“Holy Cow, An Indian Adventure,” by Sarah MacDonald, is a book written describing Sarah’s experience living in India. She goes through many tough times and endures life changing experiences that eventually make her the person she is meant to be. In this book Sarah relates India to western perspective several times. India and the United States do have similarities, India and the United States both are run by a Democracy, they both have very strong cast systems; both have their own “Hollywood” films, and both places have many religions mixed within. India like the United States has a Democracy for their form of Government. India is a free nation with rights given to the people and laws to protect them. Although India’s Democracy is not exactly like the United States it is set up very similar. In the book Sarah doesn’t talk about India’s Government and never runs into any trouble by authorities, although she does mention that India has a Democracy. This means India is a free nation and allows people to have opportunities for individuals to decide which ones they would like to take. Within the Democracy, India like the U.S. has a strongly defined cast system. Since India allows people to live freely, some people are very successful, some get by modestly, and others live in poverty. These three levels make up India’s cast system. Just like India the United States has an upper class, middle class, and lower class. Each class is based off of income level and quality of living.
Caste system involves the division of society. The caste system can vary from high class groups to low class groups. The society then gives respect to the high class groups and discriminates against the low caste groups. Inequality in in social relationships lead to high levels of poverty among the low caste groups and
Many questions have risen in this day and age in which ones wealth can greatly effect almost every aspect of their lives. There has been much controversy as to whether the recognition of socioeconomic classes are for the benefit of society as a whole. Socioeconomic class is defined as some combination of occupation, education, and income level (Heimer 802). A good society consists of equality, support for the government, educated individuals, better living conditions, and low crime rates. As research will show, socioeconomic classes contribute to social inequality, lower support for the government, subpar education levels, income insecurity for some classes, lower living conditions, trouble transitioning into adulthood, and higher crime rates. Therefore, socioeconomic classes are a detriment to society and do more harm than good for the people.
Since the beginning of time there has been separation of economic classes; the poor, middle class, working class, and upper class. Most people are considered or identifies as middle class or the working class.
Americans also hold idea that theirs is a “classless” society. Derived from revolutionary ideas in Europe and shaped by American dislike for special privilege based on birth or rank, this classless notion had denied culturally derived differences based on caste or inheritance but extolled differences in status based on ability and achievement. This concept of classless men obscures the fact that blurred and non-rigid stratification lines based on achievement and wealth, position and power, do exist in America. Sociologists generally divide American society into three strata or class: Upper class, middle class and lower class. Frequently they make gradations within these three
Allison, I don’t agree with your statement that “I think it is interesting because, in America, we too have different classes of people, as well as in the world.”. As you are comparing Hinduisms caste system to American capitalism. In America, we have a lower, middle, and upper class. However, a person is not confined to any specific class in the United States. It is possible for someone from the lower class to be a part of the upper class through education or entrepreneurship. Whereas in the Hinduism caste system, the people are restricted to their class. A person that is born a Shudra could be a genius, but cannot become a doctor because of their class. The only exception of an individual leaving their caste system would be a woman.
Untouchability as claimed by the Indian government is said to be abandoned 60 years ago, however still 40% of Dalits are illiterate (Around 70 million). This tells us that the caste system unfortunately still exists. The caste system is a system of class and hierarchy, it divides people in terms of classes called castes which usually determines their status in the community and therefor their livelihoods. The caste system still exists and if not constitutionally definitely socially. The caste system presence keeps different communities separated, lowers national GDP (Economic activity/development), discriminates against those of the lower caste, slows the development procedure and creates unlimited social consequences.
American life is driven by the people’s income, education and occupation. These factors play a role in America’s class system. The social class in America can not be upheld by law but rather the social class is a concept. Social classes divide groups of people based on their wealth and status. America was formed as a “classless society” (Rocca) but beliefs change throughout history altering this and creating the class system.
America would like to believe that we do not live in a caste system but if asked anyone living in the inner city would say otherwise. A class system exists that is built on individual’s achievements but elements of a caste system are certainly practiced in the United States. Power and wealth is distributed amongst only 1 percent of the U.S population, therefore, their wealth is inherited from generation to generation, segregated from the rest of the population. Consequently, the ghetto poor families living in the inner city are the most alienated class of people in the city. They are racially and socially discriminated against and are segregated within a close opportunity structure similarly in a caste system.
In the U.S. there are six social classes. The six social classes include the upper class, the middle class, the working class, the lower class, and the underclass. The upper class is divided into two groups, the upper-upper class, who’re earning hundreds of millions to billions per year, and the lower-upper class who’re
Class systems in America are based on wealth and opportunities. It is also somewhat hard to move up from one class to another, however it isn’t impossible. To start, there are three main classes in the US. They are the upper, middle, and lower class. The upper class consists of the top one percent while the middle encompasses the majority of the population. The lower class consists of families with low income and little financial security. The riches are definitely not equally spread in the US. Wealth affects which class you are in. The amount of wealth that a person has is determined by education, occupation, and income. When someone has a college degree they have more job opportunities, and a better job leads to more income. People who don’t
In the United States, people and their families are categorized in a class based on power, wealth and occupational prestige. There are five categories in the United States that categorizes our nation’s people. The classification of our nation’s status includes the poor, the near poor, the working class, the middle class, and the upper Class.
In the United State there are six different social classes. The Upper-Upper class consists of the top one percent in America. This is the families who have been rich for generations. The Lower- Upper class is people who have new money like celebrities and professional athletes. This makes up the top two percent of America. The Upper-Middle class is people who have high education and good paying careers, like doctors, lawyers, and other people with doctoral and professional degrees. This class makes up ten percent of the American population. The Lower-Middle class makes up twenty-eight percent of the population. This class consists of profession like teachers, social workers, and accountants. The fifth major social class in America is the Working class, which makes up thirty-five percent of the population. This class has both skilled and unskilled laborers. The last class is the Lower Working class which is people who are poor or near poor, unskilled and uneducated Americans. This class makes up for twenty-five percent of the population in
In the region of India, society is constructed in a hierarchy. This hierarchy divides individuals in caste groups, ranking individuals based on wealth and power. Society in the United States on the other hand is not based on religion. Society is divided into three classes: the wealthy class, middle class, and poor class. As the rich continue to get richer, the poor continue to get poorer, creating
Social class is a system of social stratification, the hierarchy creates specific types of social inequalities. Social inequality refers to the existence of social inequalities created such as ownership, types of occupation that creates differences in wealth, income and power, while social stratification refers to the existence of social groups. Class can be arranged to economic factors such as income, education, wealth and other factors at work. Poverty remains high and could argue that true poverty cannot exist in a country as rich as the United States. It is clear that poverty has an impact on certain groups of people, while other groups have it easy, but poverty is often associated with something low education, poor health and social
In the United States there is three social classes. There is a lower class nation, middle class, and the upper class nation. The lower class is the working class the “blue collar” , the middle class is the “white collar” jobs and the upper class is the independently wealthy class. In the united states there is more people that fit into the middle class than into any of the other two social classes. In the article Middle Class In America by the U.S. Department of Commerce states that, “Middle class families are defined by their aspirations more than their
