He was self- obsessed. "To some this may seem like an invention, but whatever I imagine to have happened did actually happen, at least to me. History made me deny it, since I have played no part in the history of my people, but even if everything I say is wrong, is prejudiced, spiteful, malevolent, even if I am a liar and a poisoner, it is nevertheless the truth and it will be swallowed."( Miller
An ethical analysis usually has four main components, one of which reflects the issue of sustainability. During an ethical analysis, one does an evaluation of the context where actions take place. It is then determined whether the action undermines or supports the system or context, which makes the action possible and meaningful at all. This relates to the definition of sustainability, which is living on the land without ruining it, limiting how much one uses reserves so as to not deplete them faster than can be replenished, to not undermine the prerequisites of what one is doing, and using without using up.
Moving on from this, Miller helps discuss one of the side issues that leads to confusion; medias’ portrayal of events. Because the media (“New York Times,” “Los Angeles Times,” etc.) wants to “show both sides of the story,” they allow deniers of the issues, less reputable scientists, and advocates for non-environmental friendly companies to essentially blow off the issue of global warming, and publish their opinions, when in reality, the problem is only becoming ever more present. From the increasing amount of fossil fuels burned, deforestation taking place, and emission of pollution (from electricity generated, transportation, etc.) scientists and researchers have been able to collect data of the global climate’s rise, as well as
Miller -- a profound playwright in American history, yet ironically so since his works ridicule stereotypical American people and philosophies. In each of his works, Miller demonstrates harmful but stereotypical American characteristics creating a periodic table of the American Lie. Peculiarly, many Americans mock the characters with the traits consisting of the periodic table; however, with a self evaluation these people realize that they represent the same characters. Providing support for Miller’s stereotypical accusations, fans of his work fail to recognize the irony in their own lives and prove the faulty philosophies of common Americans; satirizing the American Dream, Miller instead demonstrates an American Lie exemplifying his belief in strong morals and their
In order to be an integral part in saving the Earth’s environment and ensuring resources for future generations, the way individuals live needs to change. Being fortunate enough to reside in one of the nation’s most developed countries, I wanted to make sure the way I have been living has been meeting the standards set by sustainable living. Using the overall environmental footprint provided by Global Footprint Network, I was able to pinpoint the areas in my life that needed to improve in order for me to be more sustainable. I chose to use this Footprint calculator because it gives you a breakdown on how many resources from the planet are needed in order to provide for your living standards. Once you have input the information, the calculator provides a general ecological footprint explanation and gives real case scenarios in which you can do to reduce it. The results for my footprint were as follows: If everyone were to live the way I do, we would need 5.3 planet earths to provide enough resources. It would take 23.6 global acres of land for energy production, which would emit 23.6 tons of carbon dioxide, and the biggest impacts on my personal footprint included 36 percent of services, 21 percent food and 19 percent mobility.
