Michael Crichton, the author of the science fiction novel “Timeline”, Mr. Crichton wrote this book because he always wanted to write a time-travel story, but mostly because he thought it would be a unique way to talk about history and also because he thought it would be an interesting adventure. Choosing the time, which the story will take place is his first problem and since he wanted to talk about history, he can’t take it too far into the past because than the history will be made up. He chose 1360 Europe and study details from a documentary about clothing, food, speech mannerisms, and details of how people lived and behaved. He set it at 1360 Europe because he was also interested in a time when knights still fought. For the most part of the novel, specific details about history are not discussed in details. Although the story is placed during the Hundred Years war in Europe, no specific details of the war were in the book. However, the book gives an accurate description of medieval life and how you have to fight to survive. There is also a small reference to the Black Death, which is occurring in Europe at that time. The first historic references are the way Mr. Crichton describes the clothing of the period. In the novel, main characters wears undershorts, hose, double and an outer short. Mr. Crichton did a great job of describing the environment and also the decoration of villages and castles. Although all the historical references are accurate, there is one
In the essay written by Joey Franklin, the author exposes his own internal conflict, as well as the existing prejudice against fast food restaurant workers. The work is well developed, with the use of witty diction and tone, in addition to the appeals to rhetorical devices.
The plot itself may seem classically medieval, with characters and events that the people would have appreciated, but the underlying messages reveal where the culture was heading. The story follows a main character, Beowulf, who is a traditional epic hero. His position in the story is important, because it is something that readers at the time would readily recognize and appreciate. Not only is he a great hero, but he has some almost supernatural abilities. He kills Grendel, a monster terrorizing
Looking at the insight from historians such as: Roy Rosenzweig, Nick Salvatore, and Lizabeth Cohen, on the history of American labor, we can better understand the issues, challenges, and successes of ordinary Americans during a time when industrial capitalism and corporations took over as the leading principle in American society. The depth of character of immigrants or ordinary Americans to meet the demanding needs of what an industrial society requires is truly amazing. I have reviewed three historical monographs in accordance to their copyright and each describe how persistent ordinary, working class Americans confronted or beat back those demanding needs. The order is as follows: Eight Hours For What We Will by Roy Rosenzweig; Eugene
Knights are one of the most mistaken figures of the medieval era due to fairytales and over exaggerated fiction novels. When medieval knights roamed the earth, it was known that they were only human and, like humans, had faults. These knights did not always live up to the standards designated by society. However, in The Canterbury Tales, the knight is revealed as a character that would now be considered a knight in shining armor, a perfect role model in how he acts and what he does. Modern day people see them as chivalrous figures instead of their actual role as mounted cavalry soldiers. As time passes, the idea of what a knight is changes from a simple cavalry soldier to a specific type of behavior.
The setting was different from most books about the World Wars. I had never heard of Latvia or Stalin until I read this book. The flashbacks in the story helped give a better understanding of how Lina’s life was before and the difference now. The event of the mother and father dying showed the hardships that the young children and teenager had to go through. Although there were some sad parts that I disliked, such as when Jonas changed into a mean person and started to smoke, those were the reality of what had happened during the wars. This book is one of my favorite books I have ever read! I would recommend this book to everyone and
There are many ways to explore any period in history. The period that we will look further into will be Medieval Europe. I found an academic article that explores deeper into that period, especially the Black plague. Assembling three primary sources of the black plague, each has a different perspective of what was portrayed in the academic article.
The Time in Between by David Bergen tries to show a different kind of cultural understand than is usually shown within the Vietnam war narrative. Bergen tries to highlight the cultural similarities instead of the cultural differences, where there is a sense of cultural appreciation. During the Vietnam war there has often been a stigmatization towards the Vietnamese that associates them as the enemy, they are seen as the opposing other. There is often an Eurocentric view of the Vietnam war that tells the story of the white male American solider and very rarely has another perspective been represented through media and literature. The attempt to acknowledge the war from the other perspective through the Vietnamese solider is used in The Time in Between. The trauma that is often associated with the Vietnam war is seen through the lens of the white male solider, often forgetting the the symptoms of trauma were experienced by both sides. The trauma from the war becomes a bridge between the two cultures and subverts the stereotypes of the Vietnamese as being the cultural “others”.
Another important event was the Great Famine. It was a period of starvation in Ireland. Many peasants could not provide for themselves when the potato crop failure hit them. The Irish relied on potatoes as one of their main food sources. The crops were ruined by a "blight" which is an early frost that kills off the roots of the plant. This was the worst famine Europe had ever experienced. The next event that was important was The Hundred Years' War. It was fought between France in England between 1337 to 1453. There were two factors that contributed to the war which were fighting over territory that Great Britain owned but France claimed as their own and second that the British claimed the crown of France because the closest relatives of the latest King had died. The war lasted for over a hundred years. Lastly, the Black Death served an important role in history of the Middle Ages. The Black Death was one of the worst breakouts to this day. Over 20 million people died. The first known outbreak was when trading ships docked at a Sicilian port of Messina and the sailors aboard were found either dead or deathly
The fourteenth and fifteenth centuries were a particularly dreadful time in Europe. The fourteenth century was so bad it is regularly referred to as the calamitous century. During this timeframe the Hundred Years War between France and England occurred. Additionally, there were major upheavals in the power and structure of the Catholic Church. Finally, the Black Death wiped out an estimated one-third of the population of Western Europe. This Black Death or Bubonic Plague was the primary cause of the massive economic and social changes in Europe during the fourteenth and fifteenth centuries. The sheer number of deaths attributed to the plague led to a series of other unfortunate events such as famine and war that compounded the problems and led to the calamity. The Black Death was so well known that it shaped basically all vestiges of art and literature from this timeframe.
One would think that after the death of many people during the Bubonic Plague, a war would be the last thing Europe would be participating in. But along the changes that were happening, one of the major things that were happening was the endless wars between the English Kings and the French Kings. (Pages 313-314). But also during the Hundred Years' War, there were violence outbreaks in French, there was a group called Chevauchees who were destroying and killing people in any way they could and the reason why this was happening because of the impact of the wars between the English and the French King. (Pg. 315).
First, it needs to be understood that the book gives a riveting historical account of the appalling circumstances that
The first element works well for me is the costume. The clothes they wore were consistence with the clothing characteristics at that time, which brought audience to the particular time period well. From the costume of the man who came later, we could tell he was a noble. At that time, man preferred to wear tight pants. The woman’s clothes was distinctive as well. From the dress of these people, we could initially estimate their identities and classes.
Through the modern eyes, history of Western civilization, from the fall of the Roman Empire to the Age of Discovery, is seen through Medieval literature. Ten centuries of history are noticed, involving individual products of heroic periods and their unique era of culture. Acknowledging Medieval literature illustrates a society of heroic knights, led by a luxurious king, charging into battle, romantic connections between royalty and a common person, and new discoveries being found. As well as times characterized by feudal activity, along with the Catholic Church holding an influencing control of society, and placing heavily on the laws they laid. The Church ruled simultaneously with the government, controlling every aspect of the Medieval
“In a moment my hand was on the lever and I had placed a month between myself and these monsters.” What a classic, wonderfully imaginative science fiction sentence. The story is completely and utterly engrossing. The fact that the book was published in 1895 and science-lovers can still love and appreciate this book and H.G. Wells
The novel, A Game of Thrones, begins with an encounter with supernatural beings; this may give a false impression as to what will come. As the story begins to unfold, the theme moves strongly into the area of political intrigue and this forthcoming war that will happen as a result. The fantasy element, while always there plays only a minor role in the majority of the rest of the book. A Game of Thrones in not your usual fare, it is hard-hitting and bad things do happen to the good people. Two families take centre stage in a battle for the Throne the Starks and the Lannisters. The Stark family live in the cold hard
