Walking the Camino is much more than a physical challenge. It is an internal journey which has the potential to grow and expand your heart and soul. The Ascent to Santiago will help you be as intentional about the inward journey, as you have been in preparing physically to walk to Santiago. There are three components to this journal. Contemplative Prompts which will assist you in being attentive as to how the Camino is impacting your heart. Journal Pages where you can explore and express what you are experiencing, thinking, and feeling. And Scriptures for Mediation, which because of their themes, are excellent companions to the daily contemplative prompts. The Ascent to Santiago will help open you to the reality of your own heart, and
Santiago’s growth was inspiring to me. He has learned a great deal from action. He learns quite a lot about the land and his sheep by being a shepherd and paying attention to the world around him. His grandfather had mentioned to him a while back of an omen. “By traveling, watching and paying attention, the world will speak to Santiago to help him find is Personal Legend.” Through action, Santiago learns how easy it is to search for one’s Personal Legend. Everyone has their own way of learning things. For example when Santiago decides to try reading the Englishman’s book and he would try and read the signs of the desert. The boy does not learn a thing from the book and the Englishman learns nothing from watching the caravan. Just as Santiago
The third and fourth obstacle Santiago faces is his fear of defeat and realizing his dream. For example, “They made him continue digging, but he found nothing. As the sun rose, the men began to beat the boy. He was bruised and bleeding, his clothes torn to shreds, and he felt death was near.” The obstacle he defeated was the fear of defeat people will meet on the journey to fulfilling our destiny. People have to be patient in difficult times and know that the universe is conspiring in our favor, even if some do not know. Santiago had patience and allowed the men to beat him. Because of his patience they eventually left him alone
Paulo Coelho raises and supports the idea that all individuals should pursue their Personal Legends above anything else. The way he demonstrates this is by showing that following aspirations in life can reveal true purposes and deeper meanings. When Santiago’s Personal Legend is revealed, Coelho writes to make him follow his life’s purpose and take that journey. “The closer one gets to realizing his Personal Legend, the more that Personal Legend becomes his true reason for being, thought the boy,” (Coelho 75). Santiago believes that his Personal Legend will reveal to him what his true purpose in life is. This theme of pursuing Personal Legends exists and manifests in each of the major characters. Santiago’s dream of treasure in Egypt reveals to him his Personal Legend. Santiago goes on this long and tiring journey to find out what his true purpose is. Little does he know, his personal legend is the journey itself. On his
While reading the Spiritual Disciplines Handbook, I did not expect to come across a spiritual discipline that would be a perfect combination of my own idea of spiritual formation, and a wonderful way to connect with the Lord. What I mean by this, is that I was wanting to create a gratitude journal, but I wanted it to be deeper than just a list of things that I was thankful for. That is why I fell in love with the idea of writing responses to the questions that were posed in the Spiritual Disciplines Handbook, but still taking a few minutes to write a list of things that I am grateful for! A journal like this is also a great way for me to see the strong points in my day or week, and the areas where I need improvement. Since journaling has always
Even when Santiago thinks he has found love and is ready to give up his mission for Fatima, he is obviously going to make a huge mistake. Coelho tells us in his novel that the Soul of the World has a Personal Legend for
In typing out this journal one should note that from this journal onwards there will be great memory work, in some journals more than others, but memory work nonetheless, as from this point forward I am writing these journals and reflecting on group sessions based on jot notes I have taken of the sessions either at some point during that given day or of that week.
“It's time to go”, said my mom. My stomach was churning and anxiety was running through my veins. Today was the day! It was the time to start a mountainous trek to the Mayan city, Machu Picchu. We had signed up for a four-day trek through the Andes Mountains to get to the lost city of Machu Picchu. We started the trek in the city of Cuzco. We were not allowed to go by ourselves up the mountain, so we had to go with a group of people and a tour guide. We would stay with the group for the four days of the trek and would go where they would go. We had porters who would help carry our belongings to each campsite. As we started the trek on the first day, it started to rain. I wore my rain jacket and kept on going. By the time I got to the three-mile mark my legs were hurting and I wanted to sit down. I knew I had to keep going. Finally, after 2 hours I saw the campsite. I washed my hands and ate dinner. After a long day of hiking, we went to bed.
Santiago appreciates the ocean “He always thought of the sea as la mar…but they always said as though she were a woman” (29). The old man was born to
Many people in the world have been able to know what is their personal legend in life and some have been able to achieve it. As a matter of fact, this book is about being able to follow your dreams and your goals in life. As a result of this story, it explains what is a personal legend and how it is able to affect a person's life. Paulo Coelho, the author of The Alchemist calls this novel a desire on a personal legend. When the story begins, the audience finds a young shepherd by the name of Santiago, who is spending his time fulfilling his passion of traveling through the fields and towns of Spain. Although Santiago, the main character, and his slow attempts of reaching his own personal legend of his goal. For example, when people are young they know what is their personal legend, and at a certain point in their lives everything comes together. However, as time goes on in life, there is this mysterious force that seems to blind people to their achievement of goals.
It should be easy keeping a journal. This is not about writing perfectly, nor is about writing about a glamorous lifestyle. The purpose of this journal is not for others but for your benefit. Your journal should be for you, you can write a few sentences or much longer. You can write in sentences, prose or just take notes. It should be easy for you.
As I trudge on down the long and worn dirt path, the blazing sun beats furiously down upon me as I cannot help but question why I was forced on such a quest. I knew that embarking on a pilgrimage to the Santiago de Compostela Cathedral would help me renew my faith and rid me of my sins, but still I wondered why such an expedition was necessary to prove my faith to my family. Back at my home in Biarritz, France, I had committed many sins and was truly guilty and responsible for all of them. But my parents knew that by forcing me on this journey, I would truly grow in my faith and my relationship with God would be closer than ever. I had just embarked from St. Jean-Pied-du-Port this morning, about four hours ago, and I was already feeling quite
I traveled to Barcelona, Spain last July to help a family teach their daughter English and to discover a whole new world I’d never experienced before. The trip was a whirlwind of tapas and teaching, with several bike rides to the beach dispersed throughout. Three weeks after my arrival, I was conversing in fluent Spanish to a cheerful stranger after being tumbled by a rogue Mediterranean wave. Strands of seaweed and pearly white grains of sand adorned my hair. My nose and cheeks were burned a deep pink. My left knee sluggishly bled crimson, and I had never felt more beautiful. I felt comfortable in my skin, and no longer had the nagging fears I felt at home before I left. My transition from childhood into adulthood was not a graceful glide from one to the next, but instead a jarring fall.
It was an overcast Saturday in May and a day that I will never forget. Fear of the unknown, fear of inadequacy, fear of my abilities, fear of people I barely knew, and in the midst of my fear I realized time is up! I was at the base of Winding Stair Gap and about to begin a steep 6.2 miles hike up a winding trail at an elevation of 1,500 ft. Fear was stuck in the middle of my throat, and I began to question myself about my decision. I thought, “oh Lord Jesus, I cannot do this”, so I began to pray.
Keeping a journal is something that most people don’t do, including myself. In today’s busy world, very few people take the time to write down their ideas and life experiences. Most of what is captured in pictures nowadays. I’ve always liked the idea of keeping a journal. It has a personal sense to it that nothing can compare to. It’s almost as if you’re taking strands of your life and putting it into a book that becomes a part of you. Keeping a journal has its benefits as well. It allows someone to improve their writing skills little by little. Learning how to organize thoughts and to thoroughly express feelings can greatly improve writing skills. In keeping this journal, I hope to do exactly that.
I began to see the narrative of my life, what kinds of things I wrote about and what I wasn’t inclined to write about and share online. My blog consists of a series of personal essays, mostly unedited, and focusing on the intersection between life events and my living faith. My blog became the place where an introvert wasn’t scared to share her deepest or most lighthearted tidbits of information, observations and inner dialogue. My blog helped me to see that I was a person who was constantly evolving, changing, and growing. It helped me to divulge the thoughts that often did not fit in casual conversation. Through the entries that I kept, my journey was shared with the whole world, and anyone who wanted to read it could freely do so at their leisure.
