Introduction The Community Outreach department and the Women on the Move (WOTM) program continues to build great sustainable relationships with partner agencies in the broader community. Much of our efforts focuses on providing educational workshop in a series format. Our expectation with delivering workshop series comes from our desire to build on existing knowledge, so that the information are delivered in a way that is seamless and provides important context to the topics we address. Two such examples worth mentioning, is our work with Unison Health and Community Services, in their many locations in the west end of the city, and The 519 Community Centre. With these organizations specifically, we work in partnership to deliver violence …show more content…
Her mother extended much appreciation to the Redwood for supporting her daughter, and was happy to see staff up close, as she had seen videos and photographs. Women on the Move participants benefited this summer from tickets to Canada’s Wonderland, and the Movie and popcorn event at the Review Theatre. Women enthusiastically participated in both events. One woman from an early WOTM group expressed her appreciation to the Redwood for including her family in activities even though she was in one of the earlier groups. The Community Outreach team tabled at the annual Big on Bloor festival and at the Parkdale Collegiate girls night event. Workshops During this reporting period, the outreach team facilitated 12 workshops with five partner agencies and schools. To date, 148 women participated in the community workshops. To ensure the useful application of community workshops for each unique group, each participants completes a post-workshops evaluation after each session. This information assures the outreach goals and objectives are met to inform and inspire women. As many participants have stated, they are more aware of ways in which violence affects women and children, and feel more confident in their ability to share the information. These two groups (519 and Unison) are unique as the participants are connected to the programs on a longer term, which allows the facilitators to gain better awareness of who the participants
My desire to work with this specific population stemmed from having close friends and a family member in abusive relationship, and do not have the courage to leave. I am hoping with the skills that I would learn from the MSW program; I would be more effective in empowering women, and give me them the tools to deal with daily life issues. I am hoping that I would be able to assist many people in the country I grew up, where this service is not available. There are many women in Nigeria that feels that their worth is linked to the men they married; or they have to be married to be complete. They stay in abusive relationships in order to meet the society norms. I plan to change the culture one time at a
The group of participants meet regularly, allowing the participants share their experiences, hopes and resources with each other. There is telephone support available at all times. The confidentiality and anonymity of the families is respected at all time. This organization is different from
Crawford County, Kansas is very familiar to me; it is where I was born and raised and now, as an adult, it is where I work as a nurse. Barriers to healthcare exists in every community. There is a high amount of poverty in Crawford County that contributes to barriers to access to healthcare. Furthermore, Crawford County has several stakeholders that influence the health of the community and advanced practice registered nurse (ARNP) practice. In this assessment of my community, I will identify Crawford County, as well as prevalent health care barriers and important stakeholders in my community.
My reflections of Chapter 11 of the Corey text discussing Groups in Community Settings, and more specifically working with adult populations, begins with the fact that these populations vary widely and are typically diverse in their makeup. Furthermore, the ability of professional counselors to work with a variety of adult populations utilizing a well-rounded set of clinically effective group experiences, techniques, and skills are paramount to facilitator efficacy. The multitude of diverse populations falling within the category of “adult groups” include, but are not limited to, a) women’s groups, b) men’s groups, c) domestic violence offender groups, d) sex offender groups, e) HIV/AIDS support groups, and f) older adult (elderly) groups
It is just as important to work with those within the community. Collaboration skills are going to be needed as the only way for this program to be successful is to gain acceptance from within the community. Strong ethical leadership will be needed as there will be members of the community watching very closely. As a leader it will be my responsibility to present our vision to the community in a way that they will also see the benefits in helping these women.
I completed my service project working alongside Dawn McKee from the Centre County Women’s Resource Center. She, along with the director of the Children’s Advocacy Center, director of the Youth Service Bureau, a representative from Children and Youth Services, and a representative from YMCA of Centre County came together to organize an event for sexual assault and child abuse. They coordinated an event on the courthouse steps in Bellefonte where they recognized members in the community who were dedicated to preventing and spreading awareness of sexual assault and child abuse.
The event that the club chose to highlight is their Community Thanksgiving Dinner held each November to serve between 50-150 community members a free delicious holiday meal. To make this event happen the students have to plan the date and venue, advertise in the newspaper and around town, organize who

Collaborate with community women’s groups to design and facilitate workshops and forums to address issues of violence from many perspectives, particularly against women and girls. For example PAVE, IWD, TBTN
The position that I would give Eli Jones is the role of “Community Outreach Advocate”. I would give Mr. Jones this position because of his deep ties to his family and community. In the background information about Mr. Jones it states, “Eli comes from a southern African-American background and still maintains close ties with his family and friends in Birmingham, Alabama” (pg. 1). Understanding who Mr. Jones is, and what makes him the happiest would help to contribute to the overall successes of him being in the role of the Community Outreach Advocate. Author Ken Robinson states that “Creativity often taps into areas of consciousness that are not regulated by conscious thought. Our best ideas sometimes come to mind without our thinking consciously about them at all” (Robinson, 2011, p. 167). Mr. Jones can relate to the community of learners who are experiencing difficulty with learning, and because he is empathetic towards those students, he is willing to go above and beyond to ensure that the students are learning.
Prior to our impact project they didn't really have a lot to supply, to their children or even for themselves. The women appreciated our comfort. We also went to a local nursing home, that same day by the name of First step Therapy services. We hosted an event called buddy for a day, this was where each member of the leadership was assigned their own
In the past few years, community agencies have increasingly used groups since various groups have become a common feature of today's society. Some of the most common groups in today's society include groups for women, men, parent education, children, HIV/AIDS support, and those for reducing substance abuse. Due to the increased use of groups by communities, there are various approaches that have emerged including group counseling and group psychotherapy. Group counseling is a designed preventive and remedial approach to meet the needs of specific population in the society like women, men, the elderly, adolescents, and children. On the contrary, group psychotherapy is a re-education process of the present and past through conscious and unconscious awareness.
The One Roof Community Community Centre (ORCC) is a program associated with the Warming Room Community Ministries in Peterborough, Ontario. A meal is served twice a day during the week, and once a day on weekends (Warming Room Community Ministries, 2017). The building is also open for drop-in hours from 12-7, providing a warm place to stay during the afternoon. The Warming Room Community Ministries number one goal is to “work toward God’s dream of justice, peace and love in the City of Peterborough by meeting immediate needs, breaking down barriers that exist in the community and advocating for systemic change.” (Warming Room Community Ministries, 2017).
In Maryland, 75 hours of community service are required for students to graduate. Getting in the way of many after school activities, students should not be required to have community service hours to get a diploma.
According to AASW (2010), social workers are committed to work with individuals, groups and communities to achieve the equitable access to social, economic, environmental and political resources. As a social work undergraduate, we acknowledge the significant impact of CD through the positive change in the society. Our group through the course of this semester has learnt about the process of community work and community development. They are inter-related and beneficial to the community in which address and meet the needs of members. The progress of
