The story “The Birthmark” by Nathaniel Hawthorne tells of a mad scientist named Alymer. Alymer gives up science for a while once he marries Georgiana. Alymer soon becomes disgusted with the birthmark located on her cheeks. He states that it is the only thing that stops her from being perfect. As time progresses Alymer becomes obsessed with it and wishes to remove it through some of us scientific techniques. Georgiana agrees because all she wants more than anything is for her husband to truly love her. In “The Birthmark”, Nathaniel Hawthorne includes a variety of themes. The two most powerful are obsession and the conflict between nature and science.
Hawthorne shows that when love becomes an obsession, it is dangerous, even deadly. Aylmer
